Well, it's been a while since I've read a book in which somebody makes a lightsaber, so don't quote me on this, but I think it's a few weeks to a month. This varies, of course. I think it took Maul a week or two in Darth Maul:Shadow Hunter. Corran took some kind of shortcut that sped up the process quite a bit in I, Jedi. I haven't read SotE for a while, but I think Luke would fall into the first timeframe I mentioned.

Hopefully someone will come along with a positive answer for you :)

During the Clone Wars, Jedi could assemble lightsabers in only a couple of days. Figures, since prequel Jedi lose their lightsabers so often. But Luke prefers it when students take more time to build it- at least a week.

As mentioned above, Jedi can construct lightsabers within a matter of weeks. This method of building a lightsaber is intended only during desperate times.
It is preferred for a Jedi to take his/her time with the construction. A lightsaber is supposed to be an extention of the Jedi themselves. Therefore, it is a rituation and ceremonious. When a Jedi rushes the process, it detracts from the somberness of the endeavor.

coupled with thought and meditation, the process can take anywhere from weeks to months.

I made mine using popsicle sticks, tin foil, and masking tape in just under 20 minutes.

Hmmm... I wonder if it works? I've never had any reason to activate it...

ma*king tape is evil duct tape is better

a saber's design is very special to a jedi so i guess for your first one it would take a while once you build several after getting your hand cut off or other ways to lose a saber you begin to mass produce them

You mean to say it's a ceremonial ritual?

Books that describe building of lightsabers:

Anakin Skywalker builds his lightsaber in Jedi Quest: Path to Truth.

Luke builds his in Shadow of the Empire and Radio Drama of Return of the Jedi.

Kyp builds his in Jedi Academy: Dark Apprentice.

As Patches noted, Corron builds his in I, Jedi.

Jaina Solo, Jacen Solo, Tenel Ka, and Lowabacca build theirs at Young Jedi Knight: Lightsaber.

There is a comic in one of Star Wars Tales that Maul builds his double-blade lightsaber.

Took me only a day, though I had to have plenty of back-up batteries cause I kept running through them like crazy. But then you're looking for actual lightsabers and not cheap costume props getting transformed into something a little more realistic.

It should take a Jedi a few weeks or a few months to construct their lightsabers. For beginners, it is supposed to take several months. Knights should take sevral weeks or months to build a lightsaber because it's expected that it becomes a little easier after the first lightsaber you build. Masters should take several weeks because it's expected that they've made enough lightsabers ovber the years that it won't take them terribly long.

However, during the Clone Wars several Jedi Masters devised a short cut that takes only a couple of days. It's advised that this method only be used if one doesn't have enough time to spare in making their lightsaber.

Back on the real world thing, Popular Mechanics ran an article a few years back that reminded me a lot of a lightsaber. It's called a plasmasaber, but looks a lot like a lightsaber. Pretty cool.
