In honor of the recently released Skin Game, here's the latest set featuring the Denarians! Been a while since I've done one of these. Nothing like reading the latest book to get yourself hyped up for the series again.
The Order of the Blackened Denarius (or the Nickelheads as Harry likes to call them) is an organization of men and women in possession of thirty ancient silver coins, said to be the same ones Judas was paid with for betraying Jesus. Each Denarius coin houses a Fallen angel, which seeks to bond or control whoever possesses their coin. They are led by Nicodemus Archleone, host to the Fallen angel Anduriel, and the oldest and most powerful of them. His daughter is Deirdre, whose demonform uses her prehensile bladed hair for weapons. His wife and rival is Polonius Lartessa (Tessa), host to Imariel, who takes the form of a demonic mantis creature. Thorned Namshiel is a Denarian with considerable skill in sorcery.

Southland Brown, space smuggler, is an original character heavily inspired by the Northwest Smith character created by C.L. Moore. He'll have a small part in the Mars storyline, which will follow the Paris one. My conception of him is that the Eldritch Abominations he's encountered throughout his career have compounded to give him severe PTSD which he suppresses with the Martian drug Mnemoka.

Northwest Smith was of course a precursor to Han Solo and similar characters that would come later, so my design for this guy is based on a young Harrison Ford (but thinner and more scarred and weathered from hard living).

The novel The Angel of the Revolution is about a vaguely Socialist organization called The Terror getting a hold of airships and conquering the world in the early years of the 20th century during a time of global strife, with their main enemies being the Russian crown. The sequel, "Olga Romanoff, Syren of the Skies" is about the last surviving heir of the Russian monarchy taking revenge on the new world leaders after a hundred years of peace.

Obviously, the overall plot of the books isn't compatible with the Apex Society Universe, though I've used aspects of them (The Terror, and their African nation-state Aeria have featured in the current story). The Olga character, a devious villain protagonist, is too interesting a character to pass up using, even if her story doesn't line up.

So this is sort of an AU version of that character, transplanted into the 1930s, with her family having been destroyed by the October Revolution instead of The Terror. This makes her an evil version of the Anastasia legend (the idea that Anastasia survived the massacre and later turned up), particularly the Don Bluth movie based on it. I'm calling her Olga Romanov to distinguish her from the book version. This one will also have red hair instead of dark, again, as a reference to the Bluth film.

A design for Filibus, as she will appear in a future Apex Society story.

Filibus was a 1915 Italian silent film about an airship captain/master burglar named Filibus, who is actually the Baroness Troixmond. She uses her female identity to toy with the authorities, her male identity as Filibus to steal, and her other male identity as the Count de la Brive to seduce women. Reminder that this movie was made in 1915.

For the design, I aged her up to reflect the roughly 20 years passed between the film and the timeline in the Apex Universe. The Filibus costume has undergone a complete overhaul. The original was a black cloth jacket, a black domino mask and a newsboy cap. I altered it to a leather number to play up the aviator angle a little more, and the more layers would probably hide her gender a little better. Her airship will also be updated, but I haven't gotten to that yet.

Agent Tom Shade, an Apex Society character who hasn't shown up since way back in Issue #2, will be making another appearance fairly soon. I imagined the character as a Dick Tracy-type, with a little bit of Will Eisner's The Spirit - though grouchier than either. For this design update, I based some of his facial features on actor Michael Shannon, who I imagine him sounding like as well.

His suit is black, with a bright blue hat and trench coat. He has a government issue communicator watch with some extra gadgets built in.

Drawing the first half of the current issue made me realize that the outfits I designed for the ladies wouldn't really be functional in the more actioned-oriented second half, so I whipped up some new designs for them to change into later based on 1930s women's pantsuits.

Designs for Alan Augustine and Grant Magus, rival sorcerers in the Apex Society Universe.

EDIT: Since a lot of people missed it, these guys are based on comic book writers/occultists Alan Moore and Grant Morrison (though I wanted them to look recognizable without actually being portraits of either).

I've been asked about whether or not there's an Apex Society version of the Joker. Old Nick (top) is a sadistic cult leader who's cross between the Bronze Age Joker and Charles Manson. Son of Nick (bottom) is a modern gang leader who's more than a little bit of a tryhard edgelord fanboy.

