Firstly, I'd make the first mission one that RESOLVES the gaping plot hole from XWA that involves your uncle, Kessel, and being left for dead.

Secondly, I'd make it a game where you'd fly for the Empire in the classic trilogy setting. No vong for me, plzthx.

Thirdly, I'd make space battles on par with what we've seen in the movies. Massive amounts of fighters. No "painted on" star destroyers to make it look like there's more than 3 there along with a non "painted on" death star.

I'd make it so that the better you flew and more secret objectives you obtain, that secret missions would open up to you that average pilots would never see. Give something super special for the Emperor's Hand, Reach, Schlong, etc. to do!

Allow me to be a gunner on a star destroyer if I so chose. Would have to modify the canon a bit with some zoom features and some various other things probably (you know they have it with the way they so zelously attack you from 6 kms out).

Make it a great single-player storyline like TIE Fighter and XWA... possibly even better. XvT was a good idea, but the single player game was far more fun for me over the multiplayer (multiplayer X-Wing is too niche).

Sigh. None of this will ever happen. We're never going to see another classic trilogy simulator again. We might as well stop living in the past.

this thread makes me cry :(

starlancer was the last good space sim release //sigh

xwing alliance, xwing, tie fighter, xvt, wing commander 1-4(5 sucked refuse to accept it exists along with special ops),privateer, even privateer2 (underrated cause it was pretty complicated the flight system worked though). Freespace 1, 2.

Freelancer? wont happen for a long time :( if ever.

ah well.. good days long gone. //fires up xwa

I would take a lot of pointers from Freespace 2... perhaps one of the best-playing, and best-looking, space combat sims I've ever seen. You should be able to find it in bargain bins by now: giving it a spin should be no problem.

It would be cool to play an X-Wing game with XJ-X Wings,Chiss Clawcraft,E-Wings,Howlrunners,K-Wings basically all of the EU Starfighters, being able to use Shadow Bombs, and have two kinds of Lasers Stutter Fire lasers and regular lasers, and have the game set during the New Jedi Order period where you would have to defend the New Republic from the Yuuzhan Vong and the Peace Brigade and get to have dogfights with Corral Skippers and raids on Worldships and ships the size of a SSD like The Legacy of Torment.

Being able to fight the Yuuzhan Vong invaders at Helska,Ithor,Fondor,Obria-Skai,Duro,the shipwhomb at Sernpidal,Coruscant,Arkania,Black Bantha,Hapes,Borleis,Mon Calamari and other battles that have been shown throught the series would be awesome, especially if you win the early battles and the game followed a different path than the books do,or the other way around where if you failed your mission objectives or lost to many ships the yuuzhan vong win and you lose more territory.

Now that would be a pretty awesome game, but only for people that follow the NJO and appreciate its storylines.

That sounds cool, the ability to control your misslies (e.g. to make it dodge defensive laser fire and to hit a more accurate part of the ship faster than spending ages to locate a specific part to lock-on)

If I could improve XWA ...

... I would include more specific commands for wingmen, such as "dodge !" or "flee!" apart from the already known "engage !"

... I would include commands for wingmen to use specific weapons, like "only use your ion blasters !" or "weapons power to engines !" for better speed while dodging.

... I would include shield commands for wingmen like "all weapons power to the shields !"

Background : I often see how wingmen are acting ratther stupid in a way ... regarding their shield / weapons power management. They would often rather survive - like I do - if they put all weapons power into the shields at times when both their shields & hull are heavily damaged and low. Dodging and retreating while building the shields up often saves my life (in all X-Wing games and in TIE Fighter at times, too). After the shields are up, I can engage in combat again. I often do this. I clearly remember one battle where my hull was only 1 - 3 % or so, but I got victoriously back to my home base, because all shields had been up !
TIE Fighters are a different case, though. I've read that nothing is more deadly than a TIE Fighter veteran ... and I must admit this is true. Without shields at all, only the toughest survive.

The only problem would be how to implement these commands on the keyboard / joystick. At least a way to customize both should be given (like it is now).

