I'm trying to figure out how many GBs it takes to store 1 hr of DV AVI (I know DV runs at 25 megabits per second, but I forget how to convert that to bytes; 1 byte = 4 bits or was it 8?). My calculations (probably flawed) bring it to the ballpark of 20+GBs / hr.

Anyhow, any feedback would be appreciated.

Also, my friend captured an 1hr of Quicktime DV via FCP HD and says total file size is less than 11GBs (is the Apple DV codec that much better compression-wise compared to windows based codecs?)

for uncompressed video, i generally follow the rule of 1 minute = approx. 1GB (i think it's more like 1.2GB) of storage...

    ...but that's uncompressed...

    It's 12 to 15 gigs for 1 hour, from what I've seen.

I just did a DVD project for a co-worker and had about 23 GB for 1 hour and 50 minutes.

i dunno if pal and ntsc is different but 1GB of drive space will give me 4.5 - 5 minutes of PAL-DV

I was really excited, until I realized this thread wasn't about Ghostbusters.

    1 bit = 8 bytes...
and in FCP, it is somewhere around 1 hour = 12 GB.
    From my experience.

Yea, 12 gigs sounds about right. Movie Spoof was 45 minutes and took up about 9-10 gigs.

Something to remember is if you're using MS Movie Maker to put stuff back onto tape you'll need free space equal to the size of your file. Eg. for an hours worth of DV that clocks in around 12GB, you'll need at least 12GB free on the drive.
