I will be a new dad in a couple of months, and having given this some thought, I plan to show the Star Wars movies 456-123. The problem is, whichever trilogy gets shown second will be weakened by having seen the other trilogy. If you see 123 first, then when seeing 456, you lose the surprise of Vader fathering Luke & Leia, and more importantly, you loste onf of the greatest film villains of all time in Vader, as he does not come across as the classic space opera bad guy after havign viewed the prequels. However, is you see 456 first, then you basically already know what's going to happen in 123, and this this story loses much of its appeal. Personally, I think 456 are much better (yes, I saw those first and yes, I still like the prequels) so I don't want the impact of those movies being lessened by having my son watch 123 first.

Just make sure you squeeze in the Clone Wars animated movie between 2 and 3.

I don't think I've ever watched all the movies in a short period of time in a row.

Typically, I watch the original trilogy, in order, over the course of three nights. Some time later, maybe weeks later, I might watch the prequels in order, one per night.

I watch the OT much more often because I have DVD copies of them at my apartment at college. I only have Episode III on DVD of the prequels at my apartment. Episodes I and II are at home, so it's a rarity that I get to see them, anyway.

Thank you everyone that posted. I have made my mind up and that is to have him view them 456123. My main points to back that would be if I went 123456 I would spoil the most awesome surprise of Vader telling Luke he's his father. The opening scene in 4 is one of the best movie openings ever, and most importantly 456 are the stronger movies that we all fell in love with. If he loves them as much as I do he will want to fill in the missing pieces by watching 123.

P.S If I start with Ep 1 I would pause and explain trade blockades to a 4 year old.

I'd go 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. It's the best of both worlds. You keep the surprise of Vader, and you keep the Prequels leading up to the end.

I'd suggest not. I started watching when I still had a childish mind. I almost steered clear away from Star Wars. Now, I just steer away from the Clone Wars itself. It's cheesy, has a horrible plot-line, just terrible.

    To Author:

I suggest that you don't let your son watch it unless he really wants to and begs you.

I'd squeeze the GT CW show in between 2 and 3 but steer clear of TCW.

    45612CW3

Builds up to 3 as the end to the Saga that way with Anakins lighting etc

That's the way ill show my twins :)

I agree with this preferred order. It also keeps 3 and 4 a good distance apart, hence minimising the inevitable technical jarring and starts proceedings with the epic fly over. You get to "I am your father", find out how the heck that happened, and then see the conclusion. Perfect!

As I mentioned earlier, if you want an ever purer form of this flashback method, I recommend doing it this way: watch 4-5-6 (stop 6 after Obi-Wan talks to Luke on Dagobah), then 1-2-3, then the rest of 6.
