Hello everyone. Is there anyone playing in Malgus server? I am looking for a new guild and I was wondering whether you would have any recommendation.
I finished reading through the KOTOR comics for the first time recently. I really liked the dynamic between the characters. Zayne, Gryph, Jarael, Elbee etc. all played well off each other, and I'm going to miss them now that the series is over. Gryph alone is worth the price of admission. It's interesting comparing these with the Tales of the Jedi comics because they were doing opposite things. TotJ told the epic, galaxy-shaking story of the rise of Exar Kun, the fall and redemption of Ulic Qel-Droma, and the broad strokes of the Sith War. In that way, it felt like one of the movies rather than "extra material". However, the characterization left a lot to be desired, and while a lot of the characters were cool (i.e. had neat designs, did cool things), I didn't latch onto any of them as people. KOTOR by contrast keeps the big happenings of the Mandalorian Wars on the periphery. We hear, and sometimes see, the progress of the Mandalorian war machine, and what the Republic, Jedi, and Revanchists are (and aren't) doing about it. But that isn't the focus. The focus is on a group of characters of secondary importance in the grand scheme of things, but it does a great job of developing them and their struggles. Because of that, I think KOTOR works better as a story, but I did sometimes find myself wishing to see more of Revan, Malak, Mandalore the Ultimate etc., especially because I know we won't be getting more of those characters - at least in this continuity. The humour, characters, and overall concept reminded me a lot of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and it made me wonder if James Gunn has read these comics. Miller also does a really good job of establishing intrigue, and giving you answers a bit at a time. These comics were page turners. I have one significant gripe with these comics: the portrayal of the Jedi and Republic. There is a big focus on the rich and powerful within these organizations making everyone else's lives miserable, but there aren't enough counter examples. Outside of a few scenes with Vandar Tokare and Vrook Lamar, the majority of Jedi appearances is a secret society that murders Padawans and a breakaway sect that goes against the Council by warring against the Mandalorians (eventually resulting in Revan and Malak falling to the dark side). Miller seems to have have very little interest in the traditional heroic depiction of the Jedi, and the Republic fares similarly. By the end, when Zayne rejects his neutrality and goes with the Republic, it feels hollow because the Republic has been depicted as a corrupt plutocracy for so much of the series. It makes sense to do this when stories approach the PT because the Republic was becoming corrupt in that time period, but here it feels cynical. That is one thing the High Republic era in Disney canon gets right: they aren't afraid to show the Republic and the Jedi in an actual golden age. Overall, I really did like these comics though. It's just a lot easier to articulate what I don't like about a story than what I do unfortunately.
hey everyone... just got new update installed for SWTOR... now when i click play, it does not launch the game. never have had this issue before. anyone got some ideas?
I read Revan for the first time. I liked the first part quite a bit, but I thought the second half was bad. The first part felt like KOTOR 3. I liked a lot of the added lore, which seems to be Karpyshyn's specialty. Now for the juicy stuff (I'll put this in spoiler tags even though this books is over a decade old): Spoiler: Revan Yeah, I'm not a fan of Darth Revan being a mind-controlled zombie in service of Vitiate. It takes away his agency and turns one of the most iconic Sith Lords into a nothing character... which sucks because there was a lot of material there to give Revan an interesting fall e.g. him going against the Council, the massacre on Malachor V. But no. He's just being mind-controlled. What struck me even more is how dismal the ending is. Meetra (and T3!) die for seemingly nothing. Yes, I know they delayed the invasion of Vitiate's Empire, but... so what? They only succeeded in kicking the can down the road. It doesn't even seem like Bastila et al. received any additional information about the threat Revan went out to find, so they aren't able to prepare for it. Revan is separated from Bastila, and while she grows old alone, he is stuck in a paralyzed but apparently conscious state. It's just so depressing. I may feel differently given time (I don't need every ending to be sunshine and rainbows after all), but right now I'm not feeling it. I think I'd still rank Karpyshyn as my favourite EU author because the Darth Bane Trilogy is just that good... and also because most of my issues with this book are conceptual and not with the execution. I don't know how much creative say he had in the direction of this story, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was outlined by someone else to line up with the MMO.
