Aliens 3 was horrible, never should have been made.

I did like the Day After Tommorow though.

It's not horrible (especially not the extended version) -- the one after that was horrible.

Looking at the link in the initial post, I'll list the ones I think are truly deserving of more acclaim than they receive[d]:

Mouse Hunt (#14). I think Mouse Hunt is a great kid's movie, with enough entertainment for adults, too. Christopher Walken's performance as the exterminator is hilarious.

Frequency (#20). I saw this one when it came out and could not believe why it wasn't popular. The rather corny sounding plot actually worked, and balanced emotion with drama to create what was surely one of 1997's best movies.

Ed Wood (#66). Burton's best film, and an excellent performance by Depp as the remarkably talentless and sexually perverse '50s director. Martin Landau is great as Lugosi, also.

A Knight's Tale (#80). Alright, this isn't my favourite film. If I were to compose a list of films I liked, in order of good to not so good, A Knight's Tale would be somewhere in the back. But still, I consider it underrated. The addition of rock music to jousting of all things comes off as deliciously original and memorable.

...hmm, a few comments looking at that list:

"Nightwatch": Ew, no. I had an ex-girlfriend who just RAVED and raved and raved about this movie. I watched it. I wasn't impressed. I didn't even know it was considered as a movie requiring any love.

"In the Mouth of Madness": Oh yes. Definitely agree that it's one of the more underrated horror flicks, and proof-positive that John Carpenter hasn't lost it, as some have reported. Do you read Sutter Cane?

"The Arrival": Agree here, too. Twohy is a guy who's every FILM is underrated. Everytime i find this one on TBS or somet other channel, i inevitably wind up watching it.

"Time After Time": Cool concept. A bit dated, but still..A cool concept.

"Brotherhood of the Wolf": Eh, i liked it, but i actually think it's a bit overrated.

"Gattaca": I think it's gotten the love it deserves. I like it, but have never thought of it as underrated or underappreciated.

    "Equilibrium": Yes.

"Mouse Hunt": YES YES YES. And this coming from someone who, until he sat down and watched it on, i think , the Disney sunday night movie, thought it looked like an absolute waste of time. Surprisingly dark, entertaining film.

"Contact": This movie does deserve more credit. Seeing it on the big screen, it had one truly JAW dropping scene (when the first machine is blown). I have to agree with the group who's surprised to see it dissed in this thread. Amazing film, from an amazing writer.

"Alien 3": I still don't know how to feel about this. I hated it upon my first viewing, but subsequent viewings cause it to grow on you. Still don't think it's UNDERRATED, though...To many flaws.

"The Iron Giant": YES. You just try to keep a tear out of your eye. TRY!

"Young Sherlock Holmes": I watched this one on christmas day, about 2 years ago. Yes yes yes. Great kids movie that actually has quite dark tinge to it.

"The Ref": Denis Leary at his finest. Should've become a holiday classic. Maybe it will, someday.

"Atlantis: The Lost Empire": Ew, no. Mediocre Disney outing.

"Fright Night": HELL YES! I've loved this movie for YEARS. One of my favourtie horror films. Always wondered why it didn't get more appreciation. "Welcome to Frrrrrright Night..."

"Long Kiss Goodnight": Eh, i don't think so. I mean, it was an okay action movie, but it's Renny Harlin.

"Ronin": Yes. Features possibly the most excellent car chase filmed in the last 20 years, and has an absolutely amazing cast.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom": Sorry folks. I don't think this one is underrated at all. Lucas admits himself that he possibly went too far with this one, and he's right. Also is killed by the annoying Mrs. Spielberg...

"LA Story": Yes yes yes. My favourite Steve Martin movie. Very touching, hilariously quirky love story. "Hi, my name is Bob. I'll be your mugger today."

"Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey": YES! I have been trying to promote this movie for YEARS. Possibly the most underrated comedy of all-time. William Sadler's Grim Reaper is an example of a jaw-droppingly hilarious performance. "You may be a King or a lowly streetsweeper, but sooner or later YOU'LL dance with dah Reaper.."

"Universal Soldier": Ew, no. This is Roland Emmerich/Dean Devlin crap.

"In the Line of Fire": I like the movie, but it's underrated? I never thought so. John Malkovich DID deserve the Oscar over Tommy Lee Jones, though..

"Shadow of the Vampire": Quirky, yes. Worth watching, yes. Underrated? I don't know about that...

"Ed Wood": Eh, i don't know that it's underrated. Upon it's release, it received alot of reviews, and it's a bit too quirky for alot of people. I like it, though.

"25th Hour": Eh, i don't think it's underrated. It's a Spike Lee joint, and those are traditionally overrated. Good cast, though.

"Super Troopers": Sorry, this one's overrated. Funny at times, but it had it's moment of overhype.

"Point Break": I'll buy that. One of my favourite guilty-pleasure movies.

The Rock and The Hunt for Red October.

YES! Great plot, great acting and Sean Connery. The awesomeness.

"The Iron Giant": YES. You just try to keep a tear out of your eye. TRY!

If this movie doesn't move you on some level, you have no soul.

..eh, i like "The Rock" and LOVE "The Hunt for Red October", but are they really underrated?

Both grossed over 100 million domestically.

Seems like "The Hunt for Red October" was on Cable tv at every single night, for awhile there (i think Spike TV was running it), and i regularly run into people who list "The Rock" as being among their favourite films.

    What a great list.

I have not looked at the whole thing but I plan to check it out and get some ideas for movies that I need to see.

But from the discussion I have read here Gattaca is the most unloved that deserves more.

