Remember the part before the big Pod racing scene, where all of them are in the garage. Qui Gon just won the game of chance through the force usage, and pissed of Watto. Watto went to Anakin and spoke in his own language, saying something (the dialog escapes me now), about his friend (Jinn) needing to keep his gambling in check, then he left. When Qui Gon went to Anakin afterwards, Anni said "what did that mean?" Then Qui Gon said something like it wasnt important.

How did he understand what Watto said? He couldnt have read his mind or had any kind of sense for what Watto said because Watto is immune to the Jedi's ability.

I can accept why Han understands Chewbacca. They have been friends for a looong time, so Im sure during some of the boring ass time alone in space he picked up wookienese.

    Anyway, what the hell?

Same way Anakin understands Watto. Huttese is like the second official language of the GFFA.

First off, They are speaking the Hutts language? Damn, I feel dumb I didnt recognize that.

Is this a fact, if so, its real cool.

But to respond, its not the same thing. Anakin was raised there, as he said, "all my life."

Qui Gon has never been there nor had any particular nowledge of the Hutts. Unlike Anakin.

The Jedi are probably trained to try to pick up on different languages throughout the galaxy, because it would probably be helpful on missions. :)

Qui-Gon knew the language because that is the language that he learned so that he could seduce Shmi.

Qui-Gon knew that Anakin was his son and he did not want the others to catch on to him.

Hey, why else would he to a DNA test?

Which is the real reason that he was the one that erased the Jedi archives.

Thats why Jedi have diplomatic and other classes while they are still younglings and padawans. To learn different things in the galaxy.

Apparently almost everyone speaks hutt. It's just a common language in the GFFA.

The only time we see someone that doesn't is in RotJ. 3P0 translates for Jabba when speaking to Boussh, so we can assume that Boussh doesn't speak hutt. But Leia later seems to understand him, so it must have been part of the act.

You know, I'd be a lot more interested in knowing how the heck Dooku understood what Poggle was chirping in AOTC.

Guys, be a little bit more mature in this thread, please.

The truth is, just as basic is the prime language of the Republic, there are others that are secondary that are commonly known. In the Jedi Temple, there are hundereds of different Jedi from hundreds of different cultures. Jedi pick these things up as they grow just like we would only pick up the language that is used in our family growing up. I live in America so my prime language is English but my family is Italian in roots so they speak some Italian. As a result of that, i know some Italian.

I assert that Huttese is actually quite a common language in the GFFA, even during the austere days of the Old Republic, even within the core worlds like Coruscant. To prove my case, I present exhibit A:

In Attack of the Clones, Palpatine's Rodian secretary(?) announces the arrival of the Loyalist Committee in Huttese.
The defense rests. Gentlemen, good evening.

JediKnight, undoubtedly that will be in the first episode of CSI: Tatooine

Bubba the genius offers compelling evidence. I think the answer lies with our Canadian friends. Perhaps basic and huttese were the official languages of the galaxy until the dark times, until the Empire.

Army Special Forces learn other languages to help them communicate with locals; I don't see why Jedi would be different.

Seeing as how common Huttese is in the GFFA, it's not suprising the Jedi know it. Huttese seems to be the chosen language for lowlifes, and the Jedi deal with a lot of lowlifes.
I can't think of another common language aside from 'basic' and Huttese.
