Orpheus and Eurydice by IrenHorrors

"Orpheus was a musician, poet in Greek mythology. Orpheus and Eurydice get married, but later that night, Eurydice is bit by a snake and dies. Overcome with grief, Orpheus travels to the Underworld to bring her back to life. He convinces Hades and Persephone to let Eurydice go, but her release comes with a catch: Eurydice must walk behind him as they ascend to the upper world, and Orpheus is forbidden from looking at her.
Unfortunately, Orpheus is overcome with passion just as they reach the exit. He turns to look at Eurydice and she is immediately sent back to the Underworld – forever. Orpheus is devastated and roams around Greece playing sad songs. During the end of his life, he worshiped no gods except the sun. One day, he went to pay tribute to the sun near the oracle of Dionysus, where he was caught by the Maenads, and was killed for being an infidel to the god Dionysus (patron of the arts)"

Holy Roman Axe Breaker by LordGood

I've seen this guy around on an engraving but I cant quite pin down the source material. But hey I'm all for scale gorgets.
From the looks of things he seems to be the first Holy Roman Empire's answer to the problem of crazy axe murderers. The scale gorget, the pointed helmet with coverage down the neck and reinforced shield seem to be purpose designed to shut down a wily Lombard with a big axe.

I'd like to find the primary source that served as inspiration for the original engraving, if anyone's knowledgeable in that field. I'd appreciate more reference for the Carolingian era.

Its a bit neat to rediscover the 'dark ages' Not the mud, huts and vikings of HBO or the history channels foggy smoky raids,
but enormous, tired, and failing empires with their jaws locked around each others throats as their executioners rise from the sand, snow, and steppe
