This is a megafaunal insect descended from the green darner, hundreds of millions of years hence on an unnamed seed planet setting where this was the only introduced insect. Initially surviving by hunting aquatic invertebrates as larvae and cannibalizing one another as adults, over time the dragonflies on this planet diversified wildly... first filling all manner of conventional arthropod niches and later much more novel ones.

This "deer" is a species whose ancestors' larvae gradually adopted the same habits as the adults and so lost their distinct life stages. They became herbivorous and terrestrial throughout their entire life, growing larger and bulkier bodies to support big digestive systems to handle their diet of leaves, which they cropped off vegetation with stout, sharp horizontally-oriented mandibles hidden within an extended bird-like bill sheath derived from the labrum and maxillae of their ancestors.

As they grew larger, these dragonflies ossified connective tendon tissues in their limbs into an internal skeletal system, rendering their exoskeleton unnecessary for structural support and letting them finally obtain vertebrate sizes. The legs elongated, letting it reach higher browse, while the exoskeleton persisted as a thinner, protective skin. As they grew lankier and heavier they evolved to molt it piece by piece, one leg at a time, rather than all at once.

The "deer" is finally notable for the derivation of its former wings. The hindmost pair has degraded to little more than a funnel, its structure twisted and deformed, with a hollow opening beneath; it has evolved into an ear, amplifying sound into a cavity in the thorax and letting the creature hear its surroundings. The first pair meanwhile has evolved into a weaponized structure; a mobile pair of large antlers that males whack one another with to fight over females, and with which females defend themselves and their young. The antler is formed from the veins of the ancient wing, which have become large and durable, with only the smallest amount of membrane tissue remaining between the tines to show it ever was a wing to begin with. Though modern dragonflies only grow one set of wings at the last stage of their lives, this creature has lost its terminal molt and so grows continuously throughout life; the antlers develop early in life and are discarded entirely with each molt, growing back afterward. A new set inflate quickly with lymph after being dropped from the wing buds under the exoskeleton, taking several hours to stiffen and then several days to fully harden with stored minerals. Young ones' antlers are softer and less dangerous, as they molt more frequently and cannot afford to mineralize them as well, but adults - which molt once every few years - develop hardened, calicified antlers that are very formidable weapons.

Only breeding males adopt the pictured color scheme, with females being subtle and camouflaged to hide from predators.

A look back in time, this scene was commissioned by someone who wanted to see the earlier Serina epochs fleshed out. Without many predators, animals of all sorts have grown enormous in Serina's warm shallow seas, as 6 foot long giant livebearer fishes descended from the platy and swordtail graze on meadows of marine algae alongside man-sized sea slugs, colorful giant crayfish, and one of Serina's early predator fishes - a barricuda-like ambush-hunting swordtail that lurks beneath floating algae.


I do accept commissions to show aspects of Serina I overlooked, but this is the first I have ever gotten! It was nice to take a look back when things were much simpler on the world of birds... some 270 something million years ago, by now!

Another commissioned early Serinan species!

The Opaline Swordshark is an early predatory fish from Serina's Tempuscene era, 25 million years PE. Descended from swordtails, these fish are now fast oceanic predators that cooperate to trap smaller fish in baitballs, which the group then stuns with repeated swipes of their highly elongated tail swords, present in both sexes.

Swordsharks have a placental connection to their developing young and give birth to a few large offspring instead of many small ones, giving their young a better chance of survival.

Swordsharks like this with tail swords went extinct at the end of the Cryocene; swordless species, which diversified in the Thermocene and grew much larger, were known as swordwhales. Unfortunately no relatives of these groups survived the end of the Thermocene, and today this clade is extinct on Serina.

The African flower beetle, Mecynorrhina torquata ugandensis, is a very beautiful beetle that is not especially common, but very desirable in the bugkeeping hobby for the remarkably bright and varied colours of the adults. I couldn't find much information on this species habits in nature, but in captivity larvae are easily reared on dried leaf litter and rotting wood and adults feed well on bananas. Done on commission.

More older species, this time from the Thermocene.

Living in the deepest and coolest waters of Serina's northern polar waters 100 million years hence is one of the strangest of the large swordwhales, a creature so strange and divergent from its relatives that its ancestry is all but obscured entirely. Fourteen feet in length and 3,000 pounds, the strange - and very spiky - lumphead grumpus is certainly a sight to behold.

Its giant spines swivel and are used for defense from gigantic predator fishes.

Another old species concept, this time for the Thermocene.

The apex predator of the Thermocene sea is a pelagic swordwhale known as Gigadon oculopter. Growing to upwards of 25 feet in length and weighing more than five thousand pounds this highly streamlined fish sports a large and extraordinarily powerful jaw adapted not to extend and snare smaller prey but to grip and to tear flesh from the bodies of other, sometimes even larger fishes.

Gigadon was the largest predator of the ocean during the Thermocene, 100 million years hence, and was an intelligent social predator in an epoch where Serina had no large aquatic birds.

Some scifi stuff !

The Irides Space Vector (ISV) is a space transport equipped with hyperdrive engine for long travels. The ISV is produced in many variants from tourist purpose, private yacht, cargo trader and military monitor. The space vessel is an assembly production of Magnam Corporation, also the project is produced in joint ventures with other companies among the galaxy.

The Cargo ISV hosts a cargo hold under the main bridge. In relation with the bigger space cargos this ISV can hold fewer containers but it is faster, the tetra-engines allows sudden sprints to avoid pirates' raids. Some vessels are equipped with weaponry, usually the crew prefers small calibers (for the few maintenance they required), but other Cargo ISV are equipped with light laser artillery. These cannons are deadly for other space ships of the same size ( and furthermore bigger ones can be scared), but often they are used to create a way among the asteroids fields. The Monitor ISV instead of the cargo hold has a energy cell for the cannons.

The small size and the mass production of the ISV make the vessel a good choice for small merchants and small corporation.

Another stuff of this kind. A civilian vehicle converted for military purpose. This bulky spacecraft is designed for moving in large and dense asteroid fields so it's very thick and able to support heavy fire. However its weak point is the low maneuverability and the slow speed.

this one is made exclusively for military purpose, so not a conversion from civilian vessels.
The ship can host many ammunition depots along the hull, so has few space for fighters/shuttles and troops.

(this one is pretty inspired by Mon Calamari spaceship )

This ship could be easily classified as medium cruiser for the carrying capacity, the heavy and light artillery batteries (I wrote destroyer but yes, it's definitely a cruiser). The ship can unleash a massive barrage and have a decent speed to reach and leave the fight in few time. The common use of the ship during the defense is in vertical position, assembling a shield shape, so it can shoot with all weapons on a target.

Here the usually survey for my Master's Degree thesis...I'll be pretty annoying in the next days about this, sorry (do it and share it)

Dudes...I love this design and so I'm pretty deceived and I think it has not huge weak points... I add also light artillery for anti-fighters/bombers in the rear, above the engines. Obviously, I noticed the Heavy Railgun Battery Command Deck block the fire range of the inner turret for a broadside bombardment.

So maybe a weak point could be the communication antennas pretty exposed...