Carrie Mae Doherty - AKA Devil-Mae Carrie - A Harley Quinn type character for Old Nick/Son of Nick (www.deviantart.com/spearhafoc/…) in the Apex Society Universe. I don't have a full backstory and stuff worked out yet, but I felt like doing some design work for her.

    https://www.deviantart.com/spearhafoc/art/Counter-Earth-Rabajaqs-855762875
    [IMG]
The Rabajaqs are a rabbit-like species that developed in parallel evolution with the Stickhares of Earth (www.deviantart.com/spearhafoc/…) in Clarion's great forest of Verdissia, where they shared a home peacefully with the Spattercops (www.deviantart.com/spearhafoc/…). However, their culture was always religiously focused on space and they longed for the stars. At long last, after acquiring enough technology from the Darrans (www.deviantart.com/spearhafoc/…), they managed to reverse-engineer rockets capable of escaping Clarion's gravitational pull. They've since established themselves in orbiting satellites around Counter-Earth, where they usually act as traders and merchants for their neighbouring races.

These guys are based on the bizarre trend in media for a while of green space rabbits, including Bucky O'Hare, Jaxxon from the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and the video game Jazz Jackrabbit. They usually wore red too. No idea what was up with that whole thing.

In the 1950s, mad roboticist Dr. Emmet Tytarnian created a robotic version of America's premier superhero Sol Invictus in attempt to destroy him. Instead of the battle the Doctor was expecting, Sol Invictus used his super-speed to reprogram the machine to act more like Sol Invictus. In the long run, this proved problematic since the robot began mimicking Sol superficially while ignoring the spirit of superheroism. It was eventually relocated to another star system to put the people of Earth out of harm's way of the robot's misguided rescue attempts (which often involved creating the danger in the first place). Robo Sol Invictus proceeded to build its own Robo World, being a twisted robotic version of Earth populated with machine people it could "save" without consequence.

Inspired by Bizarro from Superman Comics, particularly the Silver Age version of the character.

I've been looking for a while for a good stand in for the Green Lantern Corps concept (and by extension, the Lensmen novel series, of which the Silver Age Green Lantern reboot was primarily based) for the Apex Society Universe. The idea of a space police force with all the members having the same superpowers is an interesting one. I was thinking back on my Occult Heroes series, and realized I could expand the "Lightworker" concept to fill that role, with her being one of a legacy. Her disco ball-inspired costume also provided a jumping off point for the uniforms, which I'm thinking are Vril-collecting panels.

Basically, these are a division of Ashtar Command under the Pleiadean Alliance that use "Vril Batons" as their weapons.

Although they fill that Green Lantern Corps niche in the Universe, I don't intend to treat these guys as particularly heroic. Not to be too controversial here (too late) but police forces around the world have a...shady history...and present. The Lightworker Force would reflect that.

    JessiBeans: Guinevere

    https://www.deviantart.com/jessibeans/art/Guinevere-60094990
    [IMG]

Guinevere -- derived from the Welsh-Gaelic for "white fairy" or "white ghost", King Arthur's queen consort from the Arthurian Legend, lover of Lancelot and later forced into a convent.

I've always thought Guinevere got the worst end of all the nonsense in the Arthurian legends. She was such a wonderful, independent woman, a Queen of the Summer Country in her own right and then men come along and kidnap her and claim her and all manner of other nonsense. And why is it so awful that she had an affair with Lancelot (who was dashing and lovely anyway)? Do you know who Arthur had an affair with? His sister. So there.

To me she seemed more the elusive white fairy, something more tied to nature and the etherial, trapped for the time being, but ultimately untamable and timeless.

King Sigurd Frode Hillevy's armies were many and varied in both equipment and competence. However let it be known that they were among the first to fully experience the new kind of warfare employed by the Shirudo that would later see nearly a quarter of the world be engulfed in flame.

