I think this deserves a thread because all other discussions on the topic i've found have been more along the lines of 'what is the official stance on this part of the Force?'. Since i find there to be many different (sometimes contradictory) explanations of the Force in both film canon and EU, i think it makes some sense for individuals to imagine the force as they see fit. If you have anything to say about either side of the Force, any force-using faction, or other in-universe spiritual element of Star Wars, say it here.
My personal headcanon on the force is that it began whole, as the spark of life that encompassed both creation and destruction. It wasn't until something sapient used the force to commit an act of great love or great hatred that it was torn apart, split by the duality within reasoning beings. It was intent that birthed morality, and shattered the universe in two. The Light and Dark sides emerged.
Now the problem with this when it comes to canon is that it's a bit alien to the concept of 'balance' since it's not natural really. Bu I'm certain you could either make the initial act one of cruelty, causing the Dark side to be a wound in the force and the 'unnatural' part of the equation, or you could play up the duality aspect to make an equal amount of the light and the dark mean balance. Of course that brings up what exactly counts as a light-side or dark-side act, but i'll leave that for someone else to discuss.

Oh hey, i posted in that in 2011 and completely forgot (though my opinion has changed a bit). I love your analogy with the bottle, how you can screw the lid off or smash it, and that the dark side is smashing the bottle. Easier, but not only is it destructive but detrimental to your goal, of actually drinking what's in the bottle.

I posted my headcanon once a while back.

Taking the Lovecraftian Abomination easy way out. [face_plain] I'm disappointed in me.
