People need to stop saying that Sidious COULDNT be killed, he COULD have been killed, it just never happens.

The prophecy is PREDICTING future events.....NOT stating that Anakin is the only one that can kill him.

Sidious could have been killed by Mace, Yoda, or even a runaway speeder...but it never happens that way, that's why the prophecy/PREDICTION turns out to be correct.

We know that the prophecy turned out to be correct because "eventually" Anakin/Vader does kill him, but BY NO MEANS does that say that somebody else couldnt have killed him.

There's a big difference in a prophecy saying what WILL happen and a prophecy ALLOWING something to happen....you guys keep talking like the prophecy "protects" Sidious or something.

He's human (even if he's an old one) and he can be killed.

I'd think that Anakin turning in his trusted friend as a Sith Lord was pretty much all the evidence the Jedi needed to go on.

Maybe Palpatine could have been tried for the murder of 3 jedi.

    Just to backtrack....

Mace and company were originally going to Sidious to tell him of the defeat of Grievous and that he should remove his emergency powers immediately. That is, until Anakin comes rushing into the hangar with news that Sidious is indeed the Sith Lord. Basically, this confirms Mace's suspicions about Palpatine being the Sith in the first place. Therefore, the merry trip of going to his office to make sure he gives up his power is thrown out the window and becomes a trip of arrest. When they ignite their lightsabers, they wern't intending on killing Sidious, it was just a way of saying, 'Don't mess with us' while we detain you. It's like cops arresting people, they are known to have weapons wielded when arresting. You also got to remember that the party knows he's a Sith Lord, so they aren't taking any chances. Anyway, fast forwarding, we get to the point where Mace knocks Sidious's lightsaber out of reach and this, IMO, is where he realizes he's too dangerous to be taken alive. He destroyed three powerful Jedi, crafted this well conceived plan for years, and is throwing Force Lightning at Mace. Therefore, Mace is struck with the grim conclusion, 'Gee, this guy is way too powerful and dangerous to be kept alive, I have no choice'. Then Anakin steps in and.....

Now, if the Jedi succeed in arresting him, I imagine he'd be under strict guard 24/7 and placed in that ray capsules thing seen in AotC. I imagine the Jedi would interrogate him, revealing his true self to the public and have the Senate elect a new Chancellor.

Mace couldn't kill him, though. According to the prophecy, only Anakin could do that

    I agree with r8hitman.

Where did the prophecy state that Anakin was the only one capable of killing Palpatine? What special power was required to pick up an old man from behind and throw him down a reactor shaft?

According to the prophecy, Anakin would destroy the Sith order when the Force was really unbalanced. Which is the situation in RotJ, when the last Jedi, Luke, is about to be killed.

During RotS, the Force is not yet unbalanced. Dooku has been killed, tons of Jedi are still alive. Why couldn't someone else kill Palpatine and prevent the Force getting unbalanced in the first place? The prophecy is a vision of the future by someone a long time ago. The future is always in motion.

Forever_Jedi, the balance of the Force is not a numerical balance of Jedi vs. Sith, or equality of good vs. evil. A "properly balanced" Force is a balance between the Unifying Force and the Living Force. Balance in this case means peace, justice, and equality for all. As the Sith reveal themselves to the Jedi and take their revenge, they are expanding a shadow over the Force putting the Force out of balance.

Basically, the Force is unbalanced as long as the Sith exist. During the reign of Palpatine, the Force is totally out of whack.

The prophecy doesnt have to be restricted to Sidious. There are many other variables that could present themselves in which Anakin could bring balance to the force.

For example, if anakin didnt turn, Sidious could've gotten a new apprentice. Now there are 2. Sidious can then do the apparently impossible: die. maybe he'll fall down a flight of stairs. Anakin can kill Sidious' new apprentice and there you go.

The point is that just because the future happened a certain way, doesnt mean it had to happen that way. Further, the same end can be reached by different means.