I also fall in the category of thinking that it was not gonna be any good, but then you start watching it and seeing the message it conveys about the human spirit is just amazing.

Reign of Fire. I love the concept of a post-apocalyptic-techno fantasy movie. Who says that Hollywood can't come up with any new ideas anymore.

Nice looking list, I haven't seen all of these filsm but the ones that I have seen I agree on. Although I must confess that I liked ANTZ way more than "A Bugs Life".

I also agree that Alien 3 needs way more love. I hated it when I was little but that was mainly becuase I was so in love with ALIENS and I wasn't expecting a prison drama/gothic horror pick. I remember renting it though on time when my friend came over and we had an Alien marathon(Minus A:Res ;)) and I enjoyed it alot. But I would really recommend watching the Extended Asembly cut of the film, it is definately a better version since its closer to Fincher's vision. I bought the Quadrilogy pack and the Assembly cut is the way to go. Alien3 is probably my favorite out of all of them.

Frequency was friggin awesome, I remember when I saw i int he theater, it waas really cool.

I also liked Romeo and Juilet alot, I remember that my Shakespeare techer ofcourse had a problem with it since it was modern day. But I definately prefer this over the one made in the 60's, although the Juilet in that one did have a nice rack :).

"At Close Range", with Christopher Walken and Sean Penn. Powerhouse acting from the two, they should have been nominated. Moody soundtrack featuring Madonna's "Live to Tell". Powerful film.

First film that comes to mind for me is "The Legend Of 1900". Critics all go crazy over Cinema Paradiso (also directed by Tornatore), but no one ever mentions this one. Great nostalgic atmosphere, fine performances from Tim Roth and Pruit Taylor Vance, and a wonderful Ennio Morricone soundtrack. Probably in my top 10, if I ever do one.

I'd have to second Breakdown and Galaxy Quest as examples of mainstream filmmaking gone right, and I think they deserved better then to do moderate business and then be all but forgotten. Better then being out-and-out flops, though, I guess. 25th Hour and Ghost World are other favourite of mine, though I think those were always destined for a smaller audience, and they seem well respected enough at this stage.

In fact just about everything I've seen from this thread is good to great. Aside from Underworld, naturally. Surely everyone loves Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, though?

[]Depp as the remarkably talentless and sexually perverse '50s director[/i]

Sexually perverse? Come on now, he just liked angora - nowt wrong wi' that!

Good idea for a thread! :)

Gattaca is certainly a film that deserves more love. I don't think it has a high "replay-value", but I've seen it a couple of times now, and I still like it.

I own Nightwatch, which I think is just a good movie. The first time I saw it, I thought it had some good tensioned moments, and even now the surprise is gone, I still like.

Conact also deserves some ore love, because it's a very good movie, that puts religion and SF against each other, which was really interesting. Jodie Foster's performace was very good as well.

The movie I think deserves more love is Sky Captain. I loved how it was so much like moders version of the old SF movies, including "cliches's" such as the mad scientist, and robts attackin a city. The design of the movie was fantastic! A great combination between old fashioned and high tech stuff.
Another is Moulin Rouge, which over here is mostly described as "gay". I think Ewan is very charming as unexperience writer in love, and the whole movie is just visually stunning. I loved the musical references, and the new versions of classic songs.

    Wow! People agree! :)

Another one is Hulk. Maybe it's the superhero fatigue, or just because it's not your average superhero summer blockbuster, that the movie didn't do too well, but I think the latter is certainly the movie's strength.

Just like in Batman Begins, Hulk does a lot to explain the character of Bruce Banner. I really liked that. And though in a totally different way, just like Sin City, Hulk is a moving comicbook; the scene transitions are just fantastic. I thought it was very brave of the makers to embrace Hulk's comicbook roots, instead of taking distance from it, like the makers of X Men and Spiderman did.
The CG Hulk was good too. He had some great acting moment, and again, I thought it was very brave that they showed him in broad daylight.

Ed Wood is a must see, easily my favorite Burton film. It`s a great look at the movie making process, and it never insults Wood,he`s a guy who dreamed more than he could handle.

I liked Alien 3,it`s darker than the first two but it`s good nonetheless.

Batman Forever should get some more respect too.

There's being underrated, and then there's being overlooked completely:

    About a Boy-
WTH!? Hugh Grant is funny? You bet. And don't buy that this gem belongs in the romantic comedy section, because it doesn't. If you have a special place in your heart for British sarcasm, single mums, and dealing with lonerhood, this one's for you.

    Swimming with Sharks-
Think "Office Space" but instead of Initech think corporate Hollywood. Funny, dark, a little unrealistic at times, but definitely something different. Also, don't forget Kevin Spacey. ;)

    The Game-
A impressive and riveting thriller that has one of the more memorable "wooaaah" endings I've seen. My favorite Michael Douglas character. I always remember this movie when I see him in other movies.

    Bandits-
Best heist movie ever, IMHO. Really feels like a rush of adrenaline when they do the first job... eeee!

    Waking Life-
Apart from being really, really expository, it's probably one of the most eye-opening philosophical movies you'll ever see. Make sure you brush up on your existentialism before diving into this one, if you want it to mean anything... or should I say... give meaning to it???

    And for the underrated list:

Bottle Rocket- Pure gold. The people that don't like this movie will never understand my sense of humor.

Magnolia- Pretty much a masterpiece, even if it is based off of "Short Cuts."

Good Will Hunting- It's so easy to overlook this film until you actually watch it. A great cast, and a great script.

Fiddelr on the Roof- The only musical I could ever stand. Why hasn't anyone else ever seen this movie?