    TIE Fighter: Empire

More or less a sequel to X-Wing Alliance...I'd like it set immediately after the Battle of Endor.

This time, you're from the Viraxo. Involve the Anton plot for the first bit, with a final clash between the Azameens and the Viraxo, in which Ace comes back for blood, kills his uncle, and destroys the main Viraxo base. With the Emperor's death, the Viraxo can't get away with their corrupt policies, and fall apart, being torn up by various other criminal organizations.

With your entire background more or less wiped out in the first chapter/tour of the game, the character would fall in with the Empire.

I think this would be a very interesting time to explore Imperial characters, with power struggles in the wake of the main Imperial leadership having been lost at Endor.

I'd like the character to join the 181st, flying with Fel and Stele from the original TIE Fighter.

It might be interesting to have the character leave the unit to command his/her own, however. Incorporating rpg elements in creating a roster of various pilots, planning missions, and struggling to get access to resources for the squadron as parts of the Empire seem like they're falling apart would be very interesting.

That's more plot-wise, though. Going with mechanics, most of what I'd've suggest have already been listed several times in the thread.

I know this has already been mentioned in part, but I would really love to really be able to fly an X-Wing instead of directing a moving bullseye, left, right, up and down. The only real movability is when slow down to make slower turns. It just looks so bad. If there could be controls to initiate snap-rolls, dives, snap-turns, etc. it would make me want to play longer and longer. Make it multiplayer and I would love it. Not the sort of Galaxies multiplayer, but the Galatic Battleground type where you can hook up with just friends.

Are you talking about the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games? You do actually fly a fighter in that.

Moving bullseyes sound more like the Rebel Assault games (I haven't played Rogue Squadron or Starfighter games, so I don't know about them.)

If there could be controls to initiate snap-rolls, dives, snap-turns, etc

I recall being able to make barrel-rolls by pressing the button on the top of the stick of joy*, and rolling left / right. A 'snap dive' can only be done by lowering shields and weapons power to engines and diving. (same with snap turns).

    SNAP.

*I loved the A-Wing for this. I'm thinking it was in Star Wars: X-Wing Can't recall about XWA but almost positive the same could be done.

Something like freelancer, but with more varieties in mission design (freelancer had just one... fly there destroy those etc).

You start as a smuggler or pirate and later have the possibility to join either the rebels or the empire.

A great setting would be after ROTS pre ANH, it could include ships from both time periods and could end with a reworked attack on the death star I (high end graphics etc)

They should make a huge galaxy with all planets from the films and many from the EU (all would be impossible, but the most prominent ones should be featured).

Please! Lucasarts please! If you guys consider to make such a game, give us performed cutscenes like in Jedi Knight and Rebel Assault 2. Put some actors in costumes and let us enjoy movie-like cutscenes which will make the story even more believeable.

    Jesus, so many possibilities.

    1) Revamp the physics. The way I'd do this would be to have a switch that turns maneuvering thrusters on or off. With them on, the ships would fly like they do in the previous X-wing games; with them off, the ships would fly realistically. This would allow for many different types of tactics.

    2) Revamp the displays. There should be an acceleration display in addition to the current speed, and actual braking thrusters to slow down.

    3) Updated ship specs; a properly sized Executor and Home One are the most prominent here. The Ex is 17.6 km long; accept it. Likewise, the homie is 3.8 km long, which actually makes its already wanting weapons complement suck even more. However, it's designed primarily as a carrier anyway.

    4) Updated graphics; at least Rogue Leader-level.

    5) Updated ship rosters; if we want to be all-inclusive, we need everything from the Chiss to the Yuuzhan Vong to the ships from KOTOR and prequel ships, all with correct stats. Oh, and for God's sake, put the Mediator and the Viscount in there, and give them some reasonable stats. The Mediator should be at least as big as the Home One but have like 200 guns or something, and the Viscount should be roughly comparable to the Executor. However, the Yuuzhan Vong, prequel ships, and KOTOR vessels aren't likely to make it in. To that end, the game should be easy to mod.

