We already have ASoIAF-verse precedent for "destroying a noble family, including all the women in it, down to the last baby" - Maegor the Cruel's purge of House Harroway. And according to the Greens "Daemon would be a second Maegor, or worse".

It may have been the most notable such purge since the Conquest, but it wasn't the last.

Aerys II did exactly the same thing to House Darklyn.

And, during the Dance of the Dragons:

Aemond does exactly this to House Strong, leaving only one servant alive. And Larys who is not at Harrenhal to be killed.

    Two points:

    1. Is that a quote from the show or the book? If the former, they certainly haven't given it any emphasis. I'll say that while we do see this sometimes (eg Lannisters at Castamere) that is again exceptionally cruel, not the regular order of handling disputes.

    2. Particular to this case, no one has expressed any concerns that Otto's brothers and sisters or their families (etc) would be at risk. This, even though the show has actually introduced some of them and shown them offering substantive support to Alicent. It would be a bit odd if the show was completely silent on what they wanted us to take as the primary risk.

The simpler path is just to assume that her life was never really at risk.

That quote's from the book version of one of Otto's letters to his brother shortly after Aemma's death. During the post-Viserys's-death council, a point is made in the books of how the Greens see Daemon as being "as cruel and unforgiving as ever Maegor was".

The show demonstrates that Daemon does not balk at murdering noblewomen he sees as obstacles.

I suspect that one of the ways the show is trying to compensate for making Alicent more of a tragic victim of the patriarchy instead of a cold blooded co-conspirator like in the book is by not only having her and Otto work against each other a bit, but by emphasizing that while Otto controls the most dangerous political levers of power, Alicent is the only one who can order around both a brute like Cole or her far more dangerous and formidable son, Aemond - and seems herself to be more bold and brave if push comes to shove than her father.

It's a bit clumsy, like I said earlier - for one thing, Cole has also been transformed from a political operator who just happens to be a personally skilled soldier to a thuggish hitman who lacks the capacity to scheme himself.

But I think they're emphasizing that Otto's faction of Greens is more skilled at politics and murder, while what actual martial skill and boldness that the faction needs for war is in Alicent's corner. We've seen Otto repeatedly show some panic or lack of forethought when actual direct conflict is involved, while Alicent's got the only battle-hardened knight in the Greens as her personal errand boy, and Aemond, he of the big brass ones, is a Momma's Boy.

The Nymeria prequel and Corlys prequel might not be happening. Both have been removed from startlinginc. Dunk and Egg remains in production still. Maybe they're put on the backburner right now. I'm guessing D&E is more important to them

Alicent said no offence was taken so doesn't that make Cole's murdering even more pointless that he wasn't punished

That was a good end to the season and bodes well for the future of the series.

The table map was super cool.

Too bad it’s over. It felt the show just got started near the end of this episode.

The dragon fight was great. The kid seemed like he got it together. I was on the edge of my seat. Use maneuverability and smaller size to your advantage. Try and outrun and out maneuver the bigger dragon to escape. Use the bad weather to hide your escape. And the kid was doing it. Then I was like - no, no, no, no, no! Do not got for clear skies yet - you’ll loose all your advantages in clear skies.

And then that big fat dragon just chomped them.

I do not like that big dragon. I really wish Smoug was around to toss him around. This will give me something to cheer against in season 2.

And with the chomp the war is on. I do wonder how the Baratheon’s will side. Do they take the marriage deal or does the bad sportsmanship in their court push them to the Queen.

Also can the Baratheon king not read?

We’ll have to wait till next year to see Winterfell.

This show was good in season 1. Very tense. A series full of villains. I liked watching the history play out.

Lookinng forward to season 2. Fingers crossed it’s ready by this time next year.

What a season finale. This was the right amount of tension build up.
I did not need 60 minutes full of action. Those last 10 minutes made up more than enough.
I was in shock with that ending. I legitimately felt sad. The 2nd season will be something.

The first blow has been struck, and now the realm will burn. That was a great ending.

Also, can we please have no more childbirth scenes in this show? They’ve all been very difficult to watch.

What a fantastic end to the season.

That was some dance. The ending was like housing a Twinkie in one bite.

IT was a good ending to good giret season, loved it. Cant wait for season 2 and see Starks and Winterfell again. Hope not two years, maybe season 2 gets summer release in 2024. Rhaenyra and Daemon were great, toxic relationship im seeing here with chocking. Love seeing Daemon sing to second largest Dragon after Vhagaer. And the Dragon fight was good. We are reminded of Viserys words.

I think that was the point. This was the most difficult to watch out of all of them.
Even there, they outdid themselves in a way :p
I feel there's value to showing things the way they are.
It really made me feel to my bones how awesome and how strong Rhaenyra is.

Also you could see that Syrax felt Rhaenyra's pain.

They definitely showed the mental link between rider and dragon in this episode… and how the dragon is almost the unrestrained id of its rider.

They also seem to be doing some foreshadowing with Rhaenyra saying with a smile she hopes dutiful Jace and wild Cregan Stark will “bond together as men.” And the book says
they hunted together, feasted together and swore a blood oath… seems pretty intense for just a quick political friendship… and the lengths Cregan will later go to… and talk of a secretive Jace romance with Cregan’s half-sister but even in the book that doesn’t totally add up … honestly I think they’ll make them a gay couple.

But the fans of House Stark will revolt with that, instead have the time of their life with brutish Gregan. BTW i'm anxious to see who they cast to play the part. Henry Cavill ( remember rumors a month ago) makes sense. As Liz Olsen could see be Jeynne Arryn ?

Cregan Stark is Jace Targaryen's age. So must be young actor who looks like in his 20's. Let them be brothers in arms and see love affair with his half sister.

Showrunner Ryan Condal confirms that #HouseOfTheDragon    Season 2 will begin filming in early 2023.

Showrunner Ryan Condal on Aemond’s actions that differ from the books in the finale of #HouseOfTheDragon[IMG] : “Historians have told us that Aemond intended to kill Luke, but I don’t think any of them could purport to know what was going on in Aemond’s head the time.“ “And I would also dispute the word ‘accident’ a bit. I mean, Aemond got on his giant dragon and chased his nephew on his much smaller dragon through the clouds screaming and yelling at him, incensing his dragon and starting a fight.”
