    Bao Dor builds the Jedi Exile a new lightsaber in Sith Lords, so it would seem that someone who had hung around Jedi long enough would be able to construct one.

    I think this article sums up the reality;

    Lightfoil

    Lightfoils were weaker than authentic lightsabers due to the poor quality focusing crystals used in their manufacture and the relatively low level of craftsmanship compared to Jedi artisans. However, the knockoff lightfoils apparently did not require any connection to the Force to create, and were fully usable by non-Force sensitives.[1]

    Sinre, if I may use that link to add to the point....

    In that second sentence of that, "However, the knockoff lightfoils apparently did not require any connection to the Force to create, and were fully usable by non-Force sensitives.[1]"

    The crystal, is what makes the all the difference to an actual light saber, to a non-force user saber. Force user's light sabers are connected to the Force, while the others are not.

    If what Bao Dor came up with was in fact a lightfoil, then that would mean the Exile was so powerful she defeated the Sith Lords with an inferior Jedi weapon.

    Because as with any other story that is entirely fiction.....
    i.e... It's "true" until someone comes along and adds to the story that changes or retcons it. :)

    I might also point out the difference in terms, "lightfoils" as opposed to "lightsabers". If one were to be technical about it, these "lightfoils" are not "lightsabers", so I guess the "Only Force-users can create lightsabers" stance still holds true. ;)

    Again, not entirely sure the need to point this out, since the fact is the material that exists answers the original question. And that's what you operate on. I mean, you don't go around jumping out of planes without parachutes just because future data could show that the theory of gravity is different-- because even though that could conceivably happen, you operate on the data that you have.

    Um, okay, we weren't talking about lightfoils though. Sinre posted a link to the lightfoil article on Wookieepedia, that hardly means suddenly ignoring the direct evidence discussed already, which shows that non-Force-users can in fact create lightsabers, not just just lightfoils.

    In fact it's not really an issue, since even regardless of the supplemental evidence, Wizards of the Coast explicitly states that a non-Force-user created a working lightsaber in the Star Wars Universe. And like I said, if you don't want to accept that in your personal view of Star Wars, cool, but arguing against it as the authoritative answer-- particularly when the original question noted wanting sources for it-- isn't going to hold much water.

    That said...here's more funk. :D

    Wasn't necessarily trying to argue. Just discussing. This IS all fictional, after all. [face_peace]

    Yes, but unlike Star Wars, gravity is a fact. Important difference, there. :)

    From what I understood, lightsabers were extremely simple weapons in comparison with other weapons of that age. Basically anyone could build one. But, Jedi during the process of putting the pieces together, used the force to bond the parts at a molecular level. Due to the perfection of bonding that people without the force couldn't achieve, these lightsabers were extremely unlikely to suffer any performance issues. Force insensitives could build them but they could be prone to operation issues maybe along the lines of power inconsistency and the destabilization of the crystals and various fixtures. (try Tenel Ka's first lightsaber.) Off the top of my head, I don't recall any non-force users creating them, but that doesn't mean they can't.

    Earlier someone brought up Bao-dur and the fact that he wasn't a jedi. However, he was force sensitive and later became a jedi. So even though he wasn't "trained" his force talents may have leaned toward mechanical uses which would allow him to have created a lightsaber that was perfectly fine. This is obviously an assumption however.
