I know what you mean about putting you there. The 3D games were quite a visceral experience.

3D changed everything. It’s was to video games what adding sound or color was to movies.

3D games popularity saw other game styles fall out of fashion for a while. Very few side scrolling games on the N64. The Lucasarts style point and click adventure never really came back as a mainstream game style. Never extremely popular but games that were like a choose your own adventure with video clips or animated sequences didn’t survive 3D.

I bought a PS One just to play Alien Trilogy. Just a great game. Basically Doom in the Alien universe. I got that and Ridge Racer and Twisted Metal with my PS One.

What I'm getting from this thread is how many people were just bad at Doom. Nothing to get mad at, @Ramza, just skill issues.

I'm really good at FPS in single-player. I'm much worse than I am good at FPS in multiplayer.

There is a reason no fps games are on my list and that reason is that I’m really, really, bad at them.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was the first game in that series that really hooked me. Couldn’t get into any of the ones before that, 2 included.

And I’m sure I’ve played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 at some point in my life, but not enough to put it on my current tally, which now stands at 7/15.

    85. Star Fox 64 (1997, Nintendo, N64)

Voter comments: Still the best flying game, one of the best period. -Autumnlight91

This game vastly improved on its predecessor and made flying an Arwing fun. The choose your path, as well as the different personalities and voice acting was great. In the end, it's a world I wanted to save and it had a lot of replay ability. Also, the rumble pack was so great as well as the different vehicles. -TiniTinyTony

    84. Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995, LucasArts, PC/PS1)

    5 points (3 votes)

Voter comments: The original of the Kyle Katarn and still the reigning champ. There was a lot to offer in the later games, but the simpler nature of this game and the novelty of the Star Wars universe at the time was aces. -dp4m

Trivia: the first objective-based FPS was a Star Wars game! Legend says that id software themselves shared part of their source code with LucasArts for their very first "Doom-clone" (we called them that.) Very fun game! -JoinTheSchwarz

Our first Star War on the list!

    83. Mass Effect (2007, BioWare, Xbox 360/PC)

Voter comments: Just pips Asylum based on the larger and more elaborate story. It's a stunningly well crafted game. -Fatburt

Arkham City is less focused than Asylum, less atmospheric, but it delivers tremendous gameplay and a satisfying robust experience. It's a great gaming experience. -Havac

Overall I think I preferred Asylum but City is still great.

    81. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (2009, Naughty Dog, PS3)

Voter comments: After playing the Uncharted trilogy from 2007-2011, I'd have to say the most fun I had was with part 2. Five years later, the 4th installment and The Lost Legacy were also great as they built on the established story and lore. Also each game improved the game play mechanics with the most notable improvement definitely between 1 and 2, hence why it's on my list. Also that train from the beginning and then revisiting it later to tie things together was very well done. -TiniTinyTony

The most varied locations and setpieces of the series, with a memorable mcguffin hunt, this sequel is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor and still stands out as a great thrill-ride. -darkspine10

Super fun and a huge upgrade over the first game.

Uncharted 2, 3, 4, and Lost Legacy all belong in my actual top 20 without restrictions. These are some of the only games I've ever replayed, too.

Never played Uncharted but my daughter loves it.

    Batman, 'nough said.

Star Fox and Dark Forces are both great games

    Mass Effect was OK.

My strongest memory of Star Fox 64, besides having to bail out my idiot allies, is stumbling upon the "true" final boss and ending.

The most remarkable thing about the Mass Effect trilogy is that they never managed to make the combat fun or remotely interesting to me. I always did my best to avoid fights so I wouldn't have to deal with the worst part of the games (other than the MAKO stuff from the first one). That said, I wish more developers made RPGs like this. Starfield is coming out soon, but I fully expect Bethesda to double down on the changes they made to their formula in Fallout 4 (e.g., 4 dialog options that all mean "yes"). I know these single-player experiences aren't as easy to monetize, so it's usually better to go with IP lootbox shooters that crash and burn at launch.

Yeah but every game sells in basically the first two weeks at which point the damage was done so, effectively, no you didn’t.

See this is the thing I don't get. 99.9% of that game's life it's been a perfectly good game.

There are a lot of games and you only get one launch window. Life isn’t fair (as the results of this list so far indicate), and death is the only certainty.

I mean I should also note I played Andromeda during the launch window and never had a single bug and played the game 100 hours and enjoyed it so... Shrug

Yeah I unironically enjoyed Andromeda, even the story! But it's 4th out of 4th for the ME series.

Star Fox 64 - Either this one or Ocarina of Time holds the record for the most times I've played an N64 game.

Mass Effect - As I said in my comments for ME2, the first entry has pretty solid writing, but the problem is that the gameplay rarely manages to get better than servicable.

Uncharted 2 - A major improvement over the first one, but I think 4 is better due to the sole fact that the enemy's aren't bullet sponges.

The first and third Crash Bandicoot games are very good. I beat the 1st and 3rd games, but can never get past the first set of levels on 2.

Dark Forces I really enjoyed and played all the way through.

Batman: Arkham City I started but never got into. It’s still installed on my PC and I keep meaning to go back to it.
