I was born in Hong Knong as well, and I think that's true. For some reason, Asians accents are just too...Asiany, for lack of a beeter word, to some people.

See the thing is, since I was raised here, I now have an Californinan accent to my Cantonese (If I can figure out what makes it different frrom the rest of the US). My relatives always tease me for that. It sounds normal to some of my friends, but it's like screeching to their ears. For some reason, chinese find all accents screechy.

You can't do it straight away, or easily. People only pick up accents over time because they are constantly hearing the slight differences in tone, inflection and vocalisation, and they start to mimick by habit. But unless you are in an atmosphere where you are totally bombarded with it, you have little to no chance.

I can have perfect pronounciation and perfect word stressing - if I had an example of what it sounds like. But when I make sentences myself, I seem to stress the wrong syllables. On the other hand, if I try to copy an Obi-Wan Kenobi accent lightly, it turns out like American/Canadian english for the most part (except it sounds pretty forced sometimes). It's absolutely screwed up.

I don't have any problem with people speaking Chinese with an accent. In fact, it's kind of cute for someone to speak Cantonese with the accent of many foreign-born-but-trying-to-speak-Cantonese individuals.
