Say Vader makes it through his encounter with Obi-Wan on Mustafar intact and looking just as he did at the beginning of ROTS. No suit, mask, etc. Does he maintain a double identity like Palpatine? Or does he just become Darth Vader in public, leaving people to wonder why the famous Anakin Skywalker is going by this new sinister name?

Well, since the Sith is no longer in hiding, Anakin won't worry about concealing his identity. Anakin Skywalker is no more as far as he's (Vader's) concerned. He'll just have more people going: "I used to place my hopes in you, Skywalker!" to him before he does the Force Choke on them or dice them with his lightsaber to get them to realize that he's now Darth Vader.

Or perhaps he would probably use it as a disguise to lull his victims to a false sense of security (They think they're with their famous hero, remember?) before he unleashes his Sithness on them.

Well, Palpatine seemed comfortable with both names. Dooku also seemed to have no problem being referred to as both names. Maul had been raised a Sith and as far as I know, had no other name.

Vader, on the other hand used only the name Vader and became upset when the name Anakin was mentioned. I believe his situation is unique in that he uses the name to distance himself from his own memories and who he believed Anakin would become. As Anakin, he pictured a future with his wife and child. When he turned he killed not only his friends, but his wife and (at least he believed) his unborn child. His past was over and Anakin's future was no longer possible. To him, Anakin was dead. It made his sins easier to bare. He was now Darth Vader, who would bury his memories deep and forget the name of Anakin.

So he'd probably still go by Vader. Being trapped in his suit just made putting his past behind him easier.

If he survived Mustafar and killed Obiwan, he would have continued to go by Anakin Skywalker. He had no reason to reveal he was now a Sith Lord named Darth Vader. Him and Palpatine would go on a PR mission explaining that he was the sole Jedi to come foward with the plot of rebellion and was against it. Him bringing up the name Darth Vader wouldn't make any sense. Just as Palpatine told few that he was Darth Sidious. No one needs to know. Anakin could cash in on his credibility of a Jedi hero when he overthrew Palpatine and ruled the galaxy for himself. Keep in mind, if he survived Mustafar, Padme and the kids would still be with them, it was unclear on Mustafar how deceptive Anakin was going to be about becoming a Sith Lord with Padme.

I've figured Lord Vader would be his name amongst the Imperial military/government circles and he'd just use Skywalker as his public face. That seemed to be Palpatine's plan in the ROTS novel.

Thats probably true and this is exactly what Palpatine does, he is known as Darth Sidious only to a few people that he trusts and he eliminates them later to keep his identity a secret so that it wont be revealed by betrayals, The ROTS Visual Dictionary is also quite clear on the nature of the Sith Lords:always two there are, not just Master and Apprentice but also Public Persona and True Face, after he is Emperor Palptine has no need to reveal his Sith identity as he is now the beloved emperor palpatine who has restored peace to the galaxy.

Basically they contact people with their robes on and give them orders to keep their schemes going but in public they are dressed normally as regular people and act normally to a certain extent, like Dooku is a leader of the Separitist Movement and well intentioned and in private he is a Sith Lord that is bent on destroying the Republic and creating and Empire, the visual dictionary also says that Vader/Anakin wears his Robes with the hood drawn mainly for stealth to avoid being identified as Anakin so that he can keep his true self hidden until he kills the fool who hes attacking, Palpatine also shadows his face to keep himself from being identified as the Senator/Chancellor from Naboo when hes contacting his Separitist allies as Darth Sidious.

Yup,just like the temple massacre. The kids come out from their little non-concealing hiding spots because they think their hero has come to save them.

Plus in answer to this question, think of Dooku. He was a jedi master who openly became a sith, no cloak or anything, aside from adapting the name Tyranus. Still it's not like they wouldn't know who he is. I'm assuming Vader would take on a sith cloak like he uses in ROTS to conceal him and make him look darker.

"If Darth Vader is not disfigured...then what?"

Two simple little words for how the Galaxy would know him:
    Emperor Skywalker.

Totally. He'd be an emporer, not the best one, but he'd be one none the less. If Darth Vader never was chopped and fried, the OT would be alot different.

Who knows if Padme would have died if Anakin would have been there to comfort her in child birth? He also for sure would have killed Palpatine, thus becoming Emperor Skywalker.

She dies because he breaks her heart, in his insane quest for power. So, she was never to die in childbirth. Just because of his selfishness.

As the droid said, she is fine phyiscally. Padme dies because of Anakin's betrayal, not because of natural childbirth. Anakin just assumed the worst, because he could not see everything.

I don't think being predestined amounts to anything beyond a specific act. Doesn't make you God or anything-you're still a person with issues, and Anakin had alot of them.

