Palpatine is DEFINETLEY NOT SCARED. How could the most powerful Sith in the Galaxy be scared. He was just putting an act on as he has been doing since episode 1, and with the fight with Mace Windu. Darth Sidious isnt scared because the guy can for see everything that is going to happen in his life( Hmmmmmm i will take a dump at 3:30PM today JK) the guy is a pshyco. Laughing at Yoda during a duel qualifies you as a bad-ass. Palpatine was just putting on an act, theres no way the most powerful force user in the galaxy can be scared of that situation.

the only thing the sith fear is losing power. he allowed the darkside to lift on the ship and that put his power at risk but i believe he was willing to lift it in order to allow ani and ob1 to fight, survive and then land the ship.
i dont believe that was his original plan, but when ani rescued ob1 he had to lift the darkness or they might have all died. without ob1 he may have been able to get ani to tap into the darkside to get control of the ship but he could not risk that with ob1 awake and aware.
for his own survival he lifted the darkness if only for a moment. the one thing that the sith had learned since the sith wars was patience. it served him well on the ship.

I think he's scared but I'm in the "Palps is a coward when he's not in control" camp.

Darth_Fruit_fly that is a hilarious pic!

I think part of it was staying in character as Palpatine, but I also think he was afraid. Not of dying, but of being forced to reveal his power before Anakin is ready to know. I think he was in an uncontrolled situation, and was worried that he might be put into a situation where he simply had to use the force to save his own neck. Even if it wasn't a Sith power, if he had to outwardly use the force, his secret would be gone. He wasn't ready to reveal himself, so I think he was worried the situation would force his hand.

I imagine Palpatine had forseen the events that were transpiring, hence his lack of fear shown during the crash-landing.

of COURSE Palpatine is scared. Who the hell wouldn't be scared? Are you kidding me? Okay, if I give him some credit and he knew he was going to survive the landing no matter what, that doesn't mean he wasn't scared. It's like going on a roller coaster. Anyone here been to Ceder Point? Tell me you weren't scared going up the hill on Millenium Force or before Top Thrill Dragster took off. I just about started hyperventilating before I went on TTD, even though I knew it was going to last less than 30 seconds and I would survive. I don't care how much of a bada** you think you are.

Cedar Point is the single best amusement park in the world for roller coaster enthusiasts....been there at least 10 times.

Very good question, I was wondering that myself. He is a powerfull guy but some people overestimate him like he has everything under control which I don't think, there are always things that could happen and are out of control, I don't think he was controlling the ship or something, i think he took part of the risks that become an Emperor means. Like in the fight with Yoda, he saved his neck just because of the handrail on the plataform, probably somebody will say "well, he foresees the handrail..." if that powerfull he is ....why leave.....and why he didn't know about Vader's feelings in ROTJ towards Luke. I think Palp is powerfull but he isn't God.

It looked like he was kinda nervous in the beginning of the Dooku vs. Anakin, Obi-One fight..I never read the book either so i don't know what it says about his thoughts..

Come on guys, he faked EVERYTHING! Jon Lovitz was in the back of the ship saying, "ACTING!!"
Pal had to fake it, but i'm sure he was a little concerned.

What about when Anakin and Obi Wan got their sabers back from Grievous moments before......what was up with the expressions on Palpatines face as his hands were cuffed behind his back. That Craked me up. I loved that fight scene, especially with no music!

That scene definitely was a winner. Ian was great in the movie.

I don't think he really gets scared. The only time he looks scared is when he's up against Jedi, but against Mace, he's clearly faking (At least at the end). Against Yoda he looks a bit scared when he flies down into the pod bellow. He's got his hands out there, ready to give Yoda the Force Lightning at a moment's notice. Then, when they're having their face off, he seems to look scared when Yoda creates that big blue/green ball of goo that blasts them both back.

Great question...but I don't have an answer. I guess I could see it going either way. Maybe it was a ploy - maybe it was genuine. It's hard to imagine, though, the most powerful dark lord in the valley freaking out over something that a little astromech droid (R2) probably wouldn't even emit a beep over.

The same question could probably be posed about Sids reaction to fighting Mace once Windu had knocked his saber from his hand and cornered him. Was Sidious really *THAT* afraid, or was he simply preying on Anakin's sensibilities? Sure he had ample reason to be afraid - Mace was poised to give him the big whackeroo. But would a man that powerful fear anything - even death - so much as to start squirming like a terrified school girl? If so, it kind of belies the character I thought of him as in ROTJ...so haughty and ostensibly in control that even if he were afraid he would be too proud and arrogant to show it.

    Like I said, good question.

Fear is a major part of the dark side.
I have no problem saying Palps was afraid at any given moment. It doesn't matter who you are, a ship is going down, you're gonna be afraid, I thought he handled it pretty well. He was very quiet and didn't freak out verbally.

    Wouldn't you be? lol
He's powerful, not all powerful and immortal.
If the ship crashed and exploded into il bits his power
is not going to save him from that.

I don?t know why he was scared. Anakin was ?still flying half a ship?, after all. I still laugh every time Obi says that.

    Why can't he be scared?

He's screaming his butt off when Vader lifts him in RotJ, he acts like a 5 year old when Mace beats him down and he does the same when the Invisible Hand breaks apart.

Count me in the "Palps is a freakshow when things look baaad" crew.

I think he might be genuinely uneasy but he would act it up even if he wasn't.

Fear is a part of the Dark Side - and I agree that Sidious fears that which he cannot control (which is the motive, incidentally, for most people greedy for power). However, I also believe that Sidious can foresee an awful lot, and sees beforehand that he will survive this encounter, at the least (although he might not have counted on it being so close a shave). I think all in all, he knows he'll come through.

There are some strange ol' faces he's pulling though...

He looked like he was going to the bathroom actually. Maybe he crapped in R2's head, and that's why he gave him that wierd look:

'I'll just blame it on the droid'
    -or-
'The next tech's going to have a surprise...'
