jcgoble3 How about something involving a glowrod or glowpanel? Another option I can think about is "the hyperdrive kicked in" or something along those lines.

A flash of inspiration; a flash of inspiration struck him; a star went nova in his mind; then he got an idea, a wonderful idea; the lightning of genius struck him.

Thanks Chyntuck and Gamiel. I especially like "the hyperdrive kicked in". I'll give it a little more thought before I add it to my fic. :)

@jcgoble, something to do with light technology -- a glowrod sounds extremely weird though! Like it would be stuck through your skull like one of those fake arrow things. :p Umm, glowlamp?

Gamiel, nothing in particular but there are some canon details on the world that I think you could develop.

If Chiron is the only living world for miles around (and did the Chironians always live there -- or did they come and terraform it or something after the devastation of the general area) then that has to have affected them somehow. Less access to resources, possibly, since there may be little reason for ships from the busy Coreward areas to go there.

Edit: Wow, I think I posted simultaneously with about 4 people here. Oops.

    I like the hyperdrive thing.

The more I sit here and think about it, the more I'm thinking that simply changing it to "a light came on in his head" would be best and most easily understood by us Earthlings.

It always comes down to preference. There are times to just keep it simple and move on to something else. The hyperdrive thing is pretty cool, though.

In page 4 of my Star Wars story (started yesterday),
The Emperor has ordered Darth Vader to slay a Jedi on Utapau. (The story takes months after The Great Jedi Purge) Anyways, Vader killed the Jedi's apprentice months ago and the Jedi went into hiding. Vader and the Jedi are dueling when the Jedi drops his lightsaber. The lightsaber rolls away when a stormtrooper (in clone trooper armor) picks it up. The Jedi is disarmed and is being held upside down by Darth Vader. At this moment, I want the Jedi to be slain. I need assistance on how to perform the kill. I was thinking of the Dooku kill from Revenge of the Sith but I thought: How would I get the Jedi to kneel for the sai cha technique?

Vader could have forced him to his knees using the Force, maybe?

"Glowcrystals" were used IU when the Solo children encountered an old maintenance droid in the Undercity.

Wait, what book was this in? I may want to look up the context.

Jedi Academy Trilogy. Not sure which book. The Solo Twins were lost when they encountered it.

Help me, physics nerds, you're my only hope!

Yes, I have to be THAT person asking about the real laws of physics for a fictional universe. :p

When a ship (in this case, a very big ship, if that matters at all), is in orbit, if it wants to move away from the planet or moon that it's circling, I gather that it's not just a simple matter of firing up the engines and just heading straight out into space...right? It's probably far more complex than that, even though we're accustomed to seeing all kinds of ships just jet away from a world on a straight line. Or am I overthinking this?

Well, if the pilot wants to conserve fuel, they could slingshot around the planet/moon and gain momentum for the flight that way.

You're overthinking it. In general terms, maintaining orbit is nothing but holding the correct forward velocity for the chosen altitude so that you literally fall around the planet/moon by gravity. Decrease that velocity, and you move closer to the planet (and fall into the atmosphere if you want to or if you fail to control the ship); increase that velocity, and you move away from the planet and potentially get ejected out into space. So just rotate the ship to point away from the planet, hit the thrusters, and say goodbye to orbit.

For a real-world example, see the Apollo program. The missions that headed to the Moon started in Earth orbit, then after system checks were complete, they simply reignited the third stage of the Saturn rocket for about six minutes to eject them from orbit and put them on a trajectory toward the Moon.

Also, keep in mind a common misconception about escape velocity. Contrary to what some believe, a planet's escape velocity is not a minimum speed that must be achieved to break free of a planet's gravity no matter what. It is the minimum speed at which an object fired out of a cannon straight up from the planet's surface without any further thrust (i.e. on a ballistic trajectory) will escape the gravitational pull of the planet. Given continuous thrust, continuous altitude gain, and sufficient fuel, a ship will eventually escape the planet's gravity regardless of its speed.

In this case fuel conservation is totally irrelevant; they just want to get the heck out of dodge pronto.

Well, sweet, then - that certainly works in my favor. Even so, I figured it was better to ask than to just assume and take a literary faceplant. :p Thanks, y'all!

Hi everyone. :) So here's a dumb but probably easy question: in the GFFA, where do you take your ship in to be repaired? Obviously not "the garage," but something like that, certainly?

    What about non-alcoholic beverages?

I have attempted to locate another word for cocoon, I think it's similar to Crystalis? Is there a site that has all the space regions and such?

Is there any knowledge about how fast hyperdrive travel is? Ex. How long would it take to get from the Outer Rim to the Core?

Wookieepedia's beverage category lists quite a few juices, teas, milks, etc.

    Chrysalis?

Here is a table for hyperspace travel times. It's similar to the one given in the SW RPG Core Rules. The same site also has a nice map of the Galaxy

I think you could use a cocoon in SW, it's fine to use some Earth words. You could use chrysalis, but that's the actual act of transformation and not the protective covering, IIRC.