    1st row, left to right:

Ghost Companies- These smaller formations are more tactically flexible than entire divisions of Elite Guard. Often Ghost companies are deployed beyond enemy lines and are tasked with disrupting enemy logistics. the pic features a member of Branwen's Ghosts. There's some good info here:
    www.deviantart.com/ravajava/ar…

Elite Militia- Units drawn possibly from their provincial units and formed into a better fighting force. The pic shows Archer, one of the earliest notable characters in the Great War.

Line Infantry ( new Army ), haha proper explanation below. These guys came around later.

Elite Guards- At the start of the war, these units were among the mightiest of King Hillevy's military. These hardy men and women would later go on to fight motorised shirudan divisions and endure bombardment from the Sky Fleet. Not many will return to their homes.

    2nd row, left to right:

Provincial Militias/House Militias- Lesser nobles in the Kingdom of Karelia are given the ability to muster their own military forces to uphold law and order or assist in the Crown's military campaigns. These formations lack heavy equipment but they have the heart and gumption to fight for their King and country. Featured here is the soldiers of House Ostergaard. find some more info on them here:
    www.deviantart.com/kingwillham…

Vulnaud- The Karelian Crown's equivalent to the stallion Air Marines of Arcea. These soldiers are harsh and straightforward. If the Air Marines are like an elegant blade, the Vulnaud are blunt maces that cave skulls inward.

New Army Unit- Modernised and with better training than the various militias the Karelian New Army is a glowing example of military might in the world of Unos Solum in the later years of the Great War. It is said that these units could have won the war alone.

    Airfortress lore

    ---------
As I write this I realised that there is a severe lack of art for karelian airships and vehicles. might get around to fixing that. I kinda wanted to write like an in-setting history guy but sometimes i want to justwrite what's on my mind.

BAIYUE (THE HUNDRED YUE), CHINA’S SOUTHERN BARBARIANS

Yue or Baiyue is the name by which the Han Chinese knew the tribes living in what is now southern China and the jungles of Southeast Asia. This was an umbrella term including many peoples with common traits as well as differences (something like the nomads of the steppes), and their ethno-linguistic diversity is still a matter of debate, although there is some consensus that at least part of them were Austronesian peoples. The northernmost Yue ended up assimilated into Han Chinese culture and their territory became today’s southern China, but the rest of the Yue evolved into the Vietnamese, the Thai, and the Khmers, among others, eventually adopting Hinduism and Buddhism and becoming Indianized. The Yue are also believed to have a common ancestry with insular Austronesians, and that means being related with Polynesian peoples such as the natives of Hawaii, the Maori of New Zealand or the Rapa Nui of Easter Island. In modern-day southern China, there was a Yue kingdom called Nanyue, ruled by a dynasty of Chinese descent and considerably more sinicised than any other Yue. Chinese influence in Nanyue began as soon as the Qin dynasty, the dynasty of China’s first emperor, so, by the time emperor Wu of Han (Wudi) conquered Nanyue, this was very much a mix of barbarian and Chinese cultures. Emperor Wu, famous for his Siberian campaign against the Xiongnu, the War of the Heavenly Horses against the Dayuan, and for having sent the envoy Zhang Qian to Hellenistic Bactria, also annexed Nanyue to the Han Empire. The tribes further south, the Hundred Yue or Baiyue, would be much more primal than the half Chinese / half barbarian Nanyue. The Chinese described the Yue in their original form as being completely tattooed, having their hair either short or untied (opposite to the Chinese who wore it in a bun), blackening their teeth, worshipping animal totems, practicing cannibalism, wearing clothes and armours made of plant fibres, and living in huts. The Yue were also described as skilled seafarers and sword-makers, knowing both bronze and iron metallurgy.

This was my entry for RJ Palmer’s contest ‘Pokemonster Hunter’ from last August. The contest: to redesign a Pokemon to be a large monster in the video game Monster Hunter. I chose Tyrantrum because I only have a few days to submit and Tyrantrum was easy to translate to a something that will fit in the Monster Hunter universe.
Since Tyrantrum was pretty obvious choice, I had to make up with the presentation - I’ve always been a fond of the little capcom figurines so maybe I’ll present my entry as a toy/miniature - It worked well since I didn’t have time to work on finer details. This was fun exercise.

Sculpted and Painted in ZBrush, rendered in Photoshop and Keyshot.
