Notes: Written for the September 50 Sentence Challenge


curiouser and curiouser


01. Curiosity

Ted had met the girl in the penguin suit years ago, and he never found out who she was; but every year on Halloween, he went back to the rooftop to look for her, whoever she was.


02. Nonsense

Barney thought Ted?s search was silly (then again, Barney thought everything except a one-hour stand was silly), so he decided it was time for a little penguin practical joke.


03. Childhood

Barney hadn?t known his dad (though he?d seen him every day on The Price is Right), but he had still had a good childhood; his mother had been a wonderful parent.


04. Adulthood

The group wondered how Barney had turned into . . . this . . . until they got the story out of him about the Peace Corps and the girl who had left him for a man in a suit.


05. Home

Most of them, at one point or another, lived in that apartment; they had all called it home.


06. Rabbit-hole

Marshall felt as though he had gone down the rabbit hole and into a strange new world filled with fantastic things; but this place wasn?t Wonderland, it was New Jersey.


07. Pool

The building next door had a rooftop pool, and for years, Marshall stood on the ledge, trying to convince himself to jump over the gap and test it out.


08. Tears

Ted raced back home, exuberant after his night with Robin, to find Marshall sitting on the stairs, crying, holding Lily?s engagement ring.


09. Caucus

When Barney called for a vote about plans for the evening, somehow, his vote counted more than everyone else?s combined.


10. Race

It was that stupid race?s fault?Marshall couldn?t run, so Barney decided to without training, and then he collapsed on the subway, so Ted had to rescue him, but to get there he had to jump the gate, and then he got arrested, and he had to attend his hearing?so he and Robin were late to the airport and missed the plane, and there went that job interview.


11. Croquet

Ted enjoyed a nice, sophisticated evening of reciting ancient works?but he also enjoyed a good robots vs. wrestlers match.


12. Advice

?Nothing good ever happens after 2 a.m.,? Ted?s mother always said, and he learned later that he should have just taken her advice and gone home.


13. Caterpillar

Barney saw his transformation from earth nerd into suited guy as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly; the rest of the group couldn?t even picture Barney in anything other than a suit.


14. March

After all their planning, Marshall and Ted?s March Madness picks turned into nothing after the first game?but for pizza and beer, they and the girls were willing to turn the board (from Lily?s schoolroom, a fact Ted and Marshall tried to hide) into a bracket to see who Barney?s stalker was.


15. Hare

?There is no way anyone can pick up a girl while wearing a rabbit suit,? Ted said, right on cue, waiting excitedly for Barney to say ?Challenge accepted!? and the ensuing show.


16. Hatter

Barney put great stock into his tailor; Marshall was uncomfortable for oh so many reasons.


17. Mercurial

Barney?s mood could shift quickly, and he wasn?t an easy friend to have; but, Ted learned, he was a loyal one.


18. Milliner

Every time Lily was stressed out, she shopped?and the credit cards bills went up, and up, and up . . . until they affected her and Marshall?s ability to buy an apartment.


19. Tea

There was nowhere ted would rather be than in MacLaren?s, having a drink with his friends.


20. Party

 

Hehehehehe! That was so cool. I'd use the legendary line, but Mira already did.

Robin had laid her heart on the line and gotten it broken, but (blond!) Ted was proud of how much she had grown in the five years he?d known her.

01. Demon

Sometimes the gang got the feeling that Barney . . . wasn?t entirely human.


02. Barber

Barney had a barber and a tailor to take care of his needs?what, everyone else didn?t?


03. Fleet

So what if Marshall could run fast?Barney could have a steak and still get somewhere first ( . . . by faking a heart attack).


04. Street

Marshall sat at the window, staring down at the street in front of Ted?s apartment, waiting for someone to come take his barrel.


05. False

Barney could fake anything?his accent, his looks, his name, his age, his nationality?and he would do it all to get a girl.


06. Charges

Apparently diving into the Hudson River to get away from a crazed, desperate woman you promised your ex-girlfriend you wouldn?t sleep with was illegal?who knew?


07. Pious

Ted didn?t act holier-than-thou (with him, it was more-knowledgeable-than-thou), but he did disapprove of many of Barney?s ways (until he was single and trying to have some fun).


