Agree on how expensive this movie is vis-a-vis endgame, infinity wars etc, but we have been in a high inflationary period since those movies so a direct comparison of cost isn’t accurate.

There is a chance, but it depends on how fast its loses it screens
Flash had a budget of 220 million, Indy cost a lot more to produce.

And as I said with so many big movies coming out in such a short amount of time, indy will most likely lose a lot of screens fast, which will hurt its legs.

It is a shame but it wasn't tracking that well. It has an 80 year old star and is a 4th sequel to a 1981 movie. Indy isn't SW. The issue is the massive budget. This movie was very expensive. So the only hope is a good 2nd weekend due to word of mouth and strong overseas. But it isn't making a profit. But if the movie is well liked (and it seems to be for the most part) it will be good for Disney in the long term if they want to continue Indy.

If the budget is 330M and they spent another 100M on marketing and the movie reaches 400M worldwide, which right now seems like best case scenario then this is a 230M loss for Disney/Lucasfilm.

Rule of thumb is 2.5 times the production budget to break even.
Lets say the movie has a budget of 300 Million, it needs to make round about 750 Million to break even.

The loss will most likely be even bigger, and since I dont think the movie will even make it to anywhere near 400 Million, this could really be a big hit for Lucasfilm.

Watched it last night, in a very . . . different, format. My pals from out of town wanted to all watch it together, so we found the best HDTS copy out there and streamed it. Terrible way to watch it I know, but we had a great time.

    Review:

The short story, not as bad as I thought it would be, and of course it must look a lot better in theater or just with a good copy. However, I would still need to rank this one below all the original trilogy.

The de-aging looked pretty good imo, and with a poor cam-quality recording there is a bit of German Impressionism to all the shadows in the opening act, which felt like an appropriately extravagant kick off. It goes downhill from there, unfortunately. Phoebe does not have chemistry with Harrison like his previous partners, and the kid sidekick they pick up is a waste of space. When they get to that big emotional climax near the end, her big speech feels unearned, I just didn’t feel any affection between them. Mads had good screen presence as usual and holds down the villain role just fine, although his plots and schemes were hard to track, but that is probably my fault for watching it with a bunch of comedians who were talking over most of it. It’s definitely too long a film though, and I wish they’d started time traveling sooner.

The brilliant stunt-work which made the original films timeless is mostly gone, replaced with Fast & Furious-style cgi-enhanced chaos. This might be a good looking film but I wouldn’t know because the quality of the recording was not great.

So, altogether, wasn’t impressed with this one but that’s probably my own fault for not seeing it in theaters. Had a good time though, and I’ll watch it again soon to pick up on all the details I missed.

I think the movie so pretty good. But lucasfilm’s recent reputation dampened enthusiasm for a new Indiana Jones (since the fandom would be worried it would be like the new Star Wars) and it would have to be exceedingly excellent to get past that roadblock (unfortunately it was still hampered somewhat by the bad habits of nostalgic screenwriters and the unsubtle scripting common nowadays)

I remember seeing how low the tracking was and weeks ago and the fact that it might go under that is insane.

As to the box office, I predicted there would be problems after seeing the post-Cannes synopsis, and now it looks like we could have a bonafide bomb on our hands. I know some people will probably feel triggered when I say this, but it must be said, this was another failure by Kathleen Kennedy: a production that dragged far too long and cost too much money, resulting in a mediocre film that doesn’t turn a profit, let alone improve the franchise’s value.

Blaming the poor performance on Crystal Skull fallout is avoiding the bigger issue, LFL has a track record now for chaotic, unsuccessful film production, and unfortunately I don’t see evidence of that changing with their dubiously conceived upcoming Star Wars films (the Filoni one has a chance though). The sooner she leaves the better, she had her time in the sun, time to step aside.

Indiana Jones’ success was born out of the golden age of Star Wars. It’s unsurprising that people are wary of a new Indy movie just months after a poorly received Mandalorian season following years of bad movies

KK is a good producer on individual films but she isn't the best person to run a company like Lucasfilm.

