The latest episode shows that Jod is definitely no Jedi. He completely misunderstands their principles and sayings. It's like I said before, he's just some guy with Force powers who grew up learning about the Jedi secondhand and shaped his identity based on a flawed understanding of them.

He understands "no attachments" as a kind of lone wolf ideology, completely divorced from empathy and compassion. Like a neoliberal version of individualism.

It's pretty clear his powers are real at this point. He had to use Force push to block Fern's attack, making it less likely he's using some cheap technology like magnets. While it's still possible he's using some kind of tech, I don't think this is the case or we'd see more characters using this advanced Jedi-like technology.

Anyway, the key point is that he misunderstands Jedi beliefs, and this misunderstanding could be the key to changing his worldview.

Maybe he doesn't misunderstand but is really bitter about them and had some bad experience so they are quite twisted in his interpretation?
Being a Jedi may be fire but... you get basically snatched from your family to not see them again and then you may end up betrayed by your new family, with even your friends killed by the one in your new family you thought was the best ever and was your role model and he kills all the younglings and ends up being a evil sith lord?
And you say WTF full BS... you took my family away for this $hit?
I end up betrayed and left for dead and alone and my life is wasted, was it worth it?
How are these ideals right if they produced this?
Why the heck should I trust again?
    To be betrayed again?
Why should I trust why should I think about others?
I ended up alone my whole life
My family gave me to the Jedi and forgot me
The Jedi and the clones betrayed me and killed my friends and left me for dead
I ended up with the pirates and they also betrayed me at the first sign of weakness
Why should it be different with this bunch of kids?
I don't want to remember how the light side felt good and how I loved teaching to younglings
It is a slippery slope, the first sign of weakness and you end up hurt and alone
That's how Jod life's went until here and that's the only thing he knows

I think his instinct is one of a master but he is fighting it
He does not want to give in to "weakness" because he was hurt enough
I also think he took control partially for the treasure , maybe, its what he tells himself,...but he took control because already before landing he tried to keep them onboard to keep them safe but he could not do that because they had control of Smee and then in the Resort room he realized they are only kids and he cannot keep them safe as long as Smee is obeying to them.
It is lilke trying to babysit a kid with a big pitbull as guard dog... you try to avoid the kid falling to death from the stairs but the dog won't allow you to keep the kid safe, your only chance is to take control of the dog ...
I think Jod will eventually turn around
    I hope
Because I like Jod now and I want a new character which is partially a bokken Jedi and saw light and shadow and can teach a new generation of Jedi outside of the strict former Jedi code who had its flaws and did not work for anyone

    I want a new Kanan

He was a Jedi..Padawan or Knight...but it has been 20+ years and he has been going down the path of pirate/bounty hunter/scoundrel in all that time. Like Ahsoka...he is no Jedi...but for different reasons. I do think he wants the treasure...but he also wants to protect the kids. And with the kids not knowing the stakes and willing to do what he says (by the way there were acting and questioning everything in the hotel room) he had to take matters into his own hands. As I said in the ep 5 thread...I think next episode the kids will be in trouble and it will be Jod and SM-33 who have to rescue them. Hopefully then we will get the Cliff's Notes of his story from Jedi to Order 66 and the downward spiral of his life over the last couple decades.

Jod is such a great character. I love how layered he is. You get the sense that he does, on some level care about the kids, but also that he would not hesitate to hurt them, or even kill them, if they stand in the way of getting what he wants. It's very refreshing to have a lovable rogue character like him be genuinely dangerous.

Also, the way he has retained some Jedi wisdom from his upbringing, but modified it to suit his new life of selfishness and treasure-seeking. Well done, screenwriters (and Jude Law). =D=

    well that's a bit of a contradiction,

"he does on some level care about the kids, but would not hesitate to hurt them or kill them" = I don't give two hoots about these kids.
What you are describing is not layered, unless you consider psychopathic to be layered :p

I think there was a reason why he challenged Fern for captaincy....I don't think greed was the reason.

I agree he is an excellent character though, just don't believe he'd heartlessly kill kids for credits. They didn't choose the life of piracy

Has Jude Law already become a classic Star Wars character? I think he has.

Kanan didn't become the Kanan we know in Rebels, until after he hooked up with Hera. Story told in A New Dawn. The kids will most likely end up being Jod's Hera, a reason to change.

So Jod has used the Force a couple of times in a useful way but not overbearingly to make life a lot easier for him. Makes you wonder why he is holding back? He's not even impressing the kids with his powers, except for Wim of course.

But then again we never saw the Hattan clan again....

I will weigh in on that as soon as I can see what happened with the Hutton clan Ehehe;)
I still think he either did a Jedi mind trick on them or well they are somewhere under the bushes and he also used the force for that… we also never saw how he escaped the other pirate on the spaceport that wanted to turn him in and managed to steal a ship while carrying Smee around like a dead weight …[face_thinking]

Others may have seen something else, but there was such glee, joy, in Jod's face when he called and ignited the lightsaber. If not for the comment about his home planet being ashy, I wouldn't doubt he was raised at the temple. If we draw a parallel with Kanan, he clearly did not remember his home or parents, so where was Jod raised? The idea he was raised on Mustafar, which is just sad and frightening, has been raised. I can't imagine that was much a nurturing atmosphere.

To date this show is tightly written. There is the feeling every line is important, somehow, to reveal the mystery or develop the character. This would explain his understanding of Jedi sayings. Maybe padawan to inquisitor school to pirate?

This brings me to a non related question. Was the Grand Inquisitor in Rebel's redeemed by the Force? Thus, becoming an after-death temple guard?

Not according to the comics. The Grand Inquisitor kind of ended up stuck in this weird form of existence. I can’t remember exactly but he kind of haunted some place from memory.

I'm still unconvinced there's anything altruistic about Jod making the challenge. And it occurred to me that it's like his pulling the key for the cell: He could've done it earlier, but wouldn't have gained from it. In Pirates of the Caribbean terms, it's "waiting for the opportune moment." In that same episode, he also took the dagger (from what is quite possibly Rennod's skeleton) and asked 33 about the ship. When the history is revealed in the fifth, Jod is freshly excited, interestingly the opposite of Wim at that point. And there's the story from 33: "With the treasure so close, the First Mate went mad with greed, and challenged the Captain."

It's not quite the same experience as visiting a Long John Silver's in a nutshell but the menu is comparable.

I agree… he would not kill these kids. He’s obviously got a shady past, but part of his redemption will involve some sort of sacrifice on his part that benefits the kids. When it comes down to escaping with treasure, for example, or saving the kids, he’ll save the kids. He’ll sigh and roll his eyes, but he’ll do it.