08. Contrition

Barney didn?t care much for the women he slept with, but he did them the respect of remembering their faces (so he could avoid them in the future); he didn?t recognize this girl, so when he apologized for not knowing who she was, he meant it.


09. Adopted

Barney pretended lots of things about his father?that he was an astronaut, that he was Bob Barker, that he was black?but he wasn?t ready to face the fact that Jerry was a normal suburban dad.


10. Adapted

Robin had a hard time adjusting to living in New York, but with help from three very good friends (and Barney), she made it her home.


11. Worst

They all remembered the worst things they?d done or had done to them, and they each had a person they didn?t want to see walk through the door?but Ted had to face the fact that Stella was there.


12. Pies

Robin and Ted tried not to look at each other as they stood in Robin?s (very small) kitchen, making pies for Lily?s Thanksgiving dinner.


13. Customer

All five of them were regular patrons of MacLaren?s, to the point where they had a ?usual? table and got irritated when someone else got there first.


14. Sit

Ted slid into the booth beside Robin and put his arm around her shoulders, happy to finally get to do that.


15. Alms

Ted and Robin were trying to do a good thing on Thanksgiving . . . Barney was serving court-ordered community service.


16. Green

New York wasn?t Minnesota, or Canada, or Ohio?it was its own place, and Marshall, Robin, and Ted learned that, industrial eyesores or not, it was the best city on Earth.


17. Finch

Barney and Marshall dreamed about flying over the city like birds, free, in their nightgowns.


18. Miracle

Ted was okay, and Barney was okay, and they were all going to be okay?because sometimes miracles did happen.


19. Elixir

Ted didn?t know what was in Carl?s special shots, but he couldn?t remember anything from a few minutes after he took them until the next morning.


20. Sensitivities

Barney, who would usually make jokes about anything and everything, was sensitive about his dad; he didn?t want to talk about what happened in the Museum of Natural History with Robin, so she let it be until he was ready.


21. Pretty

Ted wasn?t happy to have to get a tattoo removed (that was a lesson in what not to do while drunk), but he was very pleased with the doctor who walked through the door . . . very pleased indeed.


22. Women

Barney loved women, all different kinds of women (and by that, he meant women with

These make me miss this show even more. I can't wait for the next season.

01. Autumn

Lily loved autumn in the city?well, to be honest, she loved every season in the city?though she was willing, for Thanksgiving, to visit Marshall?s family . . . but she refused to leave forever.


02. Return

Marshall was devastated when he thought Lily had returned to the city without calling him; in reality, she returned later than he thought, and she was heartbroken, too.


03. Turn

?Oo, my turn, my turn!? Barney shouted, waving his hand in the air and spouting off another pun.


04. Seasons

Barney loved girls in the autumn, girls in the winter, girls in the spring; but he mostly loved them in the summer, when the sundresses came out.


05. Fruition

Lily?s plans didn?t always come to fruition, but this one had to; as much as she hated to say it, because Ted and Robin were her best friends, they would make each other miserable if they stayed together.


06. Gathering

Ted happily recited to the intellectuals gathered around him, totally in his element, but he realized that even though this was his dream, he missed his friends.


07. Setting

Barney forced them all to attend his one-man play; Marshall got frustrated and used one of his slaps.


08. Wilt

Lily thought Barney?s obvious non-attempts to get a woman meant that he was still in love with Robin; well, she was half-right.


09. Brittle

Barney?s feelings were more fragile than anyone realized; but when Ted discovered what was bugging him, he stopped sleeping with Robin and tried to let Barney have a chance with her.


10. Brisk

Marshall ran; Barney just briskly walked into a restaurant and ordered a stake, calculating how fast he would need to eat it and when he should call the ambulance so he could beat his friends.


11. Crumble

Lily, Ted, and Marshall watched Robin and Barney?s relationship crumbling, so Lily decided to break them up; after all her attempts, she thought that they might have withstood her efforts and hoped they had?but it wasn?t enough, and Barney and Robin were through.


12. Piles

Lily had piles and piles of clothes spread around her apartment; Robin was horrified to see how much her friend spent on them.


13. Rake

Barney raked his eyes across the bar, trying to decide who he would seduce that night.


14. Deciduous

Robin felt miserable after she chose love over her career and got left with a broken heart, but Ted thought her choice was a sign of how much she had changed for the better since he?d met her.


