    Hi everyone!

I'm not a big gamer. Very much because my lack of a computer :p

But I'll soon have one again.
I am very intersted in these games but sometimes when there are two similar games there is like a "truth" to everyone wether one is better or not.
Well, wich one is the best?

You guys get to decide wich one I should put my effort into :)

Galactic Battlegrounds is fun, and runs off the Age of Empire II engine. If you liked AoE, this game is nearly the same...so similiar its almost like a mod. However, its still a fun game.

Force Commander is a more origonal idea of Lucasarts. However, the camera ruins the game. Its not like many other RTS's, you need to get "command points" to get more units rather than resources...it is fully 3D, but the graphics aren't too great. Most people dislike this game, but I found it fun for a few months....

I have GB and I hardly play it....sadly. It just didn't do much for me. I'm one of those semi RTS fans that like the fast paced ones. Starcraft is still my fav. RTS game. GB has a whole lot of features, but it is a little slow for me.

My bf tells me GBG is the only SW strategy game worth playing. Is it a lot better than Rebellion?

And yeah, I have heard Force Commander is really no good.

Also, what are the specs for GBG? I have a 2000 computer, that, according to my bf, has a laughable graphics card. However, he's has some sort of $2000 monster, so that really isn't a comparison. Would GBG run ok on a 2000 Compaq?

To be or not to be. That is the question.

Remember, GBG runs off the AoK engine. It only needs like 200 meghertz to run, and has fairly old graphics. It was fun, but I moved on to Empire Earth fairly quickly, as it was a much more fun RTS...

You can pick Force Commander up for $10 these days, and it's worth it.

Multiplayer is poor (unless you're on a LAN), but the SP campaigns are fun.

The camera is fine, it's great to float down to the ground for a trooper's eye-view, then put it into a traditional overhead view for strategic movements. When it came out it good slammed because it needed high end machines to run smoothly. On current PCs it should run like a dream.

My favourite feature is the "command points" where you accumulat points by having an efficient force and by occupying enemy buildings etc.

If there's one thing that frustrates me with strategy games it's chopping trees and killing animals to create armies & vehicles. Force Commander does away with that, and I love the solution hey came up with.

Oh...so now I really now wich one to pick ;)

They both sounds interesting, but if GB is more like the rest of the games in the genre, pherhaps FC would be fun to try out.
But I don't see any reason not to try them both :p

Wolverine, just go and download the demos of each one and try them for yourself.

i Got Force Commander for 7 bucks, and it was a waist.

the game is just flat bad, even for a star wars freak like me. i enjoy Rebellion more then that game.

A Trident Blade 3D is a laughable graphics card! I've read reviews for this card, and the general concensus seems to be that nVIDIA or ATI are far superior, and that even a used Voodoo card is better. Well, I happen to be throwing away the best card Voodoo ever made (Voodoo 5 5500) (BTW, if you feel your comp can run it, let me know, and I'll give it to you. This invitation extends to Connemara only)

And don't bring my ATI Radeon 128MB 9700 Pro into this! :p

    //comforts card

Anyway, to answer the question, GBG is a decent strategy game. It has its downfalls (the pacing is too slow for me) but is the best SW strategy game out there. FoCom isn't worth the dog crap stuck to my shoe, and neither is Rebellion, the only other SW strategy game I can think of. If you like Age of Empires 2, you'll like GBG. They're almost identical, except instead of having Man-at-Arms and Mangonels, you have Stormtroopes and AT-STs.

OT: Am I the only one who finds the learning campaign to be more fun than the rest of the game?

    //looks at JP

Do YOU have any idea whether my comp could handle a used Voodoo?

    Anybody?

And heck, I guess I'll try both games. I liked Rebellion after all, and *everybody* says that's a crappy game. I am just a SW game fanatic :p

    > Do YOU have any idea whether my comp could handle a used Voodoo?

Considering I have absolutely no idea what sort of computer you have, no.

Is the voodoo PCI or AGP?

If it's AGP, does your PC have an AGP slot. If not you're out of luck.

If the card is AGP and you have an AGP slot, you'll probably be fine.

And if the card is PCI and your PC has a PCI Graphics card right now, you'll probably be fine.

But if your PC has integrated graphics, then it can be a hassle to give it a card based 3D accelerator and disable the integrated chip (though it can be done).

The problem with RTS's is if you've played one, you've played them all. The same is true with GBG. If you've played Starcraft, Warcraft 2 or AoE the question that keeps playing in your head is "haven't I already beat this?"

It's fun but the fact that it came so late hurt it's replay value.

My advice is hidden option number 3: to hold off till KotOR comes out and pick up the other two in the bargain bins.

What are you, some sort of animal rights environmentalist? I certainly have no problem with it.

Wolverine: I say go with Galactic Battlegrounds. Force Commander isn't worth it at ALL. Even though I'm no RTS player, I found GBG amusing and fun. :)

Think of the Nerfs, man. For God sakes, won't someone think of the Nerfs! :_|

Anyway, jp-30, the card is AGP. The problem is, her dad feels uneasy about her removing the case. Is there any way to find out if she has an open AGP port without physically checking for one?

Can probably look through the device manager to see if there's an AGP port.

Then see if the monitor cable attaches from the PC case up near the mouse & keyboard sockets (indicates integrated graphics) or does the cable connect into a card (indicates the presence of a PCI or AGP slot).

Well, she's using a Trident Blade 3D card now [laugh.wav], so she has a slot. The card is old, so it'll be PCI. She probably also has onboard graphics. We're trying to determine whether or not she also has an AGP port.

Just do it when he's not home or something. It's not like it takes that long to take apart.

PCI slots are a light tan and AGP slot is a brown color. Hope for an AGP ;)

Hmm...um, dumb question time- How do i get to my device manager? I'm serious, I don't know where it is! :(

I have in my control panel something called System, but I think that's different.

Anyway, Wolverine, I am really sorry, I just realized I hijacked your thread :(

If there's soemwhere else I can move this discussion, JP? So it won't keep derailing Wolverine's topic.

Also...I may ask Dad if I can open up the comp, but I told Chris I will prolly just
wait till his friend, a computer tech, comes. I also want the guy to install more RAM for me. I am afraid to do all that myself, cause my comp is my lifeline (to certain people ;) ), so I woudl hafta kill myself if I broke it.

At any rate, thanks people, for your help :)
