I think this line caught us all a little off guard considering what had just happened (Anakin killing Dookoo execution style). Not to mention I think we were all expecting Anakin to pretty much be on the verge of the darkside the entire time leading up to his complete turn.

My question is, why do you think Anakin said this.

Was it (A) He wanted to appear mature and wise to Obi-wan and the chancellor. Kinda like when he was blowing smoke with Obi-wan before he went to Utapau (sp).

Or is it (B) GL was trying to show us that Anakin really was a good person, that wanted to do right. He just got involved with the wrong person and was not properly nurtured by the Jedi.

Of course, any of your own thoughts or ideas are welcome as well...

    Great question. I say both.

It's a reverse of the AOTC duel against Dooku where he rushed in.
He's now in partnership with Obi Wan. It's interesting that
Anakin sort of takes the lead, but in a much more rational and calm
    manner than in AOTC.

I agree that it also attempts to show that he's a good kid.

    The Novel, pg 114:
"I say...,"he put in slowly, "patcience."
"Patcience?" Obi-Wan lifted an eyebrow. "That's a plan?"
"You know what Master Yoda says:Patcience you must have, until the mud settles, and the water becomes clear. So lets wait."
    Obi-Wan looked skeptical. "Wait."
"For the security patrol. A couple of droids will be along in a moment or two; they'll have to drop the ray shield to take us into custody."
    "And then?"
Anakin shrugged cheerfully. "And then we'll wipe them out."

Yeah, I'm a fan of the novel, but IMO this is the one place where Stove went a little over the top trying to find something to jab Anakin with. Just my opinion, nothing more.

it's a great exchange between anakin and obiwan - and they both know there's some irony going on here. anakin says "i say patience" knowing it will catch obiwan off guard and obiwan does respond in near-sarcasm but it's a testament to their relationship as older and younger brother here. they both know each other so well.

I love how the movie started out with this kind of dialogue between Anakin and Obi-wan. It adds credibility to the line about him being a "good friend" in ANH.

thats what i love about the novel. it depicted them as this awesome duo that were heroes of the galaxy and every kid wanted to be them.

as for the topic: i think Lucas wanted to show that he was both good and wise as the movie wants us to believe. i actually found these 2 instances to be one of the sore spots of the movie.

thats just me. Hayden could never make that character seem wise and contemplating. By the way he delivered the line, its sounds like hes taunting Kenobi. so that could be it.

i dont know what Hayden is trying to portray 1/2 the time. im pretty much open to any answer

I think its Anakin's inner voice saying patience, and Anakin using it to appear more mature as to when he used to rush into things.

In the inside, he is a great person, but too headstrong is he.

These are both great answers to the question, thechozn1, but I think that the second is better because this is thematically consistent with the beginning of the film. This entire time, he does everything he can to save everyone, he wants to help the clone pilots, he helps obi-wan with the buzz droids (I won't leave you master) he protects him in the battle against Dooku, he carries him on his back unconscious even when palps tell him to leave him...etc, etc.
So this is just another moment where we see that at the beginning of this film, there is still a chance for him...(even though as viewers of the OT, we know what's going to happen to him, making it all the more tragic.)

Plus, this seems like something that Obi-Wan taught him, so you can see he is trying to follow obi-wan's teaching, at least at the beginning of the film.

I guess I lean towards answer (b) as well because of what you mention above. I think the jedi just pretty much screwed up in their approach to Anakin's training.

I think that he has matured. He's older, wiser, and he has more patience. He even told Dooku, that he's power has doubled. So its to show us that he has grown into a better Jedi than he was in AOTC.

And I think the way he destroys Dooku shows us this improvement and new-found maturity.

    I'd say (B).

But more than that, The good person in Anakin was despite the planted seeds of corruption for all of 13 years of his Jedi training. It's a good chance that Anakin spent the bulk of his time off consulting Palptine for advice on just about everything. Anakin's negative characteristics came primarily from Palpatine as a father figure. It's highly likely the Jedi did everything right in how they trained and taught him, but didn't forsee the invisible Sith Lord shaping Anakin's young mind for the future.

Yep, he learned a lot about the downside of impatience from the Dooku duel in AOTC.

Very true. Some maturity is noted from AOTC to ROTS. BUT, as the rest of ROTS plays out we see that Anakin makes some very immature and selfish decisions.

It's to show that despite what he just did, Anakin has started to act more like a model Jedi than the hothead he normally is. Same was Obi-wan's still reckless like when he jumped out of the Jedi Interceptor or leaping down to face ten thousand Battle Droids and Grievous.

It funny when you think of it; Anakin says "I say patience" then only minutes later he cuts off Dooku's head. "It's not the Jedi way"...
Confused young jedi :p Anakin spins in circles....

Wait, but Anakin says the I say patience line AFTER he cuts off Dooku's head.

And you guys think I'm joking? Beheading a man is a sure sign of maturity.

One thing I liked in the book was some of the extended dialog that showed more friendship and joking between Obi-Wan and Anakin. The book seems to make Anakin appear more mature in some places. Once off the Invisible Hand, Anakin's Descent into madness appears to go quickly. The book really shows more of what is going on inside his head, and how tired and confused he was by the time Palpatine revealed himself as the sith lord.
Because of this, I think that Anakin was indeed being wise and sincere when he said "Patience". Of course, I think he also wanted to get a crack at Grevious (In the book) because Palpatine told him that killing Grievous would end the war and make him THE hero.
