ok, I apologize if this has been brought up before but I gotta ask...what is up with Lucas pronouncing names different in the extras on the Ep2 dvd??? He calls Naboo "Nayboo" and calls "Hoth" Hoe-th with a long O sound, and I think I caught him pronouncing Dooku like 3 different ways...I can't imagine why...I mean he is far too anal to let the characters always say the names wrong...and he really shouldn't be getting them wrong either...so is he just doing it to be pretentious or what???

I have no idea why he pronounces those names wrong. I would say that he pronounces them right because he wrote the stories, but then everyone else pronounces stuff different than him. Who are we to believe, I just don't know. Is it Hawth or Howth, I don't know because stinking GL has confused me.

Well he wrote it so it really is his choice if it comes down to it.

I know what you're saying Benji, but then why would he allow all the characters in his films to CONSISTENTLY pronounce them wrong?

You aren't serious about the spelling are you? I wrote it like it sounds when you say it. I know it's spelled Hoth, but I wrote it how it sounds because if I wrote Hoth and Hoth you wouldn't be able to get what I was saying.

Yeah I know its Hoth, I was using your method of referring to the pronunciation as "hawth" like it is in the original movies and that Lucas is saying "howth" now cuz he's old and senile, I was saying the "sp?" about "senile"...

It is Howth, named after the area where they filmed the Hoth sequences.

Also, Is it To-ma-to or To-may-To?
    Sche-dule , S'Ke-Dule?
    Roof , or Ruff?

Get over it people. GL's cast is a mixture of American's Brits, Aussies and New Zealanders. They pronounce things differently, and some of it may be just a key actor pronouncing something one way, and GL deciding to use it as a standard and have everyone else pronouce the same word the same way in the dubbing sessions to save cost.

If people just "get over it" then what would we talk about on these forums? If you don't like it then don't post here.

Why don't you get over yourself, come down from there mr. high and mighty. Stop acting all above everything, if you don't want to talk about GL mispronouncing stuff, then don't. Don't tell us to get over it.

Join me, and together we will rule the Galaxy as strangers in a fantastically funny sitcom on NBC every thursday at 8:00

    Sith Dudes: Year 1

PS, I WANT to talk about GL'S pronounciation. But I find people who fault him for pronouncing things differently to be totally without a life and need to get over IT! as in their Lucas worship, Lucas hatred, both. It's a f'ing movie.

When I was 9, I thought Darth Vader was called Dark Vader. Made sense to me. He's all black and very dark on screen. I didn't care. Seems like people devolve as they get older and either want to discuss every detail of something they like (list 10 reasons why Clones kick Banta ass... etc), or take pleasure in trashing something other people like. Both those people have no life.

Really, I expect people to chat about Star Wars, but getting a hissy fit over Lucas mispronouncing something is ridiculous. No wonder Ebert and just about every director out there treat the on-line fanbase of any film with a ten foot pole. Expect those LOTR fans. They need radiation suits.

Geez is nothing sacred anymore, people are complaining about Lucas' pronounciation now?

Lucas says the names the way he wants to, his pronounciation is neither wrong nor right, its just his way of saying the characters & planets names.

Maybe pronuciation is a matter of preference, as different people from different places will have different accents, and some people from the same place may choose to pronounce things differently.

But changing the name of a thing entirely is just odd. Lasersword/Lightsaber anyone?

Exactly, YodasMaster. Even Anakin calls it a "lasersword" in EP1. I'm pretty sure I read that a lightsaber blade is not a laser at all. I guess GL is so enraptured by the effects & stuff that he doesn't have a lot of time for the 'little things'. I still love all the movies...

why can't they both be right?

In different parts of the world people pronounce things differently or call the same thing different names.

    It's a large galaxy.

Who says he is wrong? He created them he can pronounce them the way he wants. People pronounce things different. I do not see him correcting anyone. So who cares!?!?!

It's being called a "lasersword" since very early scripts back in the 70s. Yo do know that in many languages, things are called by different names right?

I dunno, when you are the person that makes the names up, its hard to take them seriously.

"...or take pleasure in trashing something other people like. Both those people have no life." -Dexters

Does anyone else notice the hilarious irony of Dexters saying this?

Anyway, the mispronunciation has nothing to do with the cast being from Britian, US, Australia, New Zealand or wherever. They all pronounce things in the saga the SAME! Only George has a different pronunciation for everything that is all HIS OWN.

I remember Harrison Ford once saying,"He can come up with all these places, he just cant say them." He says Hoe-th, Nay-boo, Palpa-tie-n, Doh-Koo, etc. Sometimes in the old trilogy, they talk about Lee-a, and Lay-a. Hon(like in gone), and Han(like in can.) ONE CHARACTER MAY EVEN PRONOUNCE THE SAME NAME MULTIPLE WAYS THROUGH OUT THE MOVIES. The fact is, he doesnt know.

In one of the ep2 docs, you see the actress who played Zam doing her voice over lines. GL and Ben Burtt and Rick McC are all there. She actually asks GL how "Naboo" is pronounced. He stumbles as if he never thought about it before. "Na...Naybo...NabOh..." Its very funny! Finally Ben Burtt has to help the poor guy out by interjecting with the correct pronunciation, "Naboo."

You cant say "GL is right in his pronunciation because he wrote them." The MOVIES all say them differently from him. Thats the REAL way they are pronounced. We have to accept SOMETHING as fact, otherwise no one can be convinced to a different way of thinking, and every post you make in these boards is useless.

Since you are a part of these boards, it is assumed that you accept the movies as the final authority. When trying to get across a point, you present your argument with proofs from the movies. Thats how a "discussion" board works.

Therefore, I move that we all accept the movies' pronunciations as fact, and GL's pronunciation as poodoo. All in favor say "Aye."
