I think in Legends it was "The Republic was taxing the Trade Federation's trade routes, in the hope of bringing it under control and making it behave better" (The Essential Guide to Warfare).

And I think it's true in both Legends and Newcanon. Both 'verses have the Trade Federation's leadership be massacred at Eriadu, and in both it's by The Nebula Front.

    Prelude
Wilhuff Tarkin's stonewalling of the attempts to investigate the Eriadu Conference,[9] during which the Nebula Front had killed the previous leadership of the Trade Federation, which allowed the anti-Galactic Republic Nute Gunray to rise to be the Viceroy of the Trade Federation,[12] helped to foment and hasten the Naboo invasion.

Under Prop 31-814D, the Senate made the Free Trade Zones eligible for taxation,[13] which angered the Federation.[12] Around 33 BBY,[14]the Federation began to threaten blockades over the new taxes it would need to pay.

Just as they had secretly replaced Veruna by engineering Amidala's election, they placed their puppet, Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray, as the overall leader of the conglomerate by having the Trade Federation Directorate killed during the Eriadu Trade Summit.[11]

    The taxation of trade routes

By 33 BBY, the Federation's opponents in the Galactic Senate were pressing Valorum to slow the trade organization. The Supreme Chancellor responded by calling for the disbandment of the Free Trade Zones, albeit granting additional defensive allowances.[8] Following the Eriadu incident, the Republic soon passed legislation calling for the taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems.[1]The reason for this was two-fold; it would serve to weaken the growing Federation, and would recoup funds for the ailing Republic.

Hey, how come there's not a thread for the new Hyperspace Stories Codebreaker run?

The only one's I can't figure out are Journal series: Captive to Evil, Hero for Hire, The Fight for Justice.

Anyone know if these have interior illustrations?

Been a while since I read Cloak of Deception, but I think it was something to do with the Republic allowing the Trade Federation to buy a whole lot more weapons and in exchange they'd have to pay more taxes on the trade routes...Nute Gunray was unhappy about this, so Sidious tells him "that uppity Senator Palpatine proposed the tax, go show him who's boss and blockade his home planet".

Thanks! That's what I was trying to think of, I vaguely remember that (in Legends) it was slightly more complicated than taxing them "just because," especially since so many senators are already in their pockets. It was an exchange to letting them arm themselves more, basically creating the droid security forces that would soon be used as a droid army. What a bone-headed move by Senate... arm and anger a powerful organization in the galaxy.

Oh yeah, Nute Gunray didn't really want to blockade Naboo...it was a combination of his fear of Sidious (who had just had his predecessors killed) and promises of profits for doing his bidding. On his own, he never would have had the guts to challenge the Republic and the Jedi.

Incidentally, Gunray's fear of Republic reprisal also seems to imply that the Republic was not actually controlled by the megacorps to the degree Palpatine led Padme to believe - after all, Gunray is the most powerful person in the most powerful megacorp, yet even he's not willing to cross the Republic without Sidious there to "make it legal."

Jumping to Thrawn, are there books besides the main 13 that feature Thrawn as a significant part of the narrative?

The thirteen being the three trilogies, Hand of Thrawn, and Outbound Flight/Survivor's Quest.

I know he appears briefly in Soldier of the Empire, but it's hardly a important appearance.

Choices Of One might count, though he’s not as prominent there as he is in his own trilogies.

I will forever be sad that Rebels S3 and 4 never got junior novels (and that for some reason a bunch of season 2's are only in French...) I want to have all of Thrawn's story in printed format.

I am having a hard time finding a comprehensive and clear list of all of the legends young adult novels, not the children’s books like I am a Jedi and things like that I mean the series like Jedi apprentice Jedi quest last of the Jedi Junior Jedi Knights, galaxy of fear, etc. Does there exist a complete list of all of these junior Star Wars novels from legends

I mean you're halfway there. There's basically just only those you listed, Young Jedi Knights, and Rebel Force. Jedi Prince too if we're being generous.

Part of the problem is none of them are young adult novels, and I don't believe they were ever billed as such. When they came out they were either kids books or junior novels, nowadays they'd mostly be classified as middle grade novels.

Did the Millennium Falcon have a legitimate front for its smuggling operation?
