People actually think that JJ is going to rehash ROTJ after all the criticism levelled at TFA for being too much like ANH? JJ isn't a fool.

A sincere question: Does watching reaction videos where manchildren on the internet become hysterical over the J.J./IX news for the LOLs make me a bad person?

Correct. Remember, I big part of why TFA leaned on OT nostalgia was to win back a generation of middle aged fans who did not like the prequels. This was necessary to ensure Disney's huge investment was on solid footing and would pay dividends.

Now that that is out of the way, more originality can organically flow from the small seeds originality of what TFA had. Johnson will prove that can happen, and JJ will follow up Johnson's lead and tie up this trilogy well.

I think an optimistic take on this situation is that JJ will now be following VIII, which means he will have to be extra conscientious of making sure his episode movies the story forward in the same way and isn't a step down. Outside of Luke-Vader, ROTJ didn't have a very interesting story and I'd really like for that to be avoided.

You are right JJ isn't a fool. TFA made nearly $950 million alone in NA while being critically and moviegoer acclaimed. So if anything JJ might be more likely to keep with what works knowing that is what work before. As it came out after Lord/Miller were fired, Lucasfilm knows the formula of what works and doesn't want to deviate too much from it.

I said all along JJ was the 3-wood up the middle and will continue to do so. He is a great craftsman of film, but his storytelling is nothing great though.

I'm also thinking about the mental wellbeing of the people that already gave up on the ST. I mean, coming every day to complain about things you don't like will have a negative impact in your mental health. Focus on the things you love, not the things you hate.... the world would be a better place if everyone did that.

If I were as dissapointed in the ST so far as many are, I would have just moved on a looong time ago (in a galaxy far far away...). Whining will not change things

The cast, especially Hamill, need to get in training now for all that running they will be doing in Episode IX

Yep. An example that springs to mind is Gandalf, in Tolkien's books. He's out of the scene when he's most needed by Bilbo and the Dwarves in The Hobbit. Also in The Fellowship of the Ring, he doesn't show up when expected and is mysteriously abset for several chapters that put Frodo and company through their paces. Later, on, when most of the characters have grown significantly in their own right, Tolkien is able to use him in a much more present way.

I think the same will be true with Luke. Bringing him in at the start of the story, before the new characters have had chance to develop, he would overshadow them. Leaving him out of TFA until the end was a master stroke in my opinion. We now have a cast of main characters that can share the stage with him.

Why does JJ have to make my life miserable? Seriously I was this close to having Star Wars back in Summer and he takes it all away! I hate you, JJ Abrams! So much!

The difference being, regardless of how much I didn't like TFA, I do like Rian Johnson and I have hope that he'll make a good movie. After VIII is out, good or bad, then I'll check out. I promise. :p

The film is going to make significant money no matter what. What matters for the longevity of the franchise is that, after the initial nostalgia boost of TFA, that originality can be expected by the audience.

The firing of Lord and Miller, etc, from all reports wasn't because they were doing something overly original, but because they were doing something that was original and bad. From all reports of TLJ originality isn't something LF is adverse to - they are adverse to poor storytelling.

I am absolutely thrilled at this news the more I think about it. I am a big fan of TFA (despite my personal issues with some of the things it did) and find it the most easily rewatchable Star Wars film of them all. Abrams introduced us to a wonderful new cast of interesting characters driven by superb casting and strong performances. TFA looks gorgeous and is a well directed and restrained piece of filmmaking (Poe rampage aside). Furthermore, Abrams has the kind of mentality where he really does accept criticism (eg, Leia and Chewbacca) and wants to do better with every project.

And on a completely superficial note. Abrams seems the only director able to get genuinely good performances from actors sitting in cockpits doing their flying thing. And that's my Star Wars.

Honestly I hate the idea of Star Wars going back to May. December has a more "special" feel to it, imo.

Plus if you want Star Wars in Summer, go live in Australia. After all, December is summertime over there. ;)

(In all seriousness though, I vividly remember seeing Return of the King in an IMAX-type theater of some sort while I was having a Christmas vacation in Australia. It was an AMAZING experience and definitely recommend trying that out.)

I'd say that's more on Kennedy and a certain fired director. Had things gone smoothly, we would still have our summer movie debut.