It’s creative decisions and aesthetic choices that bother me the most, and I think Kathleen has the least to do with that. Abrams, Favreau, Joby Harold, all contributed more to what I didn’t like

It was rather two brilliant minds working together on something they loved as a kid.
You had the masterminds of Jaws and Star Wars either directing, writing and producing a movie without any studio interferences (thanks to later Disney CEO Michael Eisner.)

I think not everyone is going to like DoD. There is definitely a different vibe that will play differently for different audiences.

I went in to this film with low expectations based on the reviews I'd read and after the somewhat disappointing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The 1pm show on opening day at the theater in my home town was sold out so I had to drive to a nearby town to watch the 2:30pm show there. So, I have a little hope that maybe it won't be quite the box office bomb that we've been warned about.

I really liked this film. It had everything I expect in an Indiana Jones movie. It's not the best Indy film, but not the worst either. After one viewing, I'd place it in the middle: below Raiders and Last Crusade, and above Temple and Kingdom. I enjoyed it so much, I'll probably see it one more time in movie theaters; something I haven't done since SW: Rogue One.

My only complaint is that the movie is too long. This film had enough action sequences for two Indy films and all could have been trimmed and possibly one or more cut entirely
possibly the opening train heist, or the scuba diving sequence, or the parade/subway horse chase, or the Tangier car chase. Pick any of them. Sallah didn't really add anything to the movie either, so he could have been cut from the movie without losing anything vitally important.

With the 2-and-half-hour runtime, plus the nearly 30 minutes of previews that accompanied the film, I was sitting in the theater for 3 full hours and in need of an intermission.
By the time they time-traveled to the Seige of Syracuse, I thought: oh no, not another battle sequence; I really need to use the bathroom!

For me, this film met my expectations and was a really fun way to spend an afternoon on a long holiday weekend.

I do not get the obsession with box office vs cost. Unless you have Disney stock or work for them what does it matter? Disney threw a lot of money at this film to give it the best chance to be good. Was it foolish? Perhaps. I am happy with the result. Disney did not charge more to see this than other films, and this is probably a record opening for a film with an 80 year old lead. It was the last Indy film and most I have talked to have enjoyed it.

Well done you, does that make you feel good?

I can honestly say that I haven't once gone into any of the Disney era films or TV shows thinking that these films have been over seen by Kathleen Kennedy, shes got to impress me or else....... I literally couldn't care less about her or who's in charge, others do because they themselves are for some reason triggered by her being there. I'm watching and judging the films and shows, I'm there to be entertained, not pretending to be a some kind of armchair expert on who and who shouldn't be running these companies. For me there have been more hits than misses in Star Wars, I've enjoyed everything to one degree or another other than TLJ. Equally the new Indy is not a mediocre movie to me, its a very good movie. I think some people are jumping on the bandwagon based on some of the poor critic reviews, peoples pre-judged agendas against Disney and that they just love things to fail for KK.

Even if you don’t care much about the Hollywood economy and box office performance, the basic dynamic to be understood is that a film needs to be profitable if it’s going to be franchised. The only reason this might be the “last” Indy movie is that they stopped making money, audiences are no longer willing to pay for an Indy movie at the price LFL needs to make them. If there was market demand for more Indy movies then they’d keep on making them, it has nothing to do “respect for the story” or even the art, it’s just business and that’s how franchise filmmaking works.

I don’t “love things to fail” for Kathy, I’d much prefer that she succeeded, but she has not made good movies for the most part while head of LFL (my subjective opinion) and she has also overseen some major commercial failures (not my opinion, it’s an objective fact). Of the three major franchises LFL has relaunched since Disney purchase - Star Wars, Willow, Indiana Jones - two appear to have failed. She’s had a long tenure and accomplished a lot, but I’d like to see what someone else could accomplish now.

Why isnt this a failure by James Mangold or Bob Igner, who directed and greenlighted the movie? Your misogyny is showing.

It’s not misogynistic at all to say that, and I don’t appreciate name calling . . .

It’s certainly Mangold’s fault for making a mediocre movie, and it’s certainly Iger’s fault for failing to make the changes at LFL that are needed. This doesn’t change the fact that Kennedy was the one overseeing this project. I understand many people like her work and support her, that’s a fine opinion to have. However, if you cannot express that support without name calling the people you disagree with and accusing them of misogyny then you are only undermining yourself . . .
