the difference they'd have to have boy/girl wise in DNA would we an expressive barr body, meaning Lea could have the same genes + 1 extra contextually expressive set of genes from her mother, while Luke would have a single copy of that gene that would either be totally expressed, or totally inactive

besides, mark hamel was in a car accident between ANH and ESB, so Luke doesn't even look like Luke,
and no one said they were identical

Like I said the odds of it happening are like a Million to One but it can happen.

    No it can't.

They aren't identical anyway, so this whole thread is a little goofy.

First of all, you think they are identical and the biggest problem you have is that they aren't the same HEIGHT?? You'd think the fact they look nothing alike and are boy and girl would be the biggest issue. *shrugs*

    Short Biology lesson:

Identical twins result when one egg is fertilized and then split in two. Not only do the two children look alike but they HAVE to be the same sex. Basically it's the same person(biologically)duplicated.

Fraternal twins are the result of TWO eggs being fertilzed. Basically it's just two normal siblings who happen to share a womb at the same time. In this case there can be two sexes. Sometimes when they happen to both be boys or girls they can look alike but are not identical. Kind of like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. They obviously look alike but it's been noted that they are indeed fraternal twins. There are some sublte differences(And I'm not talking just due to hair coloring and anorexia).

It could be remotely possible for two 'identical' twins to be of different genders if they're the type of babies born with both genitalia and it's decided in the subsequent cosmetic operation to make one a 'boy' and one a 'girl'. Technically, however, they would be the same original gender.

But, under normal circumstances, it's silly to even use the term 'identical' if they're of different genders. As others have states, Luke and Leia are fraternal twins and therefore don't have to look any similar than any other siblings (heck, in theory you could have fraternal twins from two different fathers, now that I think about it).

Even if they WERE identical twins (both boys, for example), it would be quite possible for them to look different and be of different heights. DNA is a basic plan and influences tendencies, but living and development can alter how one turns out. Luke grew up in a somewhat harsh desert environment drinking plenty of blue milk and probably doing manual labor. Leia (or this hypthoethical identical male twin) would've grown up in a much softer aristocratic lifestyle. Take two identical twins and split them at birth. Have one grow up in the lap of luxury in Vermont eating a vegan diet all his life and throw another into the Midwest where people love their steak and milk. Let's even avoid taking into account various vices that can prematurely age and/or affect appearance. They WOULD look different (not dramatically so unless scarring is involved, but enough where they could pass as regular siblings rather than twins).

i dont know if someone already said this because i didnt feel like reading all the posts, but it is a biological impossibility for opposite sex twins to be identical.

No their not always the same gender. There have been boy/girl identical twins. Go look it up. The information is out there. Like I said the odds of it happening are like a Million to One but it can happen.

    Cite your source.

It is absolutely, positively, scientifically impossible for identical twins to have an XX/XY. The only way you can have identical twins of "different sex" is if one of them gets a sex change, but they'd still be biologically their original gender.

As others have said, they can't be identical since they're not the same gender.

And when were they refered to as "identical twins"? The movies? The EU?

Geez you guys, twins aren't always the same height. I happens. Often. It's not a scientific phenomenom. And with the cleft chin thing, I have a cleft chin, but neither of my parents really have one. But, my grandfather has one. So, maybe that trait skipped a generation or something.

How can some of you be so obtuse.
Identical twins of the opposite gender could not look
identical, the male can be taller which tends to be a male
trait [avg height of male taller than female] just the same
as the female has features males don't have such as breasts.
Why is this a difficult concept to grasp? Good grief.

Identical twins come from a single fertilized egg that has split. Same sex, and identical.

Fraternal twins are from two separate eggs that are fertilized at the same time. Same sex, or male and female, but not necessarily looking exactly alike. Sometimes they will look like they aren't even related.

Luke and Leia were fraternal twins.

    Yes, they could be fraternal.
If they are not and are identical they would not LOOK
identical anyway b/c they're opposite gender.

If they are male and female they could not be anything else BUT fraternal. Male and female are not identical. Identical means they would come from the same egg, thus they could not be of the opposite sex.

The EU never said that they were identical. I know that there might be a low opinion of the EU around here since this is a strictly OT board, but give people some credit! Even a 5 year old can tell you that identical twins have to be... well... Identical! And obviously you're not identical to someone if you have an entirely different set of reproductive parts.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this thread was meant to be a joke.

They have differenct characteristics because Mark Hammil and Carrie Fisher are not actually related, and in fact Mark Hammil is several years older. They are actors.