15. Leaves

Leaves fell throughout the city, symbolizing the coming of winter; but in Ted?s heart, it was already as cold as ice?without Stella, he was miserable.


16. Change

Even Barney?careless Barney, who only wanted women for one night?could change: first for Robin . . . and then for Nora.


17. Crisp

The bacon was crisp and the pancakes were fluffy; Robin didn?t care, two years later, that Lily had broken her and Ted up, but that wasn?t going to stop her from eating the breakfast.


18. Yellow

Ted cocked his head and stared at the yellow liquid in the glass, tying hazily to determine how many drinks he?d had.


19. Orange

Orange didn?t look good on many people, but Robin pulled it off; Barney was impressed.


20. Crimson

Lily had changed her hair?it was a darker red instead of the bright red she?d had before she left?but Marshall thought the new color suite

There was something about Robin that instantly attracted Ted; he started obsessing over her and even threw parties to have an excuse to invite her over.


02. Trace

Lily carefully drew on the paper, making a rough sketch she intended to paint over.


03. Trepidation

Barney was hesitant to admit his feelings for Robin, but Lily, who thought they would be perfect together, pushed tried to push him into it.


04. Trade

Robin would trade anything to get back the moment when she could have had Barney; his thoughts, though, were on obtaining Nora?Robin was far from his mind.


05. Tugging

Lily tugged on Barney?s arm, urging him to go out and confess his feelings for Robin?but he ended up in another woman?s bed, and then cursed his timing when Robin came looking for comfort.


06. Tisk

Barney shook his head and tsked, reveling in his friends? ignorance of suits and bar behavior.


07. Tetchy

Lily had been feeling tetchy all week; Marshall, far from being irritated, was ecstatic at the proof that his wife was pregnant.


08. Tempting

It was so tempting to admit her feelings to Barney, and Robin was about to do it?but then the phone rang, and it was Nora, and Barney forgot Robin existed.


09. Trance

Lily was practically in a pampered trance, and she didn?t hear the phone go off any of the times Marshall called her to apologize for ditching her at the B&B and heading to Chicago with Ted.


10. Terra

Lily felt that if she didn?t take the chance to become a painter, she would always regret it; a miserable three months, a stolen credit card, and a mean art teacher brought her back to earth, and she realized that painting was fun, but it wasn?t her calling.


11. Tick

Ted?s biological clock started ticking the day Marshall and Lily got engaged; he decided to set out on a quest to find the mother of his future children.


12. Taupe

Barney sneered at the color and said it was too plain; he mad Robin go back in and change before their date.


13. Terracotta

Robin had five dogs, so she tended not to keep knickknacks (not that she was the type to keep knickknacks anyway); but Lily was an artist, so Ted and Marshall?s apartment was sprinkled with stuff.


14. Tranquil

Lily, Marshall, Ted, and Robin were enjoying a nice, quiet couples evening until Barney burst through the door and demanded that they go to a club?laser tagging?New Jersey?down to the bar for one drink?anything.


15. Tough

Barney was tough, so Ted was surprised that he could lose his heart; despite his past with Robin?and his feelings the last time Robin and Barney had gotten together, even briefly?Ted began to root for them.


16. Torque

Barney was never really into science, but he learned plenty about angles and torque from . . . other activities.


17. Titan

Barney was an important member of Goliath National Bank, but no one could ever figure out what he actually did there.


18. Turmoil

Robin was in turmoil as she watched Barney fall for Nora, but she was his friend; she would guide him through the awkward conversation until he felt comfortable enough to continue on his own.


19. Twisted

It was twisted, this desire to settle down with someone, to be honest with a woman?but Barney, inexplicably, liked Nora, and he was willing to do whatever it took to get her.


20. Trust

Nora didn?t trust Barney, even after he started telling the truth?mostly because the truth consisted of more than 200 lies he?d told women to get them into bed?but there was something about him that made her want to come back.


21. Toddle

Barney and Robin thought they were just pacifying Lily by telling her they were in a relationship, but ily knew they had taken their first, toddling steps together as boyfriend and girlfriend.


22. Theft

No one was really sure whether

It was totally a good use. I love the slaps I think Marshall still has a couple more to use!
