PT Hayden Christensen didn't leave the movie industry because of the prequels

Nope. I find monotone voices interesting. And there is something "other worldly" or "never never land" about it, which in my opinion is what SW should be.

Not just dialogue, but also the characterization.
People didn't like the characterization of Anakin in PT, so they blame Hayden. But it's actually Lucas' doing, you don't blame the actor for the script and characterization.

Exactly, I turned off the volume and I found his performance became a lot better.

I don't see Natalie Portman doing any better with those dialogues and the romance, she didn't get so much blame because she was famous before that and she wasn't playing a character who had appearance in OT.

It was weird at first but I grew to like it after I realized there was an interesting contrast between his regular voice and when he got angry. It also suited his Sith persona.

I personally liked Hayden's performances, especially in ROTS. One of my favourite scenes in AOTC is when Anakin confesses to Padmé that he slaughtered the Tuskan Raiders. I think a lot of people had a hard time seeing that Anakin become the Darth Vader they've always known.

I love Natalie's performance in TPM. It's muted and regal and, as George said, kabuki-like. It's pretty awesome.

I hated what happened to her character by the time we get to ROTS but maybe I'm supposed to hate it? :p It worked!

Hayden did just as good as Mark Hamill did imo. Both were different chat ra terse obviously but I think Mark's performances in ANH and ROTJ were aight but nothing special. Hayden and Mark both did AMAZING in ROTS and ESB, respectively. :D

I never had a problem with Hayden, I only had a problem with some of the dialogue of the scripts. I think Hayden knocked most of his lines out of the park. His interactions with Ewan McGregor in particular are great. SW fans are a hard bunch to please.

This is probably a bit of a long shot, but I do wonder if for some people their favorite entertainment franchises take on a sort of religious significance, or for some even take the place of such institutions.
Having grown up with a fairly Evangelical background, I've seen the fervour with which people will hold views related to their beliefs (i.e. my religion is the only one that's right, despite the fact that all religions make the same claim). I get the impression that some people project the same sort of passions and emotions onto their favorite entertainment franchises and sports teams as they would a religious icon or deity.
Perhaps I'm just clutching at straws here, but I think there are certain similarities.

trikadekaphile I realise its been a while, but do you mind expanding on your scepticism of Portman's acting abilities? Just curious, that's all.

Yes, this is definitely a thing. Some people will religiously re-read their chosen fantasy series every single year as though it were a holy text: Christopher Lee actually did this with Tolkien, I believe. And of course, many of us here have probably watched the Star Wars movies an unreasonable number of times, and pride ourselves on being able to quote relevant lines in the way that people used to do with the Bible. I don't know if that's healthy exactly, but I guess if you consider that Star Wars fan arguments may possibly be absorbing some of the energy that used to go into Crusades and religious wars, maybe it's not all bad.

    Yep, that's defiantly me.:p[face_blush]

But in all seriousness though, I do wonder whether the same religious-style fervour that driving incidents such as the crusades or modern Jihad, is also responsible for fuelling the more hysterical aspects of fandom culture, such as the insanely over-the-top backlash to the PT movies.[face_dunno]

This is why I was wise to sign up for this site people hear know the truth.

He was still making movies 5 years after the Prequels came out. Its good he took some time off if that is what he needed.

I know he just wrapped a few movies as well.

He's still making movies and has made millions so things are OK for him

The next movie seems to be First Kill with Bruce Willis. Whether this goes to actual wide release, limited or straight to home video I have no idea.

Yep, he got spooked by Hollywood. He got so many offers after ROTS and Jumper that he decided to semi-retire and start a farm in Canada.
