For 6 months the Zameeni 10th and its attached support units kept the forces of the dark mechanicum and the denizens of Choralum at bay. While regarded as a sterling display of zameeni fighting prowess the battle nonetheless cost the zameenis dearly. Upon the arrival of imperial reinforcements, only 4000 out of the original 10,000 soldiers remained.

In Alchemax high security prison/secret lab-

"Why do we need so many precautions for a little girl?" Said the new guard as he stared at the multiple cameras of the security room.

The screen he was most curious about showed a thin teenage girl with long red hair. She was huddled in the corner of the shatter-proof glass box that surrounded her cell. A cell that also happened to be in another, larger room. Held by a heavy metal door and two guards on the outside. She seemed to be giggling and murmuring to herself, so carefree and playful despite the high tech straitjacket restricting her movements.

"Oh, you don't know?" The older guard said. "That 'little girl' is a notorious serial killer. She's murdered 12 people, including her parents and has maimed a few of the staff here. The last guy in your position had a finger bitten off and spat back out at him when he got too close when giving her breakfast."

The new guard gulped, regretting his career choice more and more. A notification lit up one of the screens from the lab portion of the prison.

"The symbiot that we assumed was dead has broken out of containment. Please keep your eye out for a red liquid-like substance. It's old but we are unsure what it can do"

In her cell, Phillis talked to her new friend. It slithered into her cell from the vents earlier and through the seams of the glass around her. Now it was resting in her hair, blending into it's natural color and whispering in her ear.

"Phillis Syde, huh? Kind of sounds like 'flipside'. I like it."

"Me too." Phillis giggled "I'm so happy to have a friend."

The symbiot had been scanning her mind and going through her memories.

It saw a father yelling at a mother while a scared child watched. The man yelled and accused the mother of infidelity, saying that Phillis looked nothing like him. The fights were the least of it though.

It saw the mother repeatedly throwing the young girl in the basement and having her starve as a punishment. It was clear that she resented the child for "ruining her marriage". The father would come home and the fighting would start again. As the child grew, so did her desire to hurt others.

At school, she was ostracized and bullied. All she wanted was a friend but instead she was rejected and tormented. She would sit from afar and watch the other students hanging out. Laughing. Talking. She desired that.

After so many years of abuse, she had it. After her punishment, mother let her upstairs and at the door was both her parents. Something in her snapped.

She turned around and pushed the two adults down the flight of stairs and to the basement floor. The sounds of bones breaking on the way down and the pained cries of her mother and father were music to her ears. She locked the basement door and for the first time in years....she smiled.

Several murders later, she was out looking for another friend. So far, they rejected her and she'd dispose of them. She saw a boy around her age leave the nearby convenience store. He had brunette hair and wore a pair of sunglasses, despite it being nighttime right now. She could hear him talking to himself, carrying a bag of goods. To her luck, he made a shortcut through her alleyway.

"E-Excuse me." Phillis said, her hands in the pockets of her hoodie.

The boy stopped for a moment and turned to her.

"Will you..." Phillis murmured "Will you be my friend?"

The boy stared at her, unsure what to say. He turned back around and continued to walk back home. Phillis sighed in disappointment. She pulled a box cutter from her hoodie and charged at the boy from behind.

To he shock, he managed to turn and dodge. The box cutter only lightly grazing his cheek and knocking his sunglasses off, revealing brilliant red eyes. Entranced by his handsome face and those red eyes, time seemed to stop for her.

"The shock is your problem, lady?" The boy said, snapping Phillis back to reality. She repeatedly tried to slash at him but he kept dodging. She didn't even know this boy's name but something about him made her feel something. He heart was pounding and she felt like she was on cloud nine. This wasn't like the thrill she usually gets from killing. She was in love.

"Okay, you asked for it." The boy's body seemed to burst into flames. Phillis covered her eyes and when the brightness faded, what stood before her was the ghost spider she had seen in the news so many times. Her smile grew and her breathing increased. She could barely stand. She thought she was in love earlier but now she was sure.

Ghost spider quickly webbed her to the wall. "I'll alert the police and have them pick you up." he said in a demonically distorted voice before leaving her.

Screams erupted through the halls of the facility as Phillis walked through. Blades formed from the symbiot slicing through guards and scientists like they were air and painting the walls in their blood. All while Phillis walked casually over the bodies and to the exit door.

She couldn't wait to see ghost spider again.

Another Astrapothere! With a "snorkel"!
Based off the skeletal by Zimices- well, the brown parts: I decided to be original and use Riggs' 1932 reconstruction of Astrapotherium to fill in the blanks (scaled to the same vertebrae length) and ended up with something almost exactly the same anyway- only marginally shorter (on account of very slight differences in pelvic alignment between the two reconstructions). So while I ended up getting the near-same result as if I just used Zimices' skeletals entirely, I reckon it was worth it just to learn this new fact!

Anyway,

I've wanted to do this one for a long time as I felt trying to figure out the exact structure of the mouth would be a colossal challenge that I've seen a lot of interesting different takes on- in this case, I simply took the assumption that the tusks were still internal teeth protruding from the mouth, which would have lips enclosing around it in a vaguely similar way to tapirs and rhinos (who have very vaguely similar skull shapes). The trunk (which absolutely HAD to exist given its lower mandible juts out easily a foot beyond its upper mandible, and the tusks would have prevented it from grazing or reaching anything on the ground otherwise) is based loosely off tapir trunks, which show a little bit of corrugation but nowhere near that of an elephant. The rest of the anatomy, borrowed straight from my Astrapotherium- is based heavily on tapirs and rhinos- but erring to features more like hippos (assuming some convergence in form for river life).
