Has any PT era EU material done anything to flesh out this quote?

Owen considers going to rescue Obi-Wan from a bunch of insects a damnfool idealistic crusade. I bet he wonders why that old fool even went there.

 

did owen know that anakin was going to geonosis to rescue obi-wan... or just that he and padme were leaving, taking threepio with them... since obi-wan is the one who says the quote, he may or may not know if owen knew that anakin was off to geonosis... obi-wan might think that owen believed the whole clone wars to be a 'DFIC' -- perhaps gleaned from discussions when obiwan and owen meet on tatooine at various times.

side note: at first when you talked about going to rescue a planet of insects i thought you meant ord cestus... and wondered.. when did anakin join obi there?

I was always hoping for Owen to say that in AotC (Anakin: We have to stop the Seperatists! Owen: That's nothing but a damn fool idealistic crusade! Stay here and help me fix the vaporators, damnit!) But alas, no mention of it.

 

Wilde_Karde: While it would have been pretty neat to see SurlyUnc characterize the Clone Wars that way, Obi-Wan wouldn't have been in on the conversation, so it wouldn't have necessarily answered the question.

 

Is it possible that Anakin, perhaps, visited his step family...if only to visit his mother's grave and then perhaps he and Owen had a conversation about these issues? There are a couple of years between AOTC and ROTS. Maybe he even took Obi-Wan with him. How did Obi-Wan know who to give Luke to? Did Padme tell him or did Anakin fill him in? I have to think that there were other meetings between all of these men--Owen, Obi-Wan, and Anakin--before Anakin turned, and that possibly one of those meetings led to the quote.

Another question is: Was Owen fully informed about Anakin's turn to the darkside or was he merely told that Anakin died? He only mentions a fear that Luke has alot of his father in him...but that does not conclusively prove that he knew Anakin was Darth Vader.

 

Its more likely that Owen overheard 3PO say to Anakin that he had a message from Obi-wan Kenobi. Anakin and Padme left immediatly afterwards and Owen figured they left on a mission, which over time and considering the circumstances with Luke became some damn fool idealistic crusade.

 

There´s still hope this quote will be said in ROTS. Think about it; when Obi-Wan arrived at the Lars moisture farm at the end with baby Luke. Owen says (about Anakin): "He should have stayed here, and not gotten involved. Shouldn´t have followed you on some damnfool idealistic crusade."

 

It could be just a line he told Luke, no actual reference to events.

Wait, what am I saying, as if Ben Kenobi would ever lie to Luke...

 

It's possible that Obi-Wan was refering to Anakin becoming a Jedi.
