That was good. I like that he's got his Skywalker's confused.

I don't want some cheap, crappy paperback. Hardback or nothing.

Just do what I do- wait 1-3 years for the American paperback and Kindle it in the meantime. We usually get the better covers too.

True, it has, unlike previous stories, had very few UK listings. The only one who was offering it was Amazon and now it says unavailable.

But, they did the same on Crash of Fate and ended up getting some copies of that. Granted, it was a case of spotting that they had it, cancel the old order and place a new one, but hopefully, it'll repeat for this one too.

    If not, there's always Ebay.

Can you guys in the UK not order the American versions from book depository? That's where i get most of the American hardbacks from and I'm in Australia, they always have plenty in stock there for me.

Not this time. Previously, they have offered the US version far in advance of release, as have Wordery. What then happens is nearer the time they stop taking US version orders and start listing the UK one. So, pre-buy at the right time and you're all set.

But this pattern didn't happen on Crash of Fate or Force Collector. The older ones, it did.

There might be different import / selling rules for Oz though.

Huh that's really annoying, I wonder why it's different in Aus. Especially strange since all the ones I've gotten from BD (including Spark of the resistance which just came last week) have shipped from the UK anyway.

    Another excerpt.
    https://www.polygon.com/2019/10/10/...er-prelude-book-force-collector-kevin-shinick

It’s hard to imagine a world without Star Wars, but in the early part of 1977, that was the situation. So when television ads for the upcoming movie started to appear, people’s minds were blown. There were these images like nothing I had ever seen before, but not quite enough to tell the whole story, so I let my mind fill in the gaps. From what I could tell, Star Wars was going to be about a bad guy in black who kidnapped a princess and kept her in his castle in the desert. And there were these sand people who protected the castle. At some point, a young boy rescues the princess, because when I saw him heroically swing across the chasm with her, I assumed he was exiting the castle. In fact, in my mind there might’ve even been a moat outside.

Of course when the movie came out, I learned I was right about certain things and very wrong about others. But I wanted to go back and somehow capture the excitement of piecing together Star Wars, and that’s what got me thinking about Force Collector.

Of course we, as an audience, have been lucky enough to have a front row seat to this amazing intergalactic battle, but I wondered, ‘What about the people who lived in that galaxy a long time ago? Would they know as much?’ Chances are they’d know as much about that war as the average person in our world knows about World War II. Sure, we know who the principle players were and who won, but there are so many tales we don’t know about until movies or books like Dunkirk or Schindler’s List come out. That’s when you learn about the smaller stories or the unknown battalions who deserve credit for major wins that no one remembers.

And I thought, in many ways that’s what the Jedi have become. Especially if you live in the Outer Rim where history books are antiquated or just not available. And certainly given the propaganda the Emperor spun to soil the reputation the Jedi had. So my lead protagonist, Karr Nuq Sin, sets out to find the truth about the Jedi almost like he’s finding out about Rosebud in Citizen Kane. Researching, interviewing, experiencing — only he has an added interest because the larger story engulfs his own experience in ways he’s happy about and in ways he’s not.

What I like best about Force Collector is that it gives fans the Star Wars world they know in ways they’ve never seen before, while also offering newcomers a guided tour of some its greatest moments. And it’s all woven together by an original coming-of-age story that readers can relate to.

The passage you’re about to read is one of my favorite scenes in the book, because it encapsulates a lot. It sheds some light on Karr’s mysterious powers, it touches upon bit of Star Wars lore and also attempts to capture the awkwardness of two teens alone together for the first time.

Feels so familiar doesn't it? I mean, as a collector of Star Wars it's so meta to have collectors of Star Wars in Star Wars!

Our 2 main characters of the sequel trilogy both have their collections. Kylo has Vader's charred helmet(guessing some of those ashes are from Vader's pyre as well). Rey had his AT-AT house, her Rebel pilot helmet, her homemade Rebel pilot doll. Rey at least now has a collection of old Jedi tomes. Senator Casterfo had his Imperial collection. Now we get this guy with his Force/Jedi collection. And, of course, Dok Ondar and the Gatherers at Galaxy's Edge.

Pretty neat if you ask me.

There definitively seems to be a trend there. Spoilers for the book can already be found on Reddit. As for me, I'm waiting for more detailed information.

There has definitely been a trope of the NuCanon with collectors, archeologist and ancient mcguffin types.

Okay, well I just finished reading this (I'm in the UK so got the paperback version). I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say re:spoilers, so I'm just gonna put some generic thoughts down under a spoiler-tag. I can always chuck more thoughts down if it's alright though!

This is one of the best Star Wars books I've read in the new canon. I was definitely skeptical going into it, and I think I was wary going into it, but I devoured it in a day. The main characters are really interesting, and while there is no central villain in this book, it's more about Karr's journey understanding his connection with the Force and his place in it - which is actually EXTREMELY interesting in itself, and I think it poses an interesting line for a post-TROS universe...

One thing I loved about this book is just how interconnected it is. You've got things from the prequels, scenes from the Clone Wars TV show that are expanded, tie-ins to Rebels, the OT, the ST - it all just feels so connected, and I love it. It also grapples with how the galaxy see the Jedi, and just how much they actually know about what happened thirty+ years before. It's all great stuff.

I had a couple of minor gripes, such as managing to just land on a planet and find what they're looking for by luck (although I suppose the Force intervening could be argued).

I have a lot more to say, but it's hard without really spoiling it and I'm not sure if I can do that with it not being released in the US but am happy to say more if that's allowed!

You can write anything about an officially released novel, just keep it under a spoiler tags.

(I'm not a mod though, this is just based off the rule thread)

Arrived yesterday; wife forgot to tell me, I read it this morning over breakfast.

Its actually set pre-TFA, and the main character crosses paths with the pre-plot before he hits the end of things.

It was a naturally good fit, story-wise. The world’s we saw on our artefact hunt - seeing all these places was brilliant fun even if it was on a trip with a psychometric.

The running theme of the galaxies perception of the Jedi was a good one, because it really is something that isn’t massively addressed. Luke may have saved the galaxy but the Empire spread that the propaganda that they were traitors in an aggressive manner. So it needing to be argued against is a good point.

The twist at the end was really enjoyable, and the two main characters were well rounded. Considering how relatively irrelevant the plot is in terms of moving past TLJ, it didn’t matter at all. It introduced some good questions, resolved them all, and came to a good conclusion about the Jedi and Sith; maybe a leading conclusion, but we’ll see.

Very happy with this. Possibly the best of the Journey fiction so far. Recommended!

How cheaply crappy is the paperback? Or is it a decent quality volume?

wow, I didn't know Egmont was on the ball with Force Collector, added to wishlist which upon review I probably shouldnt have done. I currently have 19 canon books/comics in my wishlist coming in at a heft £200.02

As much as I love the books, this year, comics especially has been brutal with the number of releases. Perhaps unfairly so IMO. Of course no-one is forcing me to buy them, but still....

I simply wait for the TPBs and work through getting one a month, my other fandoms dependent. Novels come first.
