I'm new here, and I need some help.

Just a bit of setup here. I wanted to do a different costume for each day of C III, and I wanted to do a theme. I was going to do an ESB theme, since it's my favorite of the films. (so fare :) ) However, that was going to be way too expensive, so instead I'm going Obi-wan. Since Obi-wan was bast on the classic Wizard archetype, and since Gorge did the prequels after the OT, I've decided to take a que from Merlin, and age Obi-wan in reavers. :lol (EP 4 day one, EP 3 day two, and so on)

Well, I have spent weeks reading every thing that I can about the fabric parts of the costumes, and I'm more lost them ever. I know for EP I the under Tunic, outer Tunic, Tabards, and Obi, where all made of Khadi (Indian home spun). However, since I never really liked that outfit, I'm just going to cheat, and use my EP II costume with a different hair style that day. I know, it's not terribly accurate, but (IMO) there just not different enough, to warrant the construction of another outfit.

Anyways, What I kneed to know is:

    1. What fabric should I use for the EP II/III tunic, tabards, and obi? I know the fabric in those 2 films were custom made, but what is the closest thing to it, that I could probably find?

    2. What was the Long tunic, tabard, and obi, made of, in EP 5 (old Obi-wan)?

    3. Everyone does the OT Obi-wan with a long Tunic, scarf like tabard, and an Obi, but a lot of the references material I was looking at, looks like there's a second longer set of tabards, hanging down from the Obi, between the scarf-like obi. What do everyone think?

    4. What is the best pattern for the EP II/III Tunic? I found More sites then I could ever have imagined on making these items, and so many of them suggest different things. I know I will probably have to modify an existing pattern, but witch one? I want these pieces to be as accurate as posable.

    5. Same as question 3, but for the EP 5 long tunic.

    6. I plan on using that great tutorial on Amber's site, for the outer brown cloak/robe, and adding the shoulder tucks for the EP II/III days. Is that cool, or is the EP II/III robe different in other ways from the EP I robe?

(Amber's site for those who don't know, is here http://www.rebellegion.com/jedigarb/robe.html )

    7. There seems to be some dispute to the size of the sleeves, pleat, and hood of the Brown cloak/robe. Can someone please tell me what is really movie accurate?

    Thanks so much.
    Jason

I'm just finishing my jedi costume, although not a specific obi-wan, I used the simplicity pattern 5840, and since I'm a little larger than the pattern allowed, I just made the pattern bigger.
As far as the material, I used a wool blend twill, looks really nice, hangs well, and not very hot!!
this pattern will also have a robe pattern i believe, altough I bought mine from mystikmerchants really nice.
I havn't seen anything really on the inner tunic, but, that should'nt be that hard to figure out.

    1. What fabric should I use for the EP II/III tunic, tabards, and obi?

A crinkle wool for the outer tunic/tabbard/obi IF you can find it. It's not easy to find. You could do a linen and see if you can wash it and get it to crinkle just right. Fabric swatches help with this. You can test on a little bit to see how the fabric behaves when washed.

Inner tunic...Crinkled India Cotton or a crinkled cotton gauze (but that's thinner).

    4. What is the best pattern for the EP II/III Tunic?

Padawan's guide has the best and most up to date info on patterns etc, from my experience. Lots of very good suggestions there.

    6. I plan on using that great tutorial on Amber's site, for the outer brown cloak/robe, and adding the shoulder tucks for the EP II/III days. Is that cool, or is the EP II/III robe different in other ways from the EP I robe?

I believe the only difference is the tuck. :) There could be more fullness in the body, not sure.

    7. There seems to be some dispute to the size of the sleeves, pleat, and hood of the Brown cloak/robe. Can someone please tell me what is really movie accurate?

This should help you out with sizing. Unless you are exactly the same size as Ewan, go with porportions that look good on your body otherwise everything will look slightly off.

Unfortunately...I have no experience with the OT Obi-Wan costume, so can't really help you there. But Maggie has some pictures of the EP4 costume at:

A good fabric to use for the Tunics and Tabards and pants is a fabric called osnaburg. It does not have the crinkle texture but has the look of the fabric.
I have used crinkle guaze as previously mentioned but you have to double the amount of the fabric as it does not handle any stress and pulls at the seams.
A good pattern to start with is a Karate GI.
I have finally after many evolutions of my pattern have a pretty accurate custom pattern.

The robe I have also tweeked with and have yet to find an accurate pattern you can buy. I have drafted a pattern my self and it is as close as I think it is without actually having the real deal to compare to.
I do agree about the sleeves and hood issue. They are full and the sleeves are fuller at the bottom, but are not a typical sleeve in as far as to say they are rectangular in a way.
    Hope this is helpful.
