Why can't anyone in this topic admit that this is clearly a mistake?

That's what I keep trying to point out. There is no in-universe explanation for it, it was just a cool idea so George threw it in.

I don't think it is a mistake really. If you look at time index 0:51:28 on the DVD you can see that the capitol ship here does not simply lift off in a completely vertical motion.

    [image=http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/6755/landingstrip9ke.jpg]

It slowly proceeds forward and at the same time gains height. It needs to gain the height to clear the buildings surrounding it, hence a landing strip. It's not quite the same thing as what Anakin lands on but is still very similarI believe that they were also used for landing multiple cruisers in one area to cooridinate forces.

Your picture proves you wrong. Look at those bridges...they are barely the length of the ship taking off (vertically, mind you).

A landing strip, a strip of land for landing. The alnd multiple ships there (probably cruisers) but as there is one hell of a battle going on in orbit none are there right now.

I think of it almost like a carpark, and your question is (almost) like asking, "Why did Anakin's car need all of the car park to land?" when actually the car park was just empty.

So basically it is a car park (or the in universe equivilent) for big capital ships and it just happened to be eempty which is perfectly understandable given the circumstances.

How many Star Destroyers were in orbit during the battle of Coruscant? I'm thinking a hundred or more? Where do you keep them all when they land? hmmmmmm...oh yeah! A landing strip!
The landing strip is not a landing strip in the regular sense. It's just a big long open space area for big ships to "land" on. Anakin never said "runway strip." I don't see the problem.

Now, if you really want to see it as something bad ('cause your hating heart just won't let you accept any explanation) then see it as a contrivance at worst. The story needs somewhere for the ship to land on, not on buildings so our heroes survive. So what do you do? Landing strip!

Two good explanations, choose your favorite...or not. The third would be "Lucas sucks, is a moron, doesn't have any idea how to do a movie, I'm a better director, he's lost it, he's raping my childhood, etc." Make a choice and let it go..or not, too. Remain rotting with hate for the rest of your life.

I dont think its a mistake. We havent seen all the ships in the GFFA, from all the 20,000 plus systems at least.

I hardly think this is a mistake.

I very much doubt Lucas didn't give it some serious thought beforehand. This was a big addition to the geography of Coruscant. The irony of a flat piece of land, whatever its function, couldn't have been lost on him. And I'm sure he decided, as others have logically assumed in here, that owed to Coruscant being the capital of the galaxy, it would surely have structures and stratum to accomodate tremendous ships.

You're reasoning is therefore flawed. You have attempted to construct a logic trap for people to fall into. With all due respect, BothofUs, I have noticed a proclivity for negativity in many of your posts. But there are many here who, more constructively, in my opinion, choose to regard the saga positively and use their imagination to construct reasonable answers. Such, I believe, is the case here.

The red zone is for loading and unloading cargo ships. There is no parking in the white zone. :p

I still can't get over the fact that they probably killed hundreds of people in that control tower and Obi-Wan then says,

    "Another happy landing!" :)

Yeah! Not for the people in the control tower!

What if it was totally automated or run by droids?

Well, Obi-Wan has been known to resort to his ?from a certain point of view? statements. Perhaps the ?happy landing? was based on the fact that he likely helped send a few hundred folks up to heaven.

Odds are it was probably by droids. And if it wasn't, they would've been forced to leave once word reached that the Hand was coming in for a crash landing.

Considering the planet is under attack, I doubt people would continue working like nothing was heppening, odds are, if the tower was run by people, they would be underground in bunkers.
