Jar Jar and the Eopie fart: good, bad or ugly?

So in the thread in the Saga section there were a number of posters who thought the scene where the Eopie farts in Jar Jar's face was the single worst element in the Saga; unlike the usual trend here at TF.N, this did not trigger a whole, large, nuanced debate.

So, does everyone here really agree on something? Was that scene just gratuitous, unnecessary and a mistake by George Lucas in an otherwise terrific filma and saga, or, is there more going on? Does this scene actually bare greater scrutiny, or do we all just wish it never happened?

No. I think that scene and the one where he steps in ooze, is a perfect metaphor for what happens to the future of the Jar-Jar character in general. The movie wouldnt be the same without them.

 

Jar Jar smelling the fart is the single greatest moment in the history of cinema. Debate over.

 

Yeah, but I was SOOOO disappointed. They did the fart scene so much better in the Novelezation. Youc an hardly tell in the movie that farts are the method by which the metichloreans communicate.

 

Bah. More of this nonsense about farts containing midichlorians. You realize that if things worked that way every Jedi would sniff Yoda's ass before combat.

 

Yep. But I wanted much, much more, than just Pee-Yousa. I wanted details, details, details. What exactly was the nature of the odor Jar-Jar smelled ? Was it a wet gas ? More CGI was definately needed in that scene, ILM let us down.

 

Well we got to learn a valuable lesson from all of this, kids.
Aliens fart just like us....... Wow.

 

Guys I think the original poster is looking for quasi-serious discussion. As much as that is possible, let's try that.

 

I think the fart joke was there so it would be funny to kids, but unfortunately it ended up turning out juvanile.

I personally don't mind it, but I can see how others would dislike it. Star Wars movies are kind of a serious sort, and this ended up being abrupt in a cheesy way.

 

The fart scene epitomizes Jar Jar's lowly place on the totem pole in that time and place in the saga.

Even the Eopie thinks poorly of him.

 

Yep, and its pretty hard to get lower than an Eopie.

 

I hate that scene. It was totally unnecessary. Even if we say "Yeah, it shows how low Jar Jar is on the Star Wars scale," most people watching the movie aren't going to make that connection.

 

At least movies aren't yet shown in Smell-o-Vision.

I love TPM and if you could delete those 4 seconds the film would be perfect in my opinion. I have even got used to Jar Jar's childish reaction when he steps on the dirt earlier. But the fart joke was a mistake and I am still hoping it will be deleted before the films arrive on blu-ray (I know it won't happen but I can hope).

 

Well, since "juvenile" means any being or organism that has not yet reached maturity then yes - a joke intended for children has to be "juvenile" (sic).

Now that's a helluva quotable... usable in so many different contexts.

As I stated in another thread, this was the beginning of Jar-Jar being overdone for me. I laughed the first time I saw it, I admit it. I'm easily amused. I'm 32 years old and still giggle when I fart. In my opinion, the Eopie fart scene is where Jar-Jar should have gained a little wisdom, but he continues to be monochromatic for the rest of the film.

 

I've never understood the scrutiny of this scene. Hell the OT had the same humor. The Sarlacc belch, The frog belch in front of Jabba's Palace, Jabba belching after eating a frog, and Chewie w/the Tarzan yell.

TPM is still my favorite of the PT and I never really had a problem w/JJ.

Note that all of those are from ROTJ, the worst of all Star Wars films. I didn't like the burp jokes or the Tarzan yell. So the Eopie fart is taking to the next level something that I always felt was out of place in a Star Wars film.

 

Well ROTJ had those things - not the whole OT per se. And all of those things annoyed me almost as much as the eopie farting in JarJar's face (the Tarzan yell for different reasons though).

Laughing because someone farted is one thing. I think most people do it and I think most people really can't help it - it's a funny sound, a funny thing. But laughing at someone who just got his face farted into? Just think about how disgusting that is. And demeaning. I mean hell they might as well have had the thing piss on JarJar's face. Oh how funny.

 

I just wonder which smells worse: eopie or swampy fish/salamander boiling on the sun...

 

Worse: Leaving your squid bait in the trunk for a week in the summer.

Isn't that being a little purient? If Padme had farted, it's have been out of line, but it was one CGI creature farting at another. No CGI creature was harmed doing the photoshopping...............

Besides, all creatures pass wind. Tatooine is a slobby place.

 

GL likes fart jokes etc. It's part of his sense of humour. As long as he's involved, there will always be a bit of that kind of juvenile stuff going on. I still prefer it to the music scene in Jabba's Palace.
