My friend says that Endor is the name of a moon. I thought Endor was the planet. The fight was the MOON of Endor. Am I right? Don't they say "the moon of Endor" in the film? Again my friend says the Endor is the name of the Moon, the planet is un-named in the movie.

Endor is a gas giant around which the forest moon orbits; AFAIK, the moon doesn't have a real name.

I think in the film they say "the forest moon of Endor". It is confusing, because you wouldn't think that a forest could grow on a moon, but I'm pretty sure it's a moon.

Endor is the name of the moon and the planet, just like Yavin is the name of the moon and the planet.

For Yavin, the planet is Yavin IV.

For Endor, "the forest moon of Endor" could either mean that the planet or the moon is called Endor. Vader does say something about how a small contingent of rebels has landed on Endor, so at least the moon is named that. The planet could also be Endor, but I don't think the movie gives any indication one way or another.

"For Yavin, the planet is Yavin IV."

The planet is Yavin. Yavin 4 is the moon ;)

They're both called Endor. Sometimes Forest Moon of Endor, just to make it clear it's the moon, sometimes Sanctuary Moon for reasons I don't know, mostly just Endor because there's nothing else there of interest.

At the risk of threadjacking, when the Emperor refers to the Sanctuary Moon, he says "up there" and seems to indicate the window, as though we're supposed to see the moon in the upper-right portion of the window. Was the moon supposed to be there and they just couldn't make the opticals work out? Something to be added to the DVD?

The planet is Yavin. Yavin 4 is the moon

Er, yeah, that. I knew that. My mistake.

sometimes Sanctuary Moon for reasons I don't know

Out of universe, it's because originally it was going to be a wildlife sanctuary orbiting Had Abaddon (Coruscant), and they just kept the name.

the "up there" thing could be an Earthman's fault, because our moons are all "up", not down under behind giant space ships :p

right, I forgot about Had Abaddon. (Anybody else think this name is stupid?)

    The gas giant is Endor.
The moon is commonly known as Endor because it is habitable.

Endor, where the Rebels fought, was the moon.

I think that the Emperor refered to it as "Sancuary Moon" because that is where the shield generator that protected his life was at.

I didn't want to do this, but I've located the entry for Endor (Sanctuary Moon) from Bill Slavicsek's A Guide to the Star Wars Universe, third edition:
Located in the remote Endor system in the Moddell sector, the silvery gas giant planet Endor was orbited by nine moons. The Endor star system was selected as the construction site of the second Death Star battle station. It became famous as the system in which the Alliance finally won the Galactic Civil War by destroying the Death Star, killing the Emperor, and scattering the remnants of the Imperial fleet.
The largest moon was itself the size of a small planet and was known as the forest moon, the Sanctuary Moon, and simply Endor. The system was difficult to reach, as the uncharted territory and the massive gravitational shadow of the gas giant required several complicated hyperspace jumps to navigate. The moon had a temperate climate, with forests, savannas, and mountains. It is home to many forms of life, including boarwolves, Wisties, Teeks, Yootaks, Gorax, Marauders, and Ewoks.

I'm sorry to have had to ruin the fun for everyone, but it appears that Endor is both the name of the planet and the moon.

I thought they were on the fourth planet of the Yavin system?

Yes, it appears that Endor is both the name of the moon and planet. I looked this up in the starwars.com databank:
"Secluded in a remote corner of the Outer Rim Territories, the gas giant Endor and its verdant moon of the same name would easily have been overlooked by a busy galaxy were it not for the decisive battle that occurred there. "
Makes it confusing for people, but what are ya gonna do?

Yep. Even Vader backs this up when he tells the Emperor that a small rebel force has penetrated the shield and landed on Endor.

Actually, Vader is the only person who specifically refers to the Sanctuary Moon as Endor. No one else does. I think it's because of this one line that they are both called such.

The Yavin System is the planet and all of its satellites, and the Rebels set up base on the fourth moon. The Death Star had to clear Yavin to get a shot at Yavin IV.

'The moon of Endor' lines in and of themselves could still be directly referring to the moon as Endor. It's no different than saying 'The city of LA' for example.

The Rebels land on the forest moon.

In the Ewok TV films, and television series, you can see the planet Endor in the skies above the forest moon.

There's also an extra planet in the opening shots of ESB, presumably where Palpatine told the Imperial fleet to hide.

Is the Extra Large planet, by any chance, Endor (the planet the Sancurary Moon/Forest Moon orbits)?

This may be a little off-topic, but it Death Star II was the size of a moon, why was it so small compared to the Forest Moon?