No, it has to do with killing Darth Sidious who brings the Force out of balance. Palpatine could be killed by anyone. Mace didn't get to kill him because Anakin choose to turn to the Dark Side at that moment. Anyone could've killed him. Anakin does because it was a prediction. It didn't mean for certain that only Anakin could do it, just that it would happen if he killed Palpatine and eliminated the Sith threat.

you say that because thats how it happened. Im contending that it couldve happened any possible way as long as Anakin killed the last Sith. It could be 20 years from now in ROTJ or it could've been 5 years from now against Darth Michael Jackson.

Anyway, there are a million possibilities in which both Sidious could die and Anakin could still bring balance

    EDIT: just to repeat:

the same end can be reached by different means

Sorry to make this my first post but I thought it incredibly funny for someone to reference South Park and then refer to others as half-wits. :)

If Anakin didn't turn, then Mace would've killed Sidious - it's that simple, really. Anakin still did his job, he exposed the disruption of the balance in the force and allowed the Jedi to do their jobs; it's just that he interfered right before Mace could finish it.

Seeing as how it's a "what if" topic I'll stay away from the idea that it never could have happened as so many seem desperate to point out every time they post wether it would be true or not.

The Jedi have kept the peace in the galaxy for a very long time, a thousand generations. Despite corruption growing in the Senate the Republic would probably trust the words of the Jedi on what has been going on.

I'm not sure how you imprison a Sith Lord, especially one of Palptine's power. Coruscant is a big place; there may be somewhere deep and far away from most of the population where he can be kept. It would be so tough though; there is nothing truly secure in this matter. Give Lector The Force and see what happens.

I would think that if there were a trial that at least Yoda or Mace or both would have to be present at all times that Palps is present. More than enough soldiers exist to overwhelm Palps. But really I think Jedi would need to be there is to counter any powers Palps tries to use during the trials.

Palpatine would still win in the end though even if captured and revealed. All he needs is a few channels open and say "Execute Order 66" and it spreads across the galaxy, maybe a bit slower, and they take over anyway.

If Mace could have killed him he should have without hesitation; that would have been the only way.

Mace would have definetly killed him had Anakin not interfered. I liked the Hannibal idea.

Palpatine was feigning weakness at that point. I'd agree that he genuinely lost the lightsaber duel, but from that point on he was putting on a show for Anakin. Considering that he went from "I'm too weak" to unleashing what seemed to be an even more intense burst of lightning in a less than a minute, and seeing all that he did against Yoda, I think he would have saved himself if Anakin had not interfered.

That's EU, I know, but maybe they could blind him to the force.
According to Kotor and other Star Wars sources this sort of punishment has been used before.(Ulic Quel-Droma etc...)

Seeing Palpatine disconnected from the force would be priceless [face_beatup]

    [hr]

Yeah, right. Mace would not have been able to finish it, that was the whole point. Palpatine manipulated everyone through the whole prequel trilogy, and this was just his way of pulling in Anakin. If Anakin had not interfered, Palpatine would have reacted. When he shocks Mace right out the window, he says "Power! Un-limited Power!" That kind of explains that he was acting when he had supposedly "run out" of his force lightning.

Palpi had Anakin totally believing that he was going to be assassinated, and that the Jedi were going to overthrow the Republic. Anakin swallows this idea whole, and just a few minutes before he was telling the other Jedi that Palpi is a Sith Lord. The only thing that changed Anakin's mind at the last second was 1.) Palpi's ability to make Anakin think Padme has no way at all to survive without him, and 2.) Making Anakin think he is a victim. When you watch the movie, and Palpi is saying "Help me" and "Please Don't" look at his face. He sounds fearful, but his eyes are really watching Anakin to see if his act is having much of an effect.

The only way the could have arrested him is if Anakin was a part of it, because Palpatine would have gone along with it, most likely so he could continue his manipulations.
