Interesting that Depeche Mode would make this list, as a lot of people tend to overlook them these days. I'm definitely seeing a lot of varying tastes coming into the list. It may be a lot more difficult to pick the top 5 than I previously thought...but I'll go ahead and give it a whirl:

    Top 5 albums >could< be...

    Dark Side of the Moon
    Joshua Tree
    Nevermind
    Abbey Road
    Led Zeppelin IV

I'm a huge U2 fan and admittedly there are several moments on ATYCLB that are ridiculously cheesy; however, there are some rather profound lyrics that make up for songs like "Elevation," not to mention a sound that hearkened back to the U2 of old--something the entire world needed after Pop.

Not at all. I don't think that, ultimately, he's on the same level as the holy trinity of 80s pop music (Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna), but I don't think the comparisons that get made are completely absurd, and I think he's probably the most talented mainstream pop artist to come along since their heyday.

Not that unique in the case of Justin Timberlake. The Flaming Lips love Justin Timberlake. Pitchfork loves Justin Timberlake. Just about everyone I know loves Justin Timberlake - especially the people who are most passionate and knowledgeable and downright snobby about music. I'm really not going out on a limb here. There are a lot of people I'm really passionate about that critics are meh on, and vice versa, but everyone loves Justin. It just goes without saying. Where have you guys been?

I mean, have you ever seen what happens on a dancefloor when the DJ slips "SexyBack" into a good set? People go nuts.

If that ends up being the list, please kill me, kthxbye.

    ________________________

All of the last batch belong on the list, except the U2 album, which sucks in that special way that only U2 can suck.

I don't love Justin Timberlake, or even like him... or even like that whole genre of music, but SexyBack is definitely a good song to dance to.

Far, far from it. They're like rock for 14 year olds to listen to. Little more than an introduction to decent rock music.

I expected that would be the popular opinion. When it first came out I heard that a lot. Origin of Symetry is, imo, their best album, certainly their weirdest, but I can't say I really love it, despite some terrific tracks. I like Muse, but I don't love them, and I feel I'm probably becoming more out-of-synch with where they are going.

I love London Calling so much.

Not in my top 10, but easily top 20.

I stole it from my brother two years ago, along with Sandinista!, Discipline by King Crimson, and my very first Phish album, A Picture of Nectar.

    It's a gorgeous album.

Much agreed about AYCLB. A rather boring album, with just a couple exceptions.

I have next to no knowledge about music but Sexyback is definitely one of the greatest pop songs and greatest songs to dance to from this generation. Since it came out, I don't think I've gone out once without hearing it at least a couple times, and what diz says is right, it has the ability to get everyone out on the floor (except the creepy old men who like to stand in the corners and watch). However, although Justin is incredibly talented alone, I think that Justin + Timbaland is really the unstoppable musical force here.

What about people who don't like dancing and find it pointless? Does it get them on the dancefloor?

Not really. You can say that about their first few albums but I don't see how you can say that about their whole career.
After Tommy left the band The Ramones went in a totally different direction.
Road To Ruin was the first step in getting there.
After a couple of mishaps they realeased Too Tough to Die and changed from being a punk band just playing the same few chords to a gritty, hardcore, and imaginative band that with the help of Dee Dee wrote some of their best material...
Their live albums do sound alike but I think being punk is an acceptable reason.:p

You have a point at clubs, but good pubs/bars won't have a dancefloor. Most uncivilised.

Well, shoot. I can relate to a music snob most of the time, as I oftentimes fall under such a "prestigious" category. But you kind of just showed up out of nowhere with the notion that we'd all be dying to hear your commentary on every musical opinion coming out of our mouths. Your entire attitude is getting beyond annoying, to be honest. Opinions are appreciated, but you give yours in a manner that aims to belittle any individual with a belief dissimilar to your own.

Also, what's wrong with any of those albums being in the top 5? With the exception of Nevermind, I consider all four to be classics, as do most of the individuals on this board. There are far, far worse alternatives for a top 5 list.

What he said.. this thread is for discussion... and so far, it's been great. I don't want it to turn into a pissing contest between self proclaimed music snobs. This is supposed to be fun... and everybody is entitled to their opinion.. that's why the list was compiled by voting.

Nice! I was gonna say, "finally some REAL music made the list!" but I don?t wanna offend anybody so....[face_whistling] :p

Here?s the good stuff: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Clash and U2...

I really don?t think most of these albums, especially Linkin Park's and My Chemical Romance, should have made the list but that?s just my opinion....[face_peace]

I actually have Linkin Park?s Meteora and some of their stuff is okay but after they released that new whiny, godawful album they lost all credibility.
They were a good rap/rock band but now they?re just emo...[face_plain]

Haven't seen The Beatles yet which means they'll probably be high up there.... [face_thinking]
I hope it's something besides Sgt. Pepper's, Revolver, or Abbey Road or my head's going to explode!:p

And I agree with harps and SWR, that's enough! [face_mod]
    :p

I'd have never gotten into JT if I hadn't been given tickets to a show here last year. He's amazing live, and a very, very talented musician. Also, like Dani said, Timbaland is one of the best producers out there and has done wonders for Justin's career. Also, JT is not just some generic pop star, he's influenced heavily by Stevie Wonder, and that would be obvious to anyone that actually gave his solo albums a listen.

I dunno, I saw JT as a the new Michael Jackson. Given that he's already white, the chance of developing a rare skin condition brought about by too many trips to the plastic surgeon to bleach his skin is pretty low.

But I'm talking about Michael "Thriller" Jackson. The talented, amazing type performer guy.

Also sif Star Wars or ESB OST won't be #1.

I saw Justified era JT as heavily Michael Jackson influenced. Futuresex/Lovesounds seems to owe more of a nod to (pre-Jehova's Witness) Prince.

Yeah, I really know the former more than the latter, since I've discovered this obscure genre which has the delightfully irrelevant title of "post-metal" and got kinda lost in the wilderness of ISIS, Pelican, Jesu, Sunn0))) etc.
