Crab is meat when it's meat from the crab (ie: claws etc)
When it's chunks of pink/orange seafood extender which is sometimes passed off as crab meat, it's often pressed fish leftovers, soy and food colouring.

i've done some thinking about all this, you know, in my spare time.
and i've come to the conclusion that crab is neither meat or vegetable.
rather, crab is a crustation. now, whether or not i'm spelling that is irrelevvantt.
crustations are like giant bugs of the sea. is a bug an animal? no.
therefore, when you eat crab, lobster, or "craw-daddies" you're really just eating giant bugs.
which are pretty darn close to vegetables.

    Fixed.

Arthropods are classified in the animal kingdom. Generally speaking, if it's multicellular and can move by its own volition it's an animal (sponges don't really move but they're still considered animals). If you eat bugs you're still eating meat, and if you eat fish you're still eating meat, regardless of what religious tradition may say.

no, see there's bugs, animals, birds, fishes, and slimes.
    also plants, minerals, and fungus.
and i suppose viruses would be a thing all their own too.

Ditto. And chicken. The only thing worse is when they assume I only eat vegetables.

Henceforth, seafood shall be known as... vegetables with flippers.

Crab is seafood, it comes from the water. Meat generally comes from animals that live on land, so yeah, it's okay to eat crabs on Fridays.

Seafood on Fridays during Lent is permitted by the catechism:

The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.

    From here.

Are you saying birds aren't animals? What about people? I have a cousin who doesn't think humans are mammals. He's ridiculous, though.

Also, crab meat=omgomgomg. I've had king crab legs the last two christmases at my uncle's in alaska. O m g.

    I LOVE CRABS! LOVE THEM

    But I hate bugs.

Therefore, I am sickened by your revelations that crabs are simply giant bugs [face_plain]

And the point of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent is to fast; to simplify one's diet to honor the sacrifices of Christ. So if you're Catholic and living it up with buttered lobsters and clam chowder bread bowls on Good Friday, then shame shame ;) :p

Crabs = bottom-feeding insects of the ocean. The last bit of evolutionary evidence I read about described a worm-like predecessor species for land-based and ocean insects.

Adding to the ick-factor: They eat everything that we excrete. Anything that goes into the sewer ultimately winds up in the ocean, in some form or another, and they chow down.

Therefore, crabs, lobsters, etc. =/= Food.

Crabs are busy creatures, and if they're caught anywhere in the vicinity of the East River, some might even call their flesh 'recycled human'.