    6) More realistic weapons fire; ENERGY. MOVES. REALLY. REALLY. FAST. Turbolaser beams should only be visible as quick cylindrical flashes. Oh, and TLs, regardless of power, all pwn fighters in one hit. They're meant to rip through other capital starships and devastate ground targets, after all.

    7) Destructible asteroids.

    8) Realize localized shield failures.

    9) Better tactical commands; I want to be able to tell capital starships where to fire. Hell, I want to drive one.

Those petitions never work you know...I never played any Tie fighter or X-Wing games, but theyt sound cool. Implement everything alpha_red said and put two campaigns, Imperial and Rebel in and I'll be satisfied. And put it during the Galactic Civil War, the New Republic and NJO periods are so...bleh[face_sick]

Let's try and lower those 1:100 odds. Let's bring those games back.

If I remember correctly, the problem isn't that Lucasarts doesn't feel like making one. The X-Wing series was very popular and a good money maker for them. However, they can't make it on their own, as Totally Games owns half the rights to it. During X-Wing Alliance, there was a rift between the two companies...part of the reason the game was left unfinished in regards to the whole Azameen family plot at the end.

I'm pretty sure TG has stated they don't want to work with LA again on an X-Wing game for business reasons that came up during the production of the last game.

So LA knows the fans miss XW...but they couldn't do anything about it if they wanted to without TG.

    So no more X-Wing, ever.

So why don't they just buy back the rights? The profit they'd get from a new X-wing game would more than pay that back.

Unless LA just buys TG half of the rights.

    What I would include:
    1. Updated Graphics- damage models for fighters, and especially capital ships
    2. Proper scale- Starfighters and capital ships should be the correct scale. Freespace 2 does this well.
    3. Multiple campaigns- 6: Republic during the clone wars, Rebellion from pre ANH through Endor, Empire from pre ANH through Endor, New Republic from Endor through DE, Empire from Endor through DE, Privateer from ANH through DE
    4. Semi-dynamic missions- similar to FS2 with the optional missions and carryover missions. Alert missions at semi-random are also a good idea.
    5. Enhanced flight model- roll, pitch, yaw, bank. Let us play with the rudder and do reverse throttle hops
    6. Weapons load- get rid of the multi-purpose warhead launchers. X-wings, Y-wings, B-wings, E-wings have torpedoes, A-wings have missiles. K-wing can carry anything it feels like, but has no guns
    7. Capital ships- make them strong. The big turrets should kill a fighter in one or two hits. They should be impervious to fighter attack except in numbers (at least the capships bigger than corettes)
    8. Ship limit- bump it to about 200 per zone.
    9. Atmospheric missions- Don't. Flying in atmosphere is a lot different from flying in space. Don't bother putting the two together. Just focus on the other things.
    10. Wingman commands- More flexability. Copy FS2 format. Actually, try to get Volition to make this game for you. It would solve a lot of problems.
    11. Allow for a choice in squadrons, that you stay with. You pick what squadron you want to fly with during the campaign, which changes your objectives for the missions, and maybe opens up missions unique to that squadron. i.e. you join a K-Wing squadron, you are assigned a bomber role in a mission, but if you join an E-wing squadron, you have an escort role in that same mission. Allow for transfers between squadron mid-campaign.
    12. Squadron markings- have distinct markings for different squadrons. At least something like a patch for your flightsuit.

Buy back the rights? What "rights"? LucasArts can do what they like with teh Star Wars property.

Best case scenario, LucasArts commisions Totally Games to make the x-wing series. For a future game, LucasArts again commisions Totally Games to make the sequel.

    In a recent email exchange I had with Totally Games, I got this reply;

Just a quick update. We won't be showing a new game at E3. The project we're wrapping up is online. I'll put Larry in the loop on this email and hopefully he can add some info. Ours is not really an alumni company, we did products for LucasArts since the late 1980's and have done work for others.

More Xwing series could be nice, eh? A week doesn't pass that we get a plea or request for that. Maybe someday!
