I go with Coop saved Laura but totally broke reality so Laura's holler is something like her old life and death and new life is all crashing together in her at once, so its a lot.

I would go for a rewatch but Paramount Plus right now only has The Return and no s1-2 which is quite irritating

That’s such a bizarre decision on the licensing but typical of the myriad ways the current streaming landscape is more ****ed up than anything David Lynch could concoct, I guess. Luckily I own all three seasons on Blu-ray and didn’t have to navigate that morass.

Is Tremond important? I guess I missed something on this latest rewatch. I just assumed alt uni.

Depends on your feelings vis a vis creamed corn, I suppose.

She seems to be omnipresent in The Return, to me, as I personally believe she’s also the 119 woman and the old lady whose relative is vomiting in the car.

Incidentally I find this bothersome about the way lots of people discuss Mulholland Drive. The popular notion that the first 2/3 are a dream, the rest is reality, bores me.

But yeah. Lynch knocked the ending to Twin Peaks out of the park.

I agree, actually. I do think it’s a valid reading - I did just use it as a shorthand :p - but oftentimes it becomes a bit of a straight-jacket, i.e. “Mulholland Drive has to be this way” as if there’s only one valid reading, which is ridiculous. There’s no obvious reason to assume the first part of the film is less real than the second part of the film, other than the second part is bleaker in a superficially more grounded way. These days I think that ambiguity was the goal, but I think Twin Peaks does that same idea better.

Mark Frost's 2nd Twin Peaks companion book makes it clear that Cooper does save Laura - the Blue Rose taskforce discover that time has altered, with the original timeline's events fading away. Laura Palmer was reported missing, instead of being found dead; Leland Palmer kills himself exactly one year later. Sarah Palmer (with all that implies), is still alive.
The Tremonds/Chalfants were conspicuous in their absence during The Return, until the very end. The point is made that the grandson is training to be a "Master Magician". They appear to be unlike some of the other beings - like BOB, or The Arm, The Giant and so forth. Back in the original series I got the impression that they were from 'another world', reached through the Lodges. My theory is that the place where Laura, Cooper, and Diane end up is their world. There's something about passing through and having an identity tied to someone in the other world, which is what I suspect happened to the three. The 'mundaneness' of their world is simply an interpretation.
(just some stream of consciousness rambling before I go out to eat)

I certainly agree that Laura is correctly reported missing, rather than murdered. :p I think it's not clear that Cooper saves Laura, or that Laura can even be saved. I think you can also read the last scene as an explicit refutation of that idea by Lynch. In that interpretation, I would argue that the sheer horror of what happened to Laura Palmer - even without her murder we're talking about years of sexual and psychological abuse - is not something anyone can save her from, and eventually the sight of the house unlocks all of that trauma.

I think the superficial mundaneness is also part of the trap, though (perhaps precisely the danger of the Tremonds' realm in your reading) - the viewer and the characters get lulled into a suspicion that maybe, maybe everything they remember about Twin Peaks was all just a dream. There have been hints:

and for us as viewers we're ultimately watching the finale of a series that was a direct response to like, Dallas and that kind of thing, David Lynch likes dreams, it could be happening... and then right at the end the fantastical insists upon itself.

Of course I'm sad that he passed (78 is hardly "advanced-age" nowadays), but I do draw consolation from the fact that he lived long enough to craft The Return, which I consider his crowning achievement.

Thank you so much, David, for passing to us your dreams and nightmares.

This has made me pretty damn sad today. Knew it had to come eventually though.

I know Kyle is pretty torn up right now from what I've read. He's said that he doesn't even need a script from David he would just say yes especially if it was more Cooper in the future.

    Is Frost's TP books good?

Is Eraserhead on any of the streaming services? I haven't yet found it on my searches.

The only Lynch movie I saw in theaters was Inland Empire, it was a small art house screen in Pasadena, I think. What I still remember to this day was the uncomfortable feeling of cognizantly sitting in a theater but still feeling immersed, like one of the exits might lead into the dark liminal spaces onscreen. Walkways behind stages, hallways in motels, and the screen itself that was a portal. He popularized surrealism like no other, a master of the craft. Who can imagine if he’d been drafted to direct Return of the Jedi as I’ve heard was in talks. RIP @};-

I'm 47 minutes 4 seconds into Eraserhead. Definitely feels like it's connected to the Black Lodge.

Love the humor in it so far.

So, while it went off on it's own thing and both are very different, is the X-Files a rip off of Twin Peaks? I mean kinda like Star Wars is a rip off of Dune where not really but the component pieces are there.
