Heh, I think a prophecy is only paper with words on it. I don't believe in destiny in real life and see no reason to believe it in fiction.

G-canon has confirmed that as far as Star Wars goes, destiny exists, but that one must choose to follow their destiny.

Which is an odd notion in a way, because if you can choose not to follow your destiny, then it isn't really destiny. And if you have to eventually follow it, then you don't really have a choice!

I like to think that there are certain outcomes which are destined, but there's choice in the way in which a person can reach those destinations. Trying to understand it beyond that causes my brain to hurt!

Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker IS the Chosen One, as Lucas has said multiple times.

I think it's either what you described or that there is something which is supposed to happen(ie: "Will of the Force") but, one must choose to do what's right.

Very true, and unlike some things this is one area where I'm pretty sure Lucas has never been vague or contradicted himself.

Qui-Gonn first believed Anakin to be the Chosen One... the Council later came to believe it to be true. They later on started thinking maybe they had misinterpreted the Prophecy, and then when Anakin turned they thought for sure they had or that they were at least wrong about Anakin being the Chosen One. Obi-Wan says as much to Anakin directly on Mustafar, implying that he thought Anakin never actually was the Chosen One, or that he was at some point but stopped being it when he turned to the Dark Side.

But destiny and/or the Will of the Force took a long, strange path to achieving Balance (which of course means "harmony", not "equal numbers"). The irony is that the surviving Jedi did not think Anakin was the Chosen One, nor that he could be redeemed... and it was only his son who believed that there was still good in him and would neither kill him or join the Dark Side. Luke's love (and impending death) was what made Anakin/Vader think back on everything else he had lost and finally turn on Palpatine, knowing he himself would die in the process. The "Return of the Jedi" was the return of the Jedi within Anakin. This act was what enabled Anakin to fulfill his destiny... bringing the Prophecy to fruition by killing the Sith and bringing Balance to the Force... and thereby proving that he had actually been the Chosen One all along.
