Denizens of the great forest of Verdissia on Clarion, the Spattercops have spider-like heads and ape-like bodies. Known mainly for their skills in archery, hunting, and their textile exports, the Spattercops have always been a minor player on Clarion's world-stage. However, their military defense tactics and flexible command structure proved a vital component in the guerrilla war resistance against the expansion of Rabazar the Ruthless. Males and females of the species are virtually indistinguishable to other races, and they don't have a gendered social structure.

These creatures were inspired by the Treemen of Arboria from the Flash Gordon franchise. The Treemen are just human beings who dress like Robin Hood, but I wanted to take the basic idea of a good-guy forest people and make them humanoid spiders. Spiders get a bad rap. The name comes from attercop, an old British word for spider (that can still be seen in the word cobweb, and was a favourite of J.R.R. Tolkien's). They were also visually-inspired by the Ettercaps from Dungeons and Dragons.

Somebody asked about Counter-Earth animals, and it's true I've been mostly focusing on the sapient races. So, here's an animal.

The Wolfsteeds are large domesticated canids with somewhat horse-like leg configurations. They're used as mounts by many races in the temperate climates on Clarion.

Not really based on anything in particular. I just liked the idea of Wargs with a more horse-like body structure while still maintaining wolf features.

Unlike on Earth, where the Alicorn is the mule-like sterile offspring of a Unicorn and a Pegasus, the Alicorns on Clarion are a species in their own right. They are built on a different body plan than the Earth Pegasus, having only four limbs instead of six. Their stance while walking is similar to an eagle, with the body projected forward and the wings tucked against the body. The Clarion Alicorn is also bioluminescent, with a subtle glow at night. By day, they are generally plain white with some faint rainbow colouring in places.

Despite being horse-like, this species is rarely used as a mount as they are extremely aggressive and nearly impossible to tame. Those riders capable of breaking them in are considered especially gifted and are looked upon with awe in some cultures.

I wanted to see how far into strange directions I could take the design while still being recognizable. I've seen the four-limbed design a few times, but it seems to be rare, so I went with it. The horn was inspired by the head crest of the Nyctosaurus. The bioluminescence was inspired by the recent discovery that birds like owls have a glow when put under blacklight, for reasons that scientists still aren't clear on. I also took some colouring inspiration from the work of artist Lisa Frank.

A race living in the equatorial swamps of Clarion, the people known as the Boglights produce a chemical from their skins that combines with the local swamp gas to create a constant fiery effect. Despite appearances, the "fire" produces no extra heat. They come in a variety of colours, depending on family grouping.

The Boglights are technological Luddites and live in small, self-contained communities, so they have been largely ignored by their more warlike neighbours the Amphibimen.

These guys aren't really based on anything. They're actually a very old idea I had, probably inspired by the fires in the swamp scene from the Princess Bride movie. The basic design and the idea that the "fire" they produce is just harmless gas also goes back a few years. I've been meaning to find a place for them, and Counter-Earth seemed like it.

An animal native to the Pterrod Desert on Clarion. Despite its superficial resemblance to the Tyrannosaurus Rex of Earth, the Barnosaurus is a herbivore that feeds on the cacti and shrubs of the desert. They are extremely friendly.

In the 1980s, the evil warlord Carkyss of Ezkeel, as part of a scheme to destabilize the nations of Clarion, took some samples of the animals known as Fuzbullos from the forest-moon of Ulbar and magically mutated them into nasty, chaotic, highly destructive, and rapidly self-reproducing creatures known as the Groblins.

Haven't done a Counter-Earth entry in a long while, so I thought I'd whip one up.

The Shark-Folk are a mostly peaceful race of intelligent shark-like humanoids who organize themselves into small nomadic tribes moving throughout the tropical regions of Clarion's oceans. They need salt water to survive, but can go out on dry land for about a day or so. Their species isn't sexually dimorphic, and can even naturally change genitalia throughout their life cycles (real sharks also do this, apparently, with males becoming female after growing to a certain size).

Unlike most Counter-Earth things, these aren't specially based on any one pop-culture property. Humanoid sharks are fairly common - Street Sharks, King Shark, etc. Their costumes and aesthetics are based on that of Hawaiian culture.
