Had a brainwave. What if the "Sea" that chose Moana for the quest for the Heart, was actually the sea god Tangaroa?
---"WAIT! Isn't Tangaroa her son too?

Here we go--- some epic origin!

On the night of the birth. Moana and her people were still voyaging through the sea. She and Maui tied the knot and were expecting their first child. Then a storm hit and was wrecking the boats-- throwing Moana into the sea. In the stress and confusion she felt herself give. She was giving birth in the sea. The ocean was in a death grip, one side trying to keep her head above the water, the other dragging her down. Maui raged against the stormy winds that kept pulling him away from his wife, he was just with in reach with his eagle talons when Moana was suddenly plunged deeper under water.... And out came her son. Coral severed the cord and left mother and child separated in the deadly waters. Moana lost consciousness in her attempt to reach her baby only for her husband to pluck her from the sea.

Under the cold watery depths was a newborn, cradled in the coils of Tangaroa the sea god. The same who saved Maui when he was a lost child. His cold caresses left tattoo like birthmarks on the child that seemed to shimmer like deep sea fish. The child opens his eyes only to have the god merge with him.
In a burst of light the child was lifted from the sea and planted in the hands of his mother. Moana awoke at first in shock at what happened, but soon relaxed seeing her son in her arms. The sea was still and all was quiet. Maui was enthralled by the unmistakable markings of Tangaroa. He knew his son was not only dubbed a demi god like him, but the reincarnation of the god of the sea. The new parents named him Tangaroa in honor of the god that saved their son.

As the child grew he grew to show signs of being able to manipulate the sea. Maui had high expectations for his son to live up to all three of their legacies. The young Tangaroa was eager to prove himself, but a part of him couldn't help but feel he was living through someone else and not as himself.
