"Icy cold and unforgiving winds characterize the High North of Waidheim. Life in these conditions is unforgiving, though possible for those fiercest and in strong company. But even then survival becomes impossible beyond the Immerwinter Line where lie the lands of Eternal Ice and Blizzard. Every now and then the desperate or foolhardy cross the line in promise of treasure or starborn power.

Those who return speak of wights and giant shadows with glowing eyes, stalking them in the blizzard – beings of unfathomable size, seemingly invulnerable to the cold. Few see their shapes in the storming snow. Even fewer may look at them closely and the fewest may even speak to them. Those who do anyhow, soon spread tales of the Icy Giants – “Hünen” in their language – living near and ontop the mountains in the lands of Immerwinter. Their existence is legend, their nature a mystery. Only one thing is certain, for henceforth many decades the tales of the Immerwinter Giants travel all of Waidheim’s lands."

"Commonly called Smallfolk or Smallings these little creatures, are one of the most fabled and infamous beings on Waidheim. While their existence is known to be true by most of Waidheims inhabitants, rarely anyone has ever seen one of their kind. Nonetheless their artistic ability and craftsmanship is legendary among humans. Many a hero in their tale receives their weaponry, gear or attire from a Smalling leading them to do legendary deeds or conquer the hearts of their desired love. But not all myths speak favorably of the Smallfolk. Many cautionary tales are told and retold from generation to generation of Smallings stealing valuables and children, playing often dangerous and sometimes deadly tricks, or cursing thoughtless travelers with bad luck.

Although the tales of their mastery in art and craftsmanship are generally true, the fairy and spooky tales of the Smallfolk intermingling with the fate of humans are usually devoid of truth or vastly exaggerated – a result of their seclusion. They dwell beneath the surface, deep within the vast cavern system that pervades the continent and are content tending to their own needs and dealings. On occasion, they climb up to the surface at night to trade or snatch a basket of fruit or bread from inattentive farmers or millers. Those exploits are of short duration, though, and they are quick to get back into the soothing darkness and enclosure of their cavern homes."
