I say it is. Totally derivative. Totally immoral. Not to mention Keanu "whoa" Reeves. But it looked real cool, so everyone?s happy. No way is this pumped-up, pretentious, NRA commercial worthy of being compared to Star Wars, Lord of the Rings or even Terminator.
    What say you, devil's advocate?

And Star Wars, starring the critically acclaimed Mark Hamill, isn't derivative?

I hate how Matrix fans claim that bullet time is a device that "explores the ontological nature of the film." It's a damn camera rotation trick! It's just preposterous to me that someone could read so much into a stupid FX.

Why do so many people assume that the effects were the number one reason so many people loved this movie? I actually couldn't care less about the action sequences in Matrix, although I really enjoyed them nonetheless. The story was the great part, IMO; as cool and original as it gets. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best sci-fi films to be released in a long time.

Not to mention one of the most quotable. :)

I can't remember any lines from it.

    Oh yes, I can.

    "Whoa!"

I can't remember any lines from it.

Not even "There is no spoon"?

That's gotta be one of the most quoted lines since, well, SW came out. :)

"Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability."

I love how he says that. Quite different from his portrayal as Elrond.

I also think it's good sci fi, btw, but I tend to like a lot of movies. I'm easy.

Definately one of the top sci-fi films out there. If it didn't make you think, you must not have been paying enough attention.

It offers a simple plot in hindsight, but I remember thinking about it for days after I'd first seen it, trying to figure out all the intricacies. It took a second viewing to get it all straight.

    Great movie.

Another really good line is "You think that's air you're breathing now?" It's one of the few lines I've ever heard in a movie that truly served to give me some insight. If that makes sense. :)

    "Totally immoral."

Could you explain that. What do you mean, immoral?

    Amazing.

I thought it was a great movie. I can think of many more overrated movies. Pear Harbor? Remember the media hype for that before it came out? TPM? Armageddon?

And why is it immoral? What's it derivative of that most sci-fi movies aren't?

If you were seeing for the first time recently, it may not be as good, since action or sci fi movie that has come out since has copied some part of it. It was and is a very influential film. There's no denying that.

I like that movie. It's also one of the only movies that Keanu looks hot in. Immoral? That doesn't make sense...

Matrix is a good movie. But I do agree that people look too far into it than there really is.

A movie that I do believed is over hyped and reviered is Fight Club. I thought the movie was okay at first until kids at my highschool took it way too far. They'd act and try to think like Tyler D. It pissed me off and i trouble watching the film for i am reminded of all the morons who took every word from that film as a golden nugget.

    Oh well.

I had an experience with Matrix fanboys as well. They gave me the standard, "You're trapped in the Matrix and conforming to the system, and you don't even know it" garbage talk. Of course, they were all wearing the same clothes marketed by major retailers, wearing the same expensive Ray-ban sunglasses, listening to the same damn music.

    Ahem.

I saw only half of Matrix. I couldn't stand it so I just popped out the tape.

I liked the Matrix, but sadly I'm not really interested in the sequels. I mean look at who they are casting! Jada Pinkett Smith?!?! Give me a break. We all must admit that the Matrix was revolutionary, however, that is why I don't like it. Look at all the movies now that are 'copying' the Matrix's style. Whether it be a spoof (Scary Movie, Kung-Pow, ect, or an actual action scene, they all are taking advantage of things used in the Matrix. The all have these slow-mo/real-time scenes, and even lame-ass Charlie's Angels had gravity defying Kung-fu. I could name 10 movies off the top of my hand that blatantly copied either directly or indirectly from the Matrix. What sucks is that this in turn makes the Matrix effects and camera positioning and whatever seem tiring and watered down.

bullet time was done year back. Matrix broke no new ground there.

See Korn's music video to "Freak on a Leash" and you'll see the bullet time - done much before Matrix.

    Mace Windy, where art thou?

SW beats in in the quotes though.

SW: May the Force be with you.

    TM: There is no spoon.

Actually no, bullet time was actually created in pre-production for the Matrix. The reason you saw it in GAP ads and music videos before the Matrix was realeased, is because it takes a little more time to make a feature length movie than a 4 minute video. ;)

So even before the movie came out, people were copying it's style.

First of all, I disagree completely with EaglIFilms that 2001 is the most overrated film in history, but I agree that The Matrix isn't either.

It is however given more credit than it deserves. It did not invent it's style of filmmaking, nor did it perfect it.

I'm just sick of people saying that John Woo ripped off The Matrix with M:I2 when The Matrix is chock-full of Woo-isms. Oh well.

Citizen Cane. A good (great?) film even by todays standards, but not the greatest film. At least not anymore.
