I'll bet this thread was done before, but I'll take my chances. If you want to wait before TUF, that's cool. My favorite SW novels are:

    5. Star by Star, Troy Denning, The other epic of the SW books hits dead-on with some big twists and plays with the redemption theme quite often.
    4. Darksaber, Kevin J. Anderson, Anderson's expertise with fast pacing works well in this superb story that follows several storylines and has a great, if ambiguous, ending. Too bad the sequel wrecked it.
    3. The Last Command, Timothy Zahn, The conclusion to Zahn's trilogy is a superb way to tie all the stories together and there is a genuine feel of suspense and there is great irony in the story.
    2. Heir to the Empire, Timothy Zahn, The debut EU novel has some great new allies in Talon Karrde and Mara Jade, a great villain in Thrawn, and the main characters are dead-on. A great read.
    1. Vision of the Future, Timothy Zahn, Zahn is on fire in the end of his duology, with an epic story that plays from end of the spectrum to the other. Brought SW books back on course.

Splinter of the Mind's Eye was the first purely EU book, appearing more than a decade before Zahn's Heir to the Empire in Feb. 1978. The Han Solo Adventures (the original Han Solo trilogy) would be released in 1979-1980 and the Lando Calrissian Adventures (the only Lando Calrissian trilogy) all appeared in 1983 after the release of RotJ.

Some of my favorites have to be the Jedi Academy Trilogy, I Jedi, Shadows of the Empire, Thrawn Trilogy and Truce at Bakura. No NJO novels really stand out. I liked quite a few parts of Vector Prime, that would have to be my favorite out of the series to be honest.

Recently, I'm very impressed by Shatterpoint. I also enjoyed "I, Jedi" for a different perspective on events during the whole Jedi Academy deal and - what was for me, personally - an introduction to the character of Corran Horn.

In the NJO it's a tough call... I can honestly say I've enjoyed certain parts of all the various books more than any one single book as a whole. And some books had many 'good parts' for me while others would only have one or two moments. After all the interesting tidbits and exchanges in Traitor, for example, I was disappointed that there weren't more moments such as Luke and Vergere's talks in Balance Point.

The Correlian Trilogy is probably the best set of SW novels I have ever read.

    SPOILERS

The unifying force I think has the potential to be great, so with that said heres my top 5.

    1. Traitor- hands down the best star wars book i have read.

    2. Any of the timothy zahn books- to me just seems to stay true to the origanl star wars, great stories, great characters.

    3. Rebel stand/rebel dream- Great to see the Rebellion again. nyax was a cool idea but could have been executed better.

    4. Star by Star- epic book, nice to see that rat borsk did something good for someone else besides himself. Only complaint i would rather jacen died and anakin gone on.

    5. Destiny's Way- Nice to see the republic/GFFA get a big victory, My favorite character vergere to go out like she did, only complaint i thought jacen should have finished of Tsavong Lah.

honorable mention courtship of princess leia- "KISS MY WOOKIE"

    The best: Star by Star
Closely followed by Shatterpoint and Tatooine Ghost
I, Jedi, Rogue Planet, and Planet of Twilight rank pretty high too.

I , Jedi is the best SW book there is, it is on a different level of quality compared to the rest.

Otherwise, Star by Star, the x-wing series , Shadows of te Empire (wierd one) and Shadow Hunter.

    5) X-wing 9: Allston's writing is great here, nice to see the pilots on their own.
    4) X-wing 1-4: Great pilot writing and plot, but I just don't think Stackpole does it as well as Allston does.
    3) Zahn Trilogy- What restarted it all; it still holds up as really good writing, and I like the way Zahn writes Luke.
    2) X-Wing 5-7: Allston does an amazing job with pilot minds and pilot humor
    1) I Jedi. Great writing, and true literature.

Quite frankly, I really don't like most of the NJO stuff. The Allston pairing was ok, although I wish he'd skipped the Nyax part and expanded more on other stuff. I, unlike everyone else, really didn't like Traitor- it's just not star wars to me.

    DARKSABER
    THE NEW REBELLION
    SPECTER OF THE PAST

I am also generally accepting of the SW novels. There have been a few stinkers (Dark Journey, Planet of Twilight, Crystal Star). For the most part, though, the series has been fairly consistent.

these are my faves, however the order changes based on my mood:
    1. thrawn trilogy: friggin awesome, goes without saying
    2. zahn duology: just as friggin awesome as the thrawn trilogy, totally perfect ,wouldnt change a thing.
    3. courtship of princess leia: highly underrated, really cool if only cuz u get to see luke flying the falcon by himself through the force, one of the all time coolest scenes in any book
    4. from the NJO, id say traitor and conquest are the best, conquest is highly underrated

as far as the worst, crystal star was so bad, i couldnt even finish it...the force heretic series in NJO was hideously boring...and contrary to popular opinion, i thought truce at bakura sucked, borrrrring