Indeed. He would have ruled with a durasteel-fist. Due to his Jedi-heritage, I doubt he would have been as Sinister as Darth Sidious was. But IMO, his wickedness would have been somewhere in between Dooku's and Palpatine's. Padme was dead no matter what, and if Vader left Mustafar unscathed then I doubt the kids would have lived as he would not have gone to Pollis Massa. Thus, Vader would have had an even bigger chip on his shoulder had he been there and not been able to save her. I'd be willing to bet he would go after Sidious shortly thereafter. With Padme and the Jedi dead, there would be nothing to distract Vader from doin some seriously bad-bombin on old uncle Palpatine. IMO, a focussed and unspoiled Vader (ie. no suit) would have been nigh unstoppable.[face_thinking]

Emperor Skywalker? Quite an unrealistic scenario. If that was really his plan (as he explained to Padme),

Do you think the billions of people in the galaxy would allow it to happen if their (at least at this point) beloved leader Palpatine was slaughtered and this new evil guy took over his office?
Not to mention the millions of clones answered to Palpatine only. How did Anakin actually think to get away with this.
He was powerful but not nearly powerful enough to rule the galaxy as he wanted.

They answer to whoever the Galactic leader is at the time, not specifically Palpatine. He's the guy in charge, but clearly the Kaminoans probably wouldn't be like "hey clones, this Palpatine dude is gonna be in charge for ALL ETERNITY" :p

Anakin was loved throughout the galaxy as a hero. Plus he could easily take out Palpataine if he was never put into the suit, therefore he'd be able to take out anyone who opposes him. Plus the clones follow Sidious and obviously his apprentice is second in command {just like the OT, the Emporer is all powerful but Vader still commands} they'd fall into line behind Vader if they knew what was good for them.

    ^^^RIGHT^^^

Not to mention that "The Hero With No Fear" had fought on the frontlines with them. As Sith, they were not a part of Order 66, so the Clones would have followed him just like the 501st did when he led them on the assault of the Jedi Temple. Once he named himself Emperor, the troops were his to command... they were programmed to be loyal to the whoever led the Senate.

And in the novel, Anakin tells Padme that they'd wait for Palpatine to do all the nasty work and then when he's completely hated, Anakin would kill him.

Not a bad plan, really. :p

Even being the Chosen One, he cannot see everything. Anakin's problems is that he forgets the number one rule about visions of the future. They are always in motion. Nothing is certain. The actions taken today will shape the outcome of your future. Anakin let fear control him, rather than Anakin controlling his fear. Because he left fear guide his actions, he wound up suffering for it.

And yes, Anakin would go for being Emperor and he would use his reputation in the Clone Wars to gain the people's trust. In fact, he counted on Padme's reputation as a strong senator and former Queen of Naboo, to ensure his position. She had the experience in political matters and was well liked within the Senate. No one would question her, as far as he was concerned.

Vader would have become more powerful than Palpatine and would have become Emperor. But in the long run he would have still had to confront Yoda. Had Obi-Wan been the one killed I'm not sure if Luke and Leia would have been in hiding though. Vader would have raised Luke to be his apprentice maybe unless Yoda could prevent that from happening.

I think that the thought of a former Jedi Knight suddenly leading the Empire after killing the Elected ruler who was elected by the Galactic Senate to be Supreme Chancellor and later given emergency powers and was supported by something like 80 percent of the Senate when he declared himself Emperor of a new Empire isnt going to go over at all no way, first of all Anakin is a Warrior not a politican and hes arrogant and foolish and violent, hes never been a senator or politician and has no leadership qualities or experience to show that he would make a good ruler either, he commands the Clones/Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers and starfleet but they are totally obediant and take any orders without question, he cannot just barge into the Senate and start giving people orders left and right and jail and arrest everyone, he was already hated by the Senate in ANH because princess leia knows who vader is and what his reputation was and hes got to be fairly notorious throughout the empire as a ruthless leader.

I think half of the Senate would have been against him and Vader would have had to have them killed or jailed and that makes him look like a bad guy and pisses off a lot of other people too, they all know that this lunatic will go after anyone and rebel against him and maybe join the Rebel Alliance in droves in secret, Vaders violence if he was never suited up and became Emperor would have been very bad indeed and much worse than Palpatines was, he would be a tyrant and half of the galaxy would take up arms to fight him to avoid being oppressed by him, the Rebels would have been fighting from day one and a lot more people would be killed in the civil war that followed, he could use the fighting and war as an excuse to declare martial law and disband the imperial senate but that too would piss people off and get even more people against him because the dictatorship isnt hiding its oppression and brutality anymore at all and people would know whos the real enemy and its not the rebels but vader.

Vader would become so ruthless that he would do himself in because nobody would tolerate his oppression without resisting it or fighting back and killing everyone that opposes you will let everyone else and his brother know that the guy is really evil and corrupt and could come after them next, maybe just for farting in his office or not sending him a happy birthday card, but honestly killing and arresting everyone that doesnt agree with you doesnt make you very popular and people will complain about the lack of Human/Alien rights and when they get killed for it then that just looks bad on paper and makes you look like a major SOB, they have this probelm in China and North Korea as well, everyone hates the politicians and military there because of all the crackdowns and arrests and murders that take place all the time for no reason, eventually civil war will happen and both countries will be in total chaos, oppression does not work forever.
