Eurofighter a shooting star in clash with US jets

    MURDO MACLEOD
    POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

IT might be over budget and years late but the Eurofighter Typhoon has shown that it can shake off America's best fighter plane and shoot it down.

A chance encounter over the Lake District between a Eurofighter trainer and two F-15 aircraft turned into a mock dogfight, with the British plane coming off best - much to the surprise of some in the RAF. The episode was hushed up for fear of causing US blushes.

For a project 10 years late and $8bn over budget, it is a welcome piece of good news.

The 'clash' took place last year over Windermere when the two-seater RAF Eurofighter was 'bounced' from behind by the two F-15E fighters.

The US pilots intended to pursue the supposedly hapless 'Limey' for several miles and lock their radars on to it for long enough so that if it had been a real dogfight the British jet would have been shot down.

But much to the Americans' surprise, the Eurofighter shook them off, outmanoeuvred them and moved into shooting positions on their tails.

The British pilots themselves were almost as surprised at winning an encounter with an aircraft widely regarded as the best fighter in the world.

Wow, it beat a 30 year-old design. Good show.

Can it beat two Me109's though?

Lets see it go against a F-22.

Was it one of the newest model F15's or or one of the 30-year-old models like the person above said?

If it was one of the newer ones I'd be impressed.

There will always be a bigger fighter. And now this'll get the ball rolling to for the DoD to come up with a newer, better plane.

Nothing can beat the ME-109 though. We should go back to the day of hurricane's and spitfires.

Yeah, not that it really matters, but the F-15 is the outgoing design of US fighters. It's being phased out of the Air Force, but will still see action as a capable fighter in 3rd world forces.

"In the late 1970?s, concern arose among military planners about the aging design (first flight in 1972) of the F-15 and the possible loss of future air superiority of the fighter."

The F-35 JSF (joint Strike Fighter) just started production:

    F35

Plans call for the F-35 to be the world's premier strike aircraft through 2040, Aldridge said. "It will provide air- to-air capability second only to the F-22 air superiority fighter," he said. The plane will allow the Air Force forces to field an almost all-stealth fighter force by 2025.

The F-22 Raptor is the top dog in the fighter world.

    F22

The F-22 is an air dominance fighter with much-improved capability over current Air Force aircraft. It is widely regarded as the most advanced fighter in the world, combining a revolutionary leap in technology and capability with reduced support requirements and maintenance costs.

It will replace the F-15 as America's front-line, air superiority fighter, with deliveries to operational units beginning in 2002.

Don't get me wrong, it's good that the Eurofighter can beat the F-15, because the F-15 is being exported to other nations, and the Eurofighter may encounter it.

But I don't know if it's worth spending 8 BILLION and 10 years to finally beat a 30 year old design.

Even crazier is the US HYPERSOAR, which hasn't entered production yet:

    HYPERSOAR

"HyperSoar could fly at approximately 6,700 mph (Mach 10), while carrying roughly twice the payload of subsonic aircraft of the same takeoff weight. As a military aircraft, a HyperSoar bomber the size of an F-22 could take off from the U.S. and deliver its payload from an altitude and at a speed that would defy all current defensive measures."

    2 F-15s = 1 F-30

    US F-22 = Pwnt

    However, 1 F-35 > Euro Typhoon.

    Europe = Pwnt

    Rule Britannia! [face_devil] :D

The US may have had the lead for a short while, but we always fight back - and win with bells and whistles - Harrier anyone? :p

At least now we know what the 'F' really stands for...... :p :D

The Eurofighter's ability to beat those F15's, E-models no less, is more the result of a couple a hot-shot pilots than plane maneuverability. The 15E's are supposed to be able to take out a Eurofighter...I'd say the US pilots need to be more cautious they try to shake up a ole' experienced pilot in a trainer aircraft[face_laugh]

Trell - whats a couple of decades in the grand scheme of things :p

lol - give us a break! It's not every day we manage to technically outperform the US at anything :p

Now outperform in terms of skill, thats a whole other ball game..... ;)

Whatever you say, you crazy old man. or woman. or whatever.

I wanna see the Typhoon beat a pair of F-22s, or better yet, a pair of Air Force F-35s. Of course Britain will also have F-35s. Of course it'll be more like the MC variant, which would lose so bad if ever in a strait out fight with an F-22 or an AF F-35. Of course Su-37(?)>F-22, well maneuverability wise, but the F-22 is designed to hold back and fire their missiles from a distance.

The F-15E is not a dogfighter.

The F-15E (Strike Eagle) is as fully air-to-air capable as the standard F-15C, or is at least very close.

They only won because of the exchange rate. 1 pound = 2 dollars (approximately). One British plane can defeat many Japanese or Mexican planes.
