    After being a lifelong resident of a town who's name gets butchered (Des Moines, people ALWAYS go with the Des Plaines pronunciation) I've gotten used to it and I'm fairly certain that the residents of Goleta are also as used to your father's way of saying it.

    Yay, I got it right.

    It's not as crazy as the town my sister lives next to: Palestine, Texas.

    And they pronounce it "Pal-es-tin." 8-}

    I went to Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, and I always pronounced it like they do there: Go-leet-uh.

    But I'm fairly certain the correct pronunciation is goh-let-ah, since it's a spanish word. :p

    Most Spanish-origin place names in the U.S. are "Americanized" and not pronounced as they would be in Spanish. Do you say "Lohs Ahn Hey Leiss"? No, you say "Loss An Jell Uhs."

    I know the correct (Americanized) pronunciation of Goleta because I live in Central California, and I have been through that town a number of times on the way to Sahn Tah Bahr bah rah.

    I pronounce it GO-LEE-TA because I've been to UC Santa Barbara enough times. Crazily enough, UC Santa Barbara, NOT in Santa Barbara at all!

    The bigger question should be how does one pronounce "San Luis Obispo"?
