If I were to vote through pity I'd vote for either Edward V or Jane I, but I'll vote for the leader that I feel did the most for the country on a non-corrupt level, Oliver Cromwell.

^^^ Before I click on that link, I would like to predict it's picture of a ruler, and not a King or Queen.

    EDIT: Yes, it was.

I would argue that Alfred the Great and Harold II were also great leaders and not corrupt. I'd put both rulers above Cromwell ;)

Not sure who I'll vote for yet....

I'm also thinking Henry I and Henry V too.

    Hmmmmmm....decisions decisions

    What, no King Arthur?

"How come you know so much about swallows?"

"Well, you have to know these things when your king".

Should be on the list I think!

    Elizabeth

She has the Golden Age behind her - transforming England from a small insignificant island into a world power.

Ah *puts on history / archaeology anorak*

Henry I and II for the foundations that our legal system is built on.

Edward I / III for recognising a king cannot rule without the consent of the commons.

I admire Henry V but the french wars did nothing for the country, albiet he was the first king to speak English as a first language instead of French.

Edward IV overhauled the coinage and admin. Even if he was never entitled to the crown.

Richard III was a bloody good administrator, was just and fair and should have been left alone.

Henry VII - left the country in the black.

Elizabeth I was an outstanding women, strong, independent and always put the country first.

I'll stop now because I'm boring my self.

Well I ain't an expert on History so I'm gonna go with our present Queen Elizabeth II - I think she holds herself with dignity when all around her the family runs riot!

If the documentary about "The Princes in the Tower" is correct, then all the royals since Richard III have been bogus! They're the offspring from an affair with Richard III's mother and a bowman, hence Richard III's brother was llegitimate and not entitled to the throne. And yes, that even means Elizabeth II!

Whether that rumour is true or not (and I tend to believe it is) makes no difference. The Queen is the Queen is the Queen.

We've had an unbroken line for many years which has served this country well (on the whole).

Having said that our present Sovereign can still trace her roots back to Egbert, king of Wessex and first "King of the English".

I still can't make up my mind and will cast my vote later today.

Don't forget the Winsors came from Germany originally and were called Mountbaten.

Actually the Windsors were called the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and changed their name at the outset of WWI due to anti-German sentiment in the UK.

Mountbatten is the family name of Prince Phillip.

The queen can link back to pre-conquest dynasty's on one link, Matilda who married Henry I was an Aetheling, the Family name of the house of Wessex.
I lurve history. I love all the what ifs. I do war of the roses re-enactment and have known for a while that Edward IV had no claim to the thrown, because he was illegitimate, but he was a damn site better than the Duke of Clarance, Yorks next son (he was legitimate) he would have been another John.

Saxe-Coburg-Gotha? Blimey, just imagine having a name like that when you were at school (or any time!)!? It's scary just contemplating it! It'd be hell when it comes to wearing name badges as well! :p

I'll close this thread on Wednesday.

My vote goes to Alfred the Great.

Henry I and Henry V were a close second and third.
