He’s also apparently confirmed to be coming back as a different character.

Perfect finale, no notes. Amazing way to do this arc for Pike.

    My reaction:

"Oh, cool we get to see that."
Oh, crap, we get to see that!"

Getting to see the TWOK+ red uniforms (which I’m learning today are nicknamed “monster maroons”), but with only the slight detailing update on the shoulders/arms to evoke the new detailing on the TOS-era uniforms on SNW was a pleasant surprise.

Awesome getting to see an alt-take on Balance of Terror and letting the Romulan BOP get some cool shots in. Looks like they used the PIC model, which I guess means that's the end of the "it's a TMP-era Romulan ship" theories. The Romulan fleet was also an unexpected sight- including at least one Warbird that was very close to the design I've been mulling over as a Enterprise-C-era fan design in my head for the last 4 years (though I thought giving it a helmet head with a neck too far out would be too close to the D'deridex and would have thought a Lost Era version would be more conservative in that regard. Guess I was wrong if they had these in TOS-era!).

And Jimmy! The new actor did a pretty solid job. He evoked Pine more than Shatner, but there's enough common DNA in there still that it worked.

The only thing that would've made this episode utterly without flaw was if
they'd gotten James Frain to play the Romulan Commander.

As it was, it got me thinking about
Spock, and all the times he's save everyone. Granted, it's Kirk who consistently gets to be The Big Damn Hero, but it's Spock who consistently comes up with the ideas that allow Kirk to be heroic. Spock communicated with V'ger. Spock sussed out Khan's tactics in TWOK. Spock figured out that the aliens were trying to communicate with (extinct) whales. Spock calculated the time travel to & from the 1980's. Spock figured out the flaw in General Chang's Bird of Prey. And Spock made harmony between Romulans & Vulcans possible. I'm glad the episode is giving Spock his due respect.

Eventually the Romulans will send an assassin robot back in time to kill Spock's human mom before Spock is even born.

I actually had the same thought, expecting the Sarek actor to play the Commander.

Balance of Terror re-- re-- remix. *record scratch* reeeemix.

I like that the Romulans are TOS inspired. Not so much a plot that relies on time travel.

It was bold of them to attempt a re-interpretation of an all-time great iconic Trek episode. Solid story, but it won't go down in history as the legendary original. From the moment Pike found himself in the ship's chapel, I was comparing every scene and shot to BoT, so it was hard for me to see it as its own thing. NuKirk didn't work for me; just didn't have the Shat's presence or charisma. The Romulan commander didn't have the gravitas of Mark Lenard, IMO.

Anson Mount is on his way to becoming one of my favorite captains. He can take his place alongside Shatner, Stewart, and Brooks as one of the all-time greats.

One of the details I like from the sets is the model of the two-masted sailing schooner, which I'm sure is supposed to represent a well-known vessel of the early US Navy known as "the lucky little Enterprise", USS Enterprise (1799) - Wikipedia

Wait, what? Among fans I know, reactions to 2009 Trek were lukewarm at best. Mine was lower than that.

I figured out it they had jumped forward to Balance of Terror probably right before the red alert arm went off so it took me a bit longer than when Pike was engaging in the happy privilege to marry two crewmembers. Like in the Kevlin timeline (and Kelvin got a shout out too) there's definitely a certain rhythm to certain fixed events it seems (or as Spock Prime said in a cut line that "the timeline is attempting to repair itself"). Was interesting to hear Spock call it the Prime Timeline as it hasn't been said in dialogue before and I'm fairly certain the writers got the name from Superboy Prime. Anyway my favourite bit wasn't the "two of us are of a kind" moment (Which is still awesome) but the Romulan reveal which they leaned way into with the same music, splashes of light across the eyes (they need to bring that back more often, it's a cool look), and the dramatic shocking zoom ins.

New New Kirk had the charisma and one or two Shatner-style line delivers ("Tell me... right now and I'll back down.") Don't think he looks the most like Shatner, the great thing about Pine's recasting is that if you squint and/or take off your glasses he can kinda really closely pass for Shatner. (Also he's awesome too). Would love to see more of this Kirk but he did come up with a "bluff with a fleet of drones" move which totally is a Kirk move so it gets a pass. I honestly thought they spent the whole episode leaning into Kirk was going to die and change the fate of the universe. (I hate it when Kirk dies, stop please). But making Spock the lynchpin, and especially considering he's the one who brings peace to Romulus and Vulcan, makes also a huge amount of sense.

the cliffhanger-y last 2 minutes wasn't really needed, it really felt like what it was, random out of nowhere cliffhanger that had little if nothing to do with the (very cool) episode that just happened.

Ok, so this one is bugging me as a larger Trek-verse question as a whole since we've had two Time Crystal centric moments with Pike on DISCO and SNW. Why didn't the Kilingons weaponize the Time Crystals? It is pretty much the ultimate weapon. Are the monks on Borath that stuck up about not letting anyone use them (aside from y'know Pike, twice). Maybe they're convinced that mucking with time isn't honourable (but y'know we've seen multiple dishonourable Klingons doing schemes). Probably something really really had happened with the time crystals so even the Klingons won't screw with and the monks are sticking by that. But yah I guess any answer can be "the Borath monks can be really nasty/picky about using them"

Paul actually looks more like Pine, with some Shatner flairs. But then, I never really saw Pine looking like Shatner at all. So that's never really been an issue so much. The performance is what matters more than the look.

And I want to say DIS mentioned the Klingons don't use them because past efforts took a bad turn so they're guarded to keep them away from people.

I want to see her do a comic scene with Anson Mount. Those two ought to play off each other hilariously.

    Carol **** Kane.

    Hot damn.

So, late to the conversation but something I've been wondering; assuming the timeline did'nt alter in other ways between Pike warning the cadets and the Neutral Zone Incident and the praetor we see (which is a woman) is supposed to be the same one mentioned in TOS (who, I believe, is called by male pronouns), is this our first look at a transgender Romulan?

I think he ended up looking pretty close by Beyond IMO (mainly due to the hair).

    You just learned that?

I honestly expected them to do that, actually.

I remember it being pretty positive overall; there was some backlash, but it was'nt as heavy as that towards Into Darkness.

You know who needs to be in Star Trek?

Annie Potts. I would kill for that.

I honestly thought this was a thing that was common knowledge amid ST fans.

I feel like it must have been a cosplay fandom thing. Or anyone deeply into the movie props/costumes or differences in uniforms. They were always described generically as the TWOK-era uniforms, the red movie uniforms, etc whenever I saw them described.

I've never done cosplay and I'm not particulerly "deep" into props and such.

But then again, it's not like I'm going around calling them "monster maroons" in casual coversation or something - truthfully that very well could be the case as I don't rightly remember where I first saw the term used, other then that it was online, many years ago and I saw it (and have continiued to see it) enough times that I came to know it was fairly common; I think I just ended up assuming that was the common nickname most fans used *shrug*.
