I've said it before...I'll say it again....they should just use the Assault Frigate MkII for the Starhawk.

Eh, it's not really axe-shaped, and in my opinion not that attractive a design. We're talking about the one from Empire at War and Star Wars Armada right? It's ok as a rebel ship to pad out fleets, but I wouldn't mind if it remained non-canon. I'd really like ILM to step up their game like they did with Rogue One with a design that's original but has the same McQuarrie-esque hero-ship visual cues, working it into a big fleet battle of the remaining two movies of the sequel trilogy the same way we were surprised with the Executor in ESB and the Mon Cals in ROTJ.

    Yes...this one...

I would be fine either way...but that has been a longtime complaint of mine. They introduce ships in the books and NEVER give us any art for them. Throw us a bone ever few years. Do a concept art book for ships, weapons, and scenes from the novels.

Zahn had access to all the WEG source books and used them as reference which was great.

When I picture the Starhawk though, I'm picturing the Assault Frigate Mark I's upscaled.

Maybe it is all about hindsight being 20/20 since the Mk I came out in the Rebel Alliance source book and slave rigging was a Zahn concept.....but why wouldn't the alliance just slave rig whatever Dreadnoughts they got ahold of and then just put a complicated password and firewall on the slave rig set up to prevent slicing??

I think the Assault Frigates as drawn in the Thrawn Trilogy graphic novel are neat, but I don't like those Ass-Frig-Its that are half Dreadnaught with Nebulon Buckteeth. That's just my opinion though.

I like the old Assault Frigate but honestly I do want a new design. I liked this fan art of a Starhawk

While I'd like to see the Assault Frigate made canon, I don't see why they would make up a new name like Starhawk if they were just going to use an old design with the serial numbers filed off. It would be like if, say, the E-wing was recanonized but for some reason they insisted on calling it the W-Wing. I can't help but be reminded of that time before Thrawn appeared in Rebels, when people where so desperate for him to be made canon they theorized that the promo images of Orson Krennic were actually a human Thrawn, based solely on the fact that he wore white.

Ion cannons are green now? That might explain why the TIE Fighters in ZERO HOUR seemed to hit the Rebel capital ships way above their weight class in the battle......

Maybe Profundity just has Imperial-brand turbolasers on it?

It certainly has Imperial-brand engines - the Rogue One Ultimate Visual Guide noted this.

Time for more geeking out over pointless minutia concerning one of my favorite ships:
    [IMG][IMG]
Unless theres an X-wing behind that Nebulon B, there's another turbolaser turret to the portside of the deflector tower. Might be reused geometry from the side guns or the turrets on the CR90/Hammerhead/Dornean.

Nice catch. That is certainly a cannon. Is it in any other shots? Might be just one of them cause modding.

I only gathered those shots from the starwarsscreencaps website, and I didn't see any other clear shots of the top of the ship's stern. I'll try inspecting my copy, but my computer doesn't have a bluray drive so I can't be certain on image quality from the dvd.

I saw this version of the dauntless on moddb the other day and thought it'd work great to be retconned as a type of Mon Calamari cruiser

God, that Dauntless mod really does look like a ship you'd see alongside the Profundity in the early Rebel Fleet.

One retcon I always proposed back in the old EU was that the hull was originally a SoroSuub liner, but it was retrofitted into a capital ship at the Mon Calamari Shipyards. That would keep it a Sullustan design, but explain why it had similarities/features akin to a Mon Cal cruiser.

That is sweet...but I would keep it Sorosuub...just for variety as opposed to all teh KDY dagger ships of the Empire.

By the way on page 790 Admiral Nick made an image post of Rogue One fleet screencaps, you can see that the Nebulon B has some type of bulge where I surmised that apparent turret to be, but it's not really clear whether its actually a weapon battery or just some greeble.

There is one thing I take issue with on this...the hanger is right at the front of the ship with no protection aside from shields.

No. Keep your grubby flippers off of one of the few non Mon-Cal capital ships in the Rebel Fleet! Making everything related to Mon Calamari just shrinks the galaxy, not expand it.

I just think it looks similar to a Mon Cal ship the same way the Profundity did. At first I thought the Profundity was a Mandalorian Cruiser based on the shape and design aesthetic of the mast and collar in the trailers being all but identical to the Coronet from TCW. But then I learned that it was a Mon Calamari cruiser and did a double take thinking that made no sense. Then I saw it in the movie and it was perfection.

I don't disagree at all, I'm just saying that I wish the designers of Rebellion made it less Mon Cala looking, to avoid any connections. However, having the Mon Cala retrofit it doesn't take anything away from Soro Suub, as the hull is clearly theirs. Adding weapons blisters and shield generators doesn't take away from that!

Obsessive compulsion pays off! Definitely not an X-wing in cruising mode, definitely not part of the deflector tower, definitely not attached to the deck. I doubt there is anybody who gives as much of a damn about this stupid crap as I do, but I suppose there aren't many people out there obsessed with this ship.

Fleet junkies of the world, here are a few elements from The Visual Encyclopedia that fall right in line with your interests. Not sure if the spoiler tags are necessary, but here we go:
The Encyclopedia has three spreads pertaining to ships: (1) warships, (2) civilian ships, (3) and starfighters.

Types of warships described are capital ships (sub-types: star destroyers and battleships), troop transportation ships, attack ships, and patrol ships.
    • Examples of Star Destroyers: Resurgent-class, Imperial I-class, Venator-class
    • Examples of battleships: TF battleship, Mon Calamari Star Cruiser, Munificent-class star frigate, Acclamator-class assault ship, Recusant-class destroyer, Subjugator-class cruiser, Providence-class destroyer, Nebulon-B frigate
    • Examples of troop transportation ships: LAAT/c and LAAT/i, Atmospheric Assault Lander, C-9979 landing craft, Nu-class attack shuttle, Resistance transport
    • Examples of attack ships: SS-54 assault ship, Flarestar-class attack shuttle, Trident drill assault craft, Droch-class boarding ship
    • Examples of patrol ships: Auzituck-class gunship, Republic stealth ship, Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft
Types of civilian ships described are freighters (subtypes: cargo freighters, smugglers' ships, and passenger transports), diplomatic ships, and small spacecrafts (subtypes: personal cruisers, escape aides, shuttles).
    • Examples of Cargo freighters: G9 rigger, Trandoshan prisoner ship, Gozanti-class cruiser, Imperial cargo ship, Lucrehulk-class ship, GS-100 salvage ship
    • Examples of smugglers' ships: modified YT-1300 transport (Millennium Falcon), modified VCX-100 (Ghost), Eravana bulk freighter, modified C-ROC Gozanti (Borken Horn)
    • Examples of passenger transports: GR-75 transport, AA-9 freighter, Star Commuter 2000
    • Examples of diplomatic ships: CR90 corvette, custom luxury spaceliner (Coronet), Republic cruiser
    • Examples of personal cruisers: J-type 327 Nubian, H-type Nubian yacht, J-type Naboo star skiff, Count Dooku's solar sailer, Rainhawk-class transport
    • Examples of escape aides: escape pods, ejector seat
    • Excamples of shuttles: Sheathipede shuttle, Lambda-class shuttle, Delta-class shuttle, Upsilon-class shuttle, CSS-1 star shuttle (Senator Palpatine's shuttle)
Starfighters are classified by eras rather than types.
